The only son of Charles Abbot 2nd Baron Colchester of Colchester and the Hon. Elizabeth Susan Law he was educated at Eton College before being admitted to Christ Church Oxford. He was President of the Union Society of Oxford in 1863 and graduated with an M.A. in 1864. In the latter year he became a Fellow of All Souls College. He was Examiner in Law and History at Oxford University from 1869 to 1871. He was called to the bar at Lincolns Inn in 1867.
