Old manuscript label to the side: "Last Judgement / White collection". The block remains in very good condition indeed with only a touch of minor old loss to the foot of the lower border. Accompanied by an impression taken from the block printed on high-quality modern paper. A splendid late seventeenth- / early eighteenth-century woodcut printing block depicting The Last Judgement with a resplendent Heavenly City at the head.</p><p>The present block originates from the workshop of the pioneering Newcastle printer John White 1689-1769 who inherited a large collection of blocks most likely including the present one from his father also John White the York-based printer. White's collection of blocks subsequently descended through a series of Newcastle printers: Thomas Saint Thomas Angus George Angus Emerson Charnley and William Dodd. The present wood-cut is reproduced in Charnley's 'Specimens of Early Wood Engraving: being impressions of woodcuts from the collection of Mr. Charnley' Newcastle: 1858 and Dodd's subsequent 1862 edition. A lovely folio work which is a piece of Catholic history. In the original Latin. The Roman Pontifical contains the rites of Bishops and is a Catholic liturgical book. Under Clement VIII 1536-1605 a standard version of this work was issued for the use of the entire Roman Rite for the first time. Therefore this is an early edition of this text. This work is in red and black across two columns per page. There are several psalms to which is printed the sheet music. In a lovely condition. Has been rebound without the endpapers. Rebound in a full calf binding. Externally generally smart. Damp staining to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Prior owner's contemporary inscription to the head of title page. Pamphlet bound in grey paper covered boards with blue cloth covered spine.Scarce.Collated complete.A Latin translation of: "A true state of the case of the Commonwealth of England Scotland and Ireland and the dominions thereto belonging. " In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. There is some wear to the extremities including a few marks to the boards. The binding is tight and firm. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with handling marks to the title page and final page. A seventeenth century pamphlet concerning Daniel Defoe's 'A New Test of the Church of England's Loyalty' and 'A Reply to the New Test of The Church of England's Loyalty'. This work also includes Sir Francis Walsingham's letter to Monsieur Critoy concerning Queen Elizabeth's proceedings against papists and Puritans. It has since been proven that this letter is a forgery and has since been attributed to Francis Bacon writing in collusion with Archbishop Whitgift. The letter was first found in 'Scrinia Sacra' before being published to this work. With the signatures A2 B-C4 as called for. ESTC No. R6019 The first and only edition of this work. Written anonymously. This pamphlet is a response to Daniel Defoe's 'A New Test of the Church of England's Loyalty' and the anonymously produced 'A Reply to the New Test of the Church of England's Loyalty'. It discusses the penal laws made during Elizabeth I's reign which are the Act of Supremacy the Act of Uniformity and the Supremacy of the Crown Act. This work was published the same year that James II passed his penal laws or the 'Declaration of Indulgence' or 'Declaration for Liberty of Conscience' were a pair of proclamations. It was the first step to establish freedom of religion in the British Isles with the King's intention being to promote Catholicism. The declaration was to grant toleration to many Christian denominations. This pamphlet was circulated at a difficult time for the country in terms of its monarch Parliament and Religion. There was an uprising in anti-Catholic sentiment and against James' rule. Political pamphlets like this added fuel to the fire. The year after this pamphlet was issued the Glorious Revolution took hold and James was dethroned. Collated complete. Disbound as is common. Externally smart with just some minor chips and creases to the extremities. Prior owner's contemporary inscription to the title page. Internally generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are age toned with the odd handling mark and spot. Prior owner's pencil inscriptions to the top corner of pages indicating page numbers from when this work was once bound. Relatively recent hardback binding with marbled boards and leather title to the spine with gilt titles. In very good condition with very slight rubbing only. Internally in beautiful condition. Clean and bright throughout. 24 pages long. 14cm x 8.5cm. The pamphlet emerged at a pivotal moment in the confrontation between the Dutch Republic and Louis XIV's France. The War of the Reunions 1683–1684 had just concluded with the Truce of Ratisbon Regensburg signed on 15 August 1684 which rewarded France with Strasbourg Luxembourg and other territorial gains from its so-called "Reunion" policy. It is catalogued in the Dutch Pamphlets Online collection by Brill which preserves thousands of such documents from the Dutch Golden Age and the subsequent period of conflict with France. Octavo 165x105mm in darkened calf-covered boards neatly repaired with remnants of original spine leather viii310pp2pp blank. Titlepage missing upper right corner but text not affected staining to lower edge throughout but not affecting text. Ink ownership dated 1750/1 at top of titlepage another "Catherine Sponer" on verso of final blank. Fore-edge staining/soiling mainly to beginning and end expecially in bottom left hand corner but not affecting readability. Corners rounded but with good margins throughout. Peter Walsh was born in County Kildare. He was guardian of the Franciscan friary at Kilkenny 1648-1650 and then served as chaplain to Castlehaven s army in Munster. All Catholic clergy captured by the Cromwellians were executed and Walsh in danger of death fled Ireland eventually to London where he lived obscurely until the Restoration. Walsh remained a devout adherent of the Catholic Church but kept friendly relations with the Anglicans. He wrote 1672-1684 a series of controversial letters against Pope Gregory VII's doctrine of papal supremacy a History of the Remonstrance 1674 and various other works critical of his fellow Catholics. This book - very rare in its first edition as here - is usually attributed to him. It argues for tolerance between religious factions calling for true liberty of conscience. It condemns persecution in relation to religion arguing that Catholics have as much right to be tolerated as Recusants. As long as other faiths hold doctrines that are consistant with peace and government they should be allowed to follow their conscience. Such writings put Walsh at odds with the Catholic church but before his death in 1688 may have influenced King James II`s 1687 declaration of indulgence referenced by Wing W627. Dibdin notes this Bible as 'the most magnificent' of the Oxford Bibles. A handsome edition with this set bound in a binding with George III's monogram to the boards. The first edition of the 'Vinegar Bible' which is known as such due to the erroneous 'The parable of the vinegar' instead of 'vineyard' above Luke XX the verso of G6 to the New Testament. This variant has the 1717 imprint to the Old Testament and the 1716 imprint to the New Testament. Printed by John Baskett who was the King's printer. Baskett held a reputation for purchasing competing Bible printing business and absorbing them into his own. He wished to produce a high quality Bible in a folio edition that would become a presentation piece used in churches and aristocrats. This Bible was therefore produced. A scarce edition of The Bible which holds important stature in the history of print and in the bibliography of The Bible. Particularly scarce in this contemporary Royal binding which is possibly a presentation binding produced for this work. This edition has the red-ruling throughout both volumes. The 'Vinegar Bible' is noted for its beautiful head and tail pieces throughout. Harry Carter in 'The History of the Oxford University Press' notes that 'only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type impression and paper' Carter p.171. This copy has been skillfully rebacked to both volumes with the original spines laid down and boards preserved. With a Sotheran stamp to the verso of front endpaper. With the vignette title page depicting the Clarendon Building to the Old Testament. To the New Testament there is a vignette title page depicting the Annunciation. Sumptuously illustrated throughout with head and tail pieces in addition to engraved ornamental letters. With the signatures: 1 a-b2 c1 2 A-4P6 4Q3; 1 A-X6 Y4 Collated without additional engraved title page. Blank 4Q4 to the Old Testament and Apocrypha is not present. Gathering is bound after c1 rather than preceding a-b2 as it is found in the ESTC signatures. Another nickname for this edition was 'A Baskett-ful of Errors' due to the numerous misprints Herbert 942; Darlow & Moule 735. A very smart copy of this work in an important contemporary binding. In uniform contemporary black morocco bindings with the monogram of George III to the front boards. 'GR' Monogram to the spines. Rebacked with the original spines laid down and boards preserved. Externally generally smart. Light marks to boards and minor fading to the gilt. Internally both volumes are firmly bound. Small loss to the dedication leaf from chipping with repairs to the dedication leaf at the gutter. Minor chips to first few leaves to the Old Testament at the extremities. Tiny worm holes to 1 of Old Testament. Occasional tape repairs to the margins of leaves to both volumes noticeably to the bottom margin of E1 to the outer margin of E5 and to 2L3 which affects the occasional word to the left hand column. R6 has slight creasing and some minor closed tears to the gutter not affecting text. Small loss to the bottom margin of 2B2. Small loss to the extremities of 4C2. 'New Testament' also has repairs to the bottom margin several leaves including the title page C5 & 6 N2 and T2. To H3 there is a repair to a closed tear at the bottom of the page not affecting the text. Tape repairs to the text of K4 to the New Testament obscuring the occasional word. Pages are unusually bright. The majority of leaves to this work are clean however 4F2 and 4F5 to the Old Testament are spotted. Very Good John Baskett unknown
