One attractive woodcut of Harry waving a tattered flag. Undated a copy at the AAS with both poems and printed by L. Deming in Boston is suggested at 1832-1837. The Female Sailor had appeared a few years previous. The Female Sailor was a popular trope in England and then America where a woman falls for a sailor as here or loses her love to a press gang or some other calamity and then dresses up as a sailor to track him down. Summer romances the hazards of the communal dining table days of genteel ennui and other activities with the first names of the participants indicated as a partial aid to social historians a few of them are named in pencil on the title page are described in double columns of rollicking verse narrative and accompanying plates. Green cloth card covers blindstamped decorative borders on front and rear boards with gilt vignette of lady croquet player with title beneath in gilt. 56 pages including 7 pages of price lists for croquet games and equipment. The book is well illustrated with some full page engraved illustrations and smaller figures in the text portraying items of croquet equipment and diagrams etc. Engraved frontispiece showing participants at Eglinton Castle Croquet with the castle in the background. 4. 18905074Nepal C1890. An attractive hand painted original Thangka Mandala. Either Nepalese or Tibetan. This is an unusual copy as it includes a representation of the black buddha to the left edge. Painted onto cloth and in excellent condition. Thangka painting is a traditional form of Tibetan Buddhist art typically created on cotton or silk. These paintings often depict Buddhist deities scenes from the life of the Buddha mandalas or other religious icons. Thangkas are highly detailed vibrant and portable designed to be rolled up like scrolls for easy transport and display during religious ceremonies or private meditation. 88cm x 62cm. hardcover

This seems to be a French translation of "The Amicable Quixote; Or the Enthusiasm of Friendship" although we have no idea where the "Bruce" came from! The English original was published in four volumes by J. Walker of London 1788. This edition in three volumes has a leather spine with gilt decoration. There is some loss to the head of volume two and nicking to the bottom edge. Marbled boards with some rubbing to them. Half titles with printer details to the verso. Followed by title. Slight edgewear with small closed tears to the titles and half titles of volume I & II. Binding is slightly shaken but holding. Pages are mostly clean with a touch of foxing / marking to them.
