This is a very good softcover copy in colorful pictorial wrappers designed by Paul Rand with just light wear. Completely clean inside and very clean outside, some toning to the front cover, top right corner a bit abraded, back cover also some toning, two very small tan stains, and a number of tiny marks along the edge near the spine. This is the stated first edition. 10" high X 7.5" wide, 35 pages. This book will be securely packed and shipped with tracking.

Lying in a hospital bed in 1915 recovering from combat wounds suffered in World War I Apollinaire assembled the fragments of a tragicomic mock-epic and occasionally obscene autobiography-a-clef: The Poet Assassinated. This novella recounts the life and death of Croniamantal whose birth is -saluted- by the Eiffel Tower's -beautiful erection - who rises through the Parisian literary world to proclaim himself - the greatest of living poets - and who is then torn to pieces by a mob. A statue built -out of nothing like poetry and glory - is constructed in his honor. Hand-numbered 248 of 250 copies and signed on the colophon by Jim Dine and the translator Ron Padget. The single pencil-numbered pochoir differs from the colophon and is 247/250.
