19206067Paris: N.p. 1920. Two manuscripts 7" x 9.25" preliminary draft 23 pages entirely illustrated and written in pencil. The other manuscript 9" x 11.5" contains 17 leaves recto and verso; the text written in pencil but with beautifully detailed gouache illustrations 4 full page and the remainder inset in the text. Housed in a paper folder. The preliminary draft is toned and smudged in places while the color manuscript remains bright and clean.

Stunning illustrated manuscript of a Japanese legend from the "City of Pleasure" concerning the beautiful courtesan Otzoumi and the Buddhist priest Itzari. The text of this story appeared in a compilation La cité d'amour au Japon Courtisanes du Yoshuwara by Dr. Tresmain-Trémolières in 1905. The cover and the spine of the paper folder which houses the manuscript both have written manuscrit a Cottin. Perhaps this is a hint as to the author/artist or perhaps means in the style of say Eugène Cottin or another. The gouache pieces are bright colorful detailed and fantastical and to us seem to us to resemble the Art Deco style of George Barbier. Certainly a manuscript worthy of further study.

From the library of Jacques Loreau 1920-2010 operatic tenor and avid collector of 19th and 20th century literature and theater. . 1855002062Pagan Burma: n/a 1855. A rectangular footed wooden manuscript case sadaik from Burma constructed in three sections providing two separate compartments for manuscript storage. The exterior of the case is richly decorated overall with inscribed scenes outlined in red orange green and yellow lacquer over a black lacquer background. Unusually the box bears seven inscriptions in stylized Burmese script which provides much information on the dating of the box 1855 the donors' names Daw Mae Ngwe and U Sein of Hman Kyo Pagan City and the scenes depicted on the box. These are as follows: for the top panel the left side portrays King Ajatashatru consulting with his ministers regarding where he should seek repentance for his wicked deeds. To the left of center the King is kneeling before Venerable Kasyapa surrounded by attendant Bhikkhus apparently expressing remorse. A single robed figure to the far right Ven. Ananda sits in meditation seeking the Dharma. Around all four sides of the case there are processions of figures in courtly dress all culminating in the center of one long side where a single central figure the Brahmin Dona sits on an ornate platform facing a naga dragon. According to the inscription above him Dona is in the process of distributing the Buddha's relics. The interior surfaces of the three sections are covered in plain red lacquer; the base in black lacquer. The case would typically have been used to house and protect a Buddhist manuscript either a sutra on lontar palm or a Buddhist initiation manuscript kammavaca. There are minor chips and scratches commensurate with its age and use; overall the case is in very good sound condition. The case dimensions are 67 cm. x 21.3 cm. x 22 cm. high. n/a.
