1st edition. Original Blue and White Boards. 13 leaves plates ; 22 cm. In English. This is a poem about the Battle of Antietam written by a Jewish Union surgeon who served in the battle, and throughout the civil war. Mayer wrote the poem for the dedication of a monument established for his 16th Connecticut regiment. Although Jews had not been allowed to serve in the military throughout most of European history, they had played a role in the defense of their communities in North America since the 1600s Dr. Nathan Mayer joined the army as an assistant surgeon in a Connecticut regiment of volunteers. He soon became a full surgeon and served at many of the most important battles of the war. At Antietam, he used a farmhouse as a field hospital where he had some success using chloroform, an early anesthetic. The battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single-day battle in America History. In the poem, Mayer writes, To all who in this holy strife/Went forward with their sweet young life/Prepared to give. And let it show/Set high in noondays golden glow/Upon this verdant field of blood/That life is not the highest good/but higher, holier, sweeter far/Are lifes ideals. Like a star Mayer was later captured with his regiment and held by confederate troops for seven months. These individuals blend - and generally surpass - educational, family, community and religious imperatives of 3 female populations: American, Jewish, and executive. The investigation could thus measure interwoven American, traditional, and professional factors influencing career and personal decisions, and propose workplace and societal accommodations for this and other groups. The multidimensional method befitting this complex sample first examined primary and secondary texts to comprehend the interconnection of Judaic views about women and their work, Jewish and American historical forces, and contemporary religious and secular ideologies. The investigation then indexed responses to a survey, randomly distributed among Fortune 1000 executive women, assessing respondents' educational, familial, and spiritual backgrounds and commitments. These results, with some follow-up interviews, yielded a profile of the Jewish executive women. Lastly, the sample was statistically compared to American, Jewish, and executive women on points concerning corporate and community diversity conflicts. - Abstract. Subjects: Jewish women - United States. Women executives - United States. Women - Employment - United States. Businesswomen - United States. Businesswomen. Jewish women. Women - Employment. 231, [1] pages. 9.2" x 6.3". Waton (1871-1959) was a Jewish philosopher keenly interested in the works of Marx and Spinoza. In the Foreword, dated 1939, he states "I convinced myself that human society is irresistibly and inevitably moving towards state capitalism and fascism. Further reflection also convinced me that this social transformation would inevitably bring upon the Jews great suffering. How could the Jews face this world situation? This question occupied my mind for the last twelve years. At last I reached the conclusion which I embodied in a program for the Jews. When the Jews declared war against Nazi Germany and fascism (in 1933), I saw that as a suicidal policy. Thus passed more than five years of ever-increasing suffering for the Jews. When the situation became so grave that the Jews themselves began to realize the gravity of the situation, the Spinoza Institute of America asked me to formulate my program." On page 199 he adds "We have to face the fact that the Leader of the German people has no doubt in his mind that the Jewish problem is the centre of all problems, not merely in Germany, but in the world. It is useless to dismiss this as an illusion, because if it is, it demands explanation. But it is no illusion." Brilliant gilt lettering upon front board. Light external wear. Binding tight. Faint patches of soiling to boards. Occasional light pencil marginalia and underlining until page 21. Moderate age-toning to contents. It is left to readers to ponder the impact Waton's program could have had upon twentieth-century history. Book
