113795Continental Europe 13th-14th century. . Hebrew manuscript on vellum in old black ink; sheet size: 32 x 21.5 cm mount size: 45 x 35 cm; browning staining creases and marginal tears; mounted.
Fragment from the Writings' Book of Psalms with Masorah containing Psalms 112 to 114. Psalm 113 also known in the Christian Latin liturgy as 'Laudate pueri Dominum' beginning in the King James' version: 'Praise ye the Lord O ye servants of the Lord'. In Judaism it is the first of the six Psalms comprising the Hallel prayer which is recited on 'Rosh Chodesh' the first day of the Hebrew month and on Jewish holidays. In Roman Catholicism it is one of the Psalms included in the Vespers service the evening prayer. It has been set to music often notably by Claudio Monteverdi in his 'Vespro della Beata Vergine' in 1610. In Hebrew the psalm has several famous melodies typical to each community's place of settlement which were passed trough generations in Sephardi Mizrachi and Ashkenazi communities and dating back to the middle ages and possibly prior.

It seems that this leaf was used in what is known in Hebrew as 'Gnizat Krichot' the use of the leaves from old books' for binding newer books at a time when bookmaking materials were scarce. Many Jewish books that were confiscated by the Catholic Church during the Inquisition were also repurposed as binding material.
[Continental Europe], [13th-14th century]. hardcover

3731940
Boston: Pinkham Press 1917–1918. 22 x 14 inches printed on cardstock. Illustrated. Lightly soiled; near fine.

“Our Fathers are Fighting in France.†A rare and unrecorded first World War photo-illustrated broadside documenting a little-known display of Franco-American friendship.

Across America various patriotic societies often organized by women raised funds and sent baby clothes and necessities to France. These funds went to help babies orphaned by the War or to help French mothers with children whose fathers were fighting with the American solders. As one American soldier described it: “We will say for instance that this is Baby No. 4000. She wears wooden-soled shoes and half-length woolen stockings and a blue calico dress and her mother does the washing for the Sammies who are billeted out in the barn with Toto….†“Right in Touch with the Babies†in Life Magazine 1918.

Here at the French Baby Fund Festival Exhibition the Boston community lent a benevolent hand and declared “May Day†to be “Baby Day†as part of a three day festival at Liberty Cottage Boston Common. The raised funds were likely funneled to the Fraternité Franco-Américaine.

The broadside is printed with the colors of France and all of its text is printed in a pale lavender.
unknown
18855333Edinburgh: N.P. 1885. First edition. A lovely album sized 28cm x 37cm. Most of the albumen photographs are sized 21cm x 27cm. Sadly the album has no ownership details but the first photograph is of a British ship This is HMS Malabar a Euphrates-class troopship which appears in several of the photographs so we assume that our traveller was aboard this vessel. Next is a fabulous photograph of what seems to be a theatre troupe perhaps for a fancy dress event on the cruiser as the outfits seem to bear little connection to each other. Sadly there is nothing to identify the participants. Then follows a large photograph of Aden in the Yemen and one of the Suez Canal from Suez itself. The following three photographs are of Port Said at the other end of the canal. Then follow Sixteen photographs of Cairo and district including the pyramids mosques and including several photographs by Félix Bonfils and H Arnoux. Two of the photographs have a small area of loss where the photos have stuck together in the album but with fairly minor loss. Included in these are a lovely photographs of date sellers and a praying man both studio photographs by Zangaki Brothers Janos and Adelphoi and a group of camels about to set off. We return to the Suez canal for the next photograph where the Malabar is photographed by the Zangaki brothers. This image was lately used in the Larousse dictionary with two more photgraphs of the Malabar on the canal. Photographed by the Zangaki brothers. These 26 photographs make up the "Middle Eastern" portion of the album. The next photograph is of the harbour at Malta and there are a total of nine large photographs of Malta. As an interlude is a curious photograph of a cartoon / caricature of a boat being pulled and labelled "The Nile 1884-5." Next we find a lovely photograph of the Rock of Gibraltar from the Spanish coast and two further photographs of Gibraltar landmarks. The next stop on our journey is Norway where there are seven photographs of Christiania Oslo. There is a final Norwegian photograph which is a hand coloured photograph of young women in traditional Norwegian costume. Finally the traveller returns to the United Kingdom and arrives at the Forth Bridge and Edinburgh with two beautiful large sized photographs. Finally are seven smaller but still very respectable albumen photographs of Edinburgh landmarks. These each are 13cm x 21cm. So in total we offer an album of 50 pages containing a total of 56 albumen photographs 49 large format and seven slightly smaller. . N.P. unknown
