18885014Paris / Lille: Société de Saint-Augustin 1888. First edition. An unusual work telling the story of the Roman Catholic Missions to Africa. A large book. Soft covers bound in vellum with black printed titles and designs to the front and rear covers. The vellum is still and a little cracked with age and there is a small hole to the spine edge. It seems a very luxurious way to bind a book in the late nineteenth century! The book blok is seperate from the vellum binding - but it may always have been more of a folder / portfolio as there is no sign of it having been attached to the inside of the vellum. The binding of the book block is fragile and although it is just holding together it is a little loose. The first page is a chromo-lithographed title with gilt decoration in the style of a medieval work. The Jesuits monogram is to the centre of the design. There is a closed tear to the bottom edge. There are then 148 pages bordered in red floral design. Full of illustrations. These mark the history of Christian missions in Africa from the flight of the holy family to the late nineteenth century. Engravings steels in black and white and sepia throughout. Some in green colour. An attractive rather fragile work with light intermittent foxing. We can find only one other copy in its original binding. This was one of four works dealing with Africa Asia America and Oceania each complete in themselves. 38cm x 27cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 7635132. The Société de Saint-Augustin was in fact a publishing arm of Desclée de Brouwer & Cie. This was a publishing house active in the late 19th century known for producing Catholic literature and missionary works. . 38cm x 27cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 7635132. 19001627Original manuscript. c.1900. Quarto red cloth album with bevelled edges 25.5 x 19.5cm containing 28 fine black chalk drawings on thin tracing paper depicting various ancient Persian and other Middle Eastern rulers mounted at the corners to the leaves. Each sheet approximately 18 x 15cm. Seven images with red manuscript titles in Cyrillic beneath. Armorial crest in red ink and small old bookseller's printed description affixed to the front pastedown. Old pencil note to the front free endpaper stating "Tracings from the tombs". The album itself is significantly worn and lacking the spine the upper board held by the cords only and with the first five leaves loose and other leaves becoming so. The leaves with light foxing and marking and occasional nicks to the extremities. Possibly lacking one drawing at the beginning. The first drawing is detached and has creasing to the corners affecting the image at one corner several other drawings are detached at one or two corners but still remaining mounted to the leaves with minor loss to the blank corners and with a little wrinkling to the extremities otherwise the images are in good order. An intriguing album of finely-executed black chalk drawings depicting twenty-eight rulers from Persia the Middle East and Mediterranean with named individuals including: "Rut-n-nu"of Egypt; "Dikran II" Tigranes the Great 140-55 BC King of Armenia; Amastris c.340-39-284 BC Persian princess and ruler of Heraclea the first woman in the Mediterranean publicly identified as the political economic and administrative royal authority; Nicocles King of Paphos d. 306 BC; "Turan Khan"; Mithridates; and "Sheikh al Arab".

According to the early twentieth-century bookseller's note affixed to the front pastedown the drawings are "tomb tracings" of Persian and Egyptian portraits. The first image titled "Rut-n-nu" depicting a portrait from an Egyptian temple which was also reproduced by the French Egyptologist Jean-François Champollion in his "Monuments de l'Egypte de la Nubie" 1835-45 certainly appears to indicate this. However the remaining drawings all very much in the Persian manner and uniform in their style and execution and of which we can find no other examples/copies puts a question mark over this apparent origin.

Provenance: from the library of Dr. Hugh J. Schonfield 1901-1988; acquired from Hodgson & Co. London A Catalogue of Books from Various Sources 24th June 1965 lot 404. [Original manuscript]. hardcover
