Poetry of friendship addressed to the owner: "Eliza thou hast vex'd me quite; for oh! that pen and ink! How couldst thou ask me for to write Til not my meat and drink-May be that I am half posess'd! Ann Ullman Hirsch 1929 - 2017 had formal musical training and education at Juilliard and NYU; she was a passionate musician music educator and administrator. In a career spanning more than 60 years she was well known on Long Island for her extensive musical contributions including founding the Eastern Suffolk School of Music in Riverhead in 1977 and serving as its executive director for 10 years. Pianist and violinist she was a valued member of the L.I. Sound Symphony and was a private piano instructor to children and adults. Named East End Woman of Year in Education East End Magazine Suffolk County NY 1979 and honored by Peconic Bay Zonta at a Celebration of Women in 2013. from her obituary in 27 East and several online sources Collection includes: 1975 A 68-page typed manuscript with 2 annotated working draft copies of "A Basic Guide for the Teaching of Piano" by Ann U. Hirsch. These include tipped-on photographs of students' correct form along with the teaching exercises in the text & with extra image-sheets and 35mm photographic negatives laid-in. One of the drafts has extensive marginal notation. All are accomplished one-side either on quality typing bond paper of the time or copies. The original set is a group of loose sheets; working drafts are in 3-ring binders. Ms. Hirsch' introduction explains her purpose since according to her research - "There are also many fine books both long and short written by great pianists that suggest technical and artistic approaches for the advanced and professional performers but my purpose is hopefully to have written something for those who work primarily with beginners. I have tried to make it personal and informal while at the same time offer specific advice in the areas I consider most crucial. My hope is that if this book were to be published it could be made inexpensively in pocket book size and thus be available on counters in music stores as well as in colleges for all those who study piano and expect to teach it too" With 3 typed original letters from Ms. Hirsch to the music publishers Theodore Presser Co. Sterling Publishing Co. and Prentis Hall Publications all describing the content and asking in similar fashion to consider her book for publication. Included here are these three publishers' rejection-replies & another letter from Dover publishing which also rejected her project for various reasons. There is also a handwritten request from Ms. Hirsch soliciting the opinion of a professional editor-writer whom she thought may be able to help put her book into proper form for publication. A run of 26 piano recital programs given in 1987 - 2013 by the students of Ann U. Hirsch; given in various private homes on Long Island. Most approx. 7" x 8 ½" size; single folded sheets with four printed sides. 1980-1984 Approx. 30 one or two page programs for the ESSM concerts student recitals often given monthly and a few other miscellaneous programs sponsored by ESSM in the Riverhead NY area: Jazz concerts percussion events concerts by faculty & guests student presentations. With personnel players pieces performed. 1986 A file folder with approx. 30 typed pages of material some on ESSM letterhead. These papers recount the struggle apparently of several months duration of the music school's attempts to restructure the board of directors and executive functions find adequate and sustainable financing and address critical accounting insurance liability and staffing issues which threatened the institution's continued existence. Some of the letters reveal troubling circumstances and finally include the resignation of Ms. Hirsch as the school's executive director and her choice of ceasing any further activities associated with the school including teaching. Other letters document and list various complaints needed changes salary & staffing requirements involving Ms. Hirsch board members and others who were involved in the running of the school. Miscellaneous: A three-ring binder with thumb-guide sections with some dozens of pages; this was Ms. Hirsch' own personal teaching and performance log: Students; Billing; Music; Musicians & Schedule. These sections have handwritten entries lists of student names addresses phone numbers; billing schedule and names columned with payments & various billing tiers. The "Music" section gives student names pieces planning for programs teaching notes; "Musicians" section with names phone numbers musical instruments & often the location of a large group of varied musical talents. Harry Thompson gives a remarkable case report of a woman who had been admitted more than once to the Columbia Hospital for Women suffering from severe pain in the supra-pubic region with continuous urine dribbling. Having discovered a foreign object in the bladder Thompson removed it by an incision made in the viscous through the vagina with the patient under etherization. The foreign object turned out to be an iron handle of a crochet-needle around which had been wound and knotted hempen cord. The crochet-needle was encrusted with deposits of urine salts. The un-numbered plate gives an image of the crotchet-needle. Plates include illustrations of surgical procedures and instruments. Contributors include Samuel C. Busey on the diseases of children; D. Includes 4 portrait engravings under tissue of ladies identified as Nanette The Duke's Daughter Beatrice Katharina; as well as 1 engraving on the title page. Inscribed to Miss Virginia Holby on the front end page "as a reward of merit." Includes 17 other handwritten inscriptions from fellow students. Some foxing and toning on engraving pages. Very good condition. <br/><br/>Signature album kept by young woman Virgina Holby during the end of the 1857 school year. All of the inscriptions are dated to June 1857 as the academic year was coming to a close and students were dispersing for the summer. Virginia's classmates affectionately address her as "Jennie" throughout the album and while some write poetic verses such as "Forget me not Forget me never till yonder sun shall set forever" others leave a simple "good bye" or requests to "Write me first would you." Jennie's classmates signed their names along with their respective hometowns--some places hundreds of miles away from Walnut Hill--in Illinois or western Kentucky. At this time in the southern United States it was not uncommon for girls and young women from wealthier classes to be sent away to private institutions modeled after the English finishing school. Secondary and higher education became a symbol of class as poor or working class people could not afford this training. An album of quotes and well-wishes amongst female classmates in June 1857 as they were dispersing for the summer months. unknown books

Beginning in 1935 the Reich Labor Service Act mandated service to the German state. It was compulsory for both sexes with either service to charitable organizations or more often military projects. Rear wrapper neatly detached; old tide-line to upper margin of front wrapper; text tight and unmarked - a Good complete and sound copy. Signed in type and end of text by Charles F. Dunbar. Article reprinted from the April 1878 issue of Otis Kendall's Penn Monthly in which Stillé's original article had appeared two months earlier. Dunbar an eminent Harvard economist answers the criticisms of Stillé then provost of the University of Pennsylvania who had taken issue with the profferment of the Harvard Preliminary Examination for Women in the city of Philadelphia. Stillé's argument appears to have been based as much on parochialism as criticism of the exam's content; he was at this time working to raise the profile of Penn among elite American universities and resented the incursion of Harvard onto Penn's home turf. But Stillé evinces more than a little snobbery to say nothing of chauvinism in his assertion that ".no hot-house treatment which forces a precocious and unnatural development can ever produce that fruit which is the support and comfort of human life" - an assertion which Dr. Dunbar answers somewhat caustically: "These truths are well-worn and not denied but if they serve in connection any other purpose than that of a modest rhetorical embellishment it is because the relate to some fancied system quite different from that under discussion." <br/><br/>Despite widespread criticisms similar to the ones ably answered by Dunbar in the present essay The Harvard Examinations for Women - quite stringent covering a wide range of subjects and requiring their subjects to answer in at least two languages other than English - eventually became a national standard for the accreditation of young women who were unable whether for reasons of gender or circumstance to attend four-year universities. Stillé meanwhile became one of the University of Pennsylvania's historical icons; ".the extraordinary progress begun in his administration initiated the great expansion that was to continue under his immediate successors." Coming of age at the same time as the suffrage movement was reaching full swing the new technology offered by the automobile allowed women not only a newfound sense of freedom but the ability to travel unimpeded to demonstrate mastery of a new technology and even opened careers in mobility. This collection's vintage pieces include rare printed material on women and the automobile a signed license letters and photos from women who drove right over gender barriers explore the new world opening to women in the 20th century. <br/><br/>Leading up to the 20th century automobiles became a symbol of women's increasing social mobility and financial independence. Car makers and dealers realized that a significant number of women wanted and were capable of purchasing their own cars; and so they developed vehicles and marketing campaigns specifically for the female population. This collection's early 1913 brochure "To the American Woman" represents this trend and it declares that "the automobile . is of the greatest use to the woman.because of the importance of her work a woman's need for saving time and effort is imperative." The car saved wives and mothers time as they executed familial duties. It also provided some single women with independent incomes. As young women purchased their own vehicles some used the technology to support themselves by becoming mechanics and chauffeurs. These women are represented in this collection by a 1923 "Motor Magazine" with coverage on women car owners a vintage photo of the first woman to motor from Africa to London and an original 1929 Professional Chauffeur's License for Vivian Pickard. Pioneering women like those in this collection overcame gender barriers by increasing their mobility taking advantage of opportunities for mechanical and technical education thus opening new possibilities for women in transportation technology. unknown books

Under the terms of the act married women had the same rights over their property as unmarried women. This act therefore allowed a married woman to retain ownership of property which she might have received as a gift from a parent. Before the 1882 Married Women's Property Act was passed this property would have automatically have become the property of the husband. The Empire State Campaign Committee was a coalition of many suffrage organizations and was headed by famous activist Carrie Chapman Catt in order to bring New York women together in support of the state woman suffrage amendment. "Who dares say that war is not their business In the name of Justice and Civilization give women a voice in Government and in the councils that make or prevent war." 1 page. 7 x 5 in. Women press for the vote in this handbill by expressing their unique perspective and concerns on the effects of War including the labor to maintain the US economy health care for war casualties and support for widows and orphans. The pamphlet lists 9 questions on who pays the social costs of men leaving for foreign wars; for each question the answer is Women. WWI began in 1914 and in these early years the United States was declared neutral in the conflict. "Vote for the Women Suffrage Amendment in November." While Pennsylvania voters rejected the 1915 referendum to grant women of the state the right to vote the state was the 7th to ratify the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote on the federal level. Paper is brittle. Chips and small losses to top and bottom edges and 2 closed tears along left edge. Still god to very good condition. Their journal published between 1970-1974 covered a broad spectrum of issues facing women childcare welfare union organizing income inequality abortion sexual harassment racism imprisonment with the goal of striking "at the very root of women's oppression" envisioning "a total transformation of the subservient secondary status of women in all phases of life" Vol.1 No.1. In her hand Martindale writes in thanks of a friend's encouragement and sends a copy of her recent work. In full: "Here is my book. You were so encouraging about it that I hope you will accept this copy. The review have been good but the sales bad! Perhaps you would tell people about it" Martindale was an important advocate for women's employment rights in her day; she made history as one of the first woman factory inspectors in Victorian England and rose to become the Deputy Chief of her department. In 1938 she published a book on the history of women civil servants likely the book she references in the letter and upon her death her estate established a foundation dedicated to assisting British women working in male-dominated fields. Title "Photographs" in gilt. 230 snapshots in a variety of sizes most 3.5" x 4.5" inches but also 2.25" x 3.5" 1.5" x 2.25" and 7" x 5". Both black and white and sepia in glossy and matte finishes. Very occasionally torn along the fold and minor silvering to a few photos. The life of three sisters growing up in the Midwest is captured with warmth and incredible detail creating a culturally significant document of middle-class family life between the World Wars. The majority are captioned in white pencil or white ink with the name of the person in the photo and a brief description like "Sunday best"; some are a little ironic tone such as "Seeking sunburn" underneath a photo of two of the sisters sweaty and bare armed in a row boat and "No water but our tongues" under a picture of the sisters as little children in bathing suits on their porch pulling silly faces. 17042Women Education Handwritten Memory Album from female student with 36 handwritten entries from friends and admirers at school in New York and Massachusetts 1876-1882. A memorabilia recording many aspects of the first major movement of women's education in the United States brings depth to a movement that was groundbreaking in its time but today is largely at risk of disappearing from the historical record. 8.5 x 7.25 in. Original black leather boards. Gilt detail to spine and front cover. Filled with 36 entries nearly all of which appear to be young women who are friends and schoolmates including locations such as Holyoke and Northampton Massachusetts and several from New York and entries from Philadelphia Chicago and Colorado. Original owner Amy Vail was a student at Newburgh Female Seminary in Orange County NY and Miss Burnham's School in Northampton MA. Memory albums held autographs sentiments and reminiscences of friends and schoolmates similar to yearbooks today. Young women particularly those finishing their time at a female academy and preparing to leave their school friends tended to be the ones to create friendship albums. "Aimee the French have as past of "to love" but at Snake Hill they proved more clever For having a lovable girl in the present they Christened her "Amy" for ever." "When around thee dying Autumn leaves are lying Oh! then remember ours And at night when gazing On the gay hearth blazing Oh! still remember me." One entry is signed "Your Loving Schoolmate" by Kittie Kennedy and she places her location "Newburgh GFS" at her closing a female seminary in Orange County NY. Several other entries are also located at Newburgh. At some point Ms. Vail switched schools as the earlier entries from 1876-79 tend to center around Newburgh while later entries from Northampton around 1881 specify "Miss Burnham's School." Spine is worn. Scarce early treatise on women's suffrage in France. Women in France gained the right to vote in 1944 although suffrage activists had been working towards this goal for decades. The document calls on equality for women and lists notable women throughout history including Joan of Arc Catherine the Great Florence Nightingale and George Sand. It also mentions suffrage movements and policies in the United States including: Massachusetts Louisiana Montana Iowa New York Michigan Wyoming Colorado Utah and Idaho. Wyoming was the first US state to enfranchise women in 1890; by the time this pamphlet was printed women could vote in 6 states. It also mentions policies in Australia New Zealand and British India. Circular white sticker in top left corner of front cover not affecting text. Light diagonal scratches on front cover over author's name. In very good condition. First edition in very good condition of this omnibus of foundational works in women's education. The individual texts brought together in this publication were all wildly successful and went through multiple editions in both Europe and the United States. While "conduct books" aimed toward's women's self-improvement became popular in the mid-19th century this edition is remarkable for encouraging rational understanding and free thought in young women through a proper education Chapone as well as defending a woman's right to follow her conscience over blind obedience to marriage vows or social codes Pennington who divorced her husband and was cut off from her children. This illustrated edition of Mrs Hester Chapone's conduct book. Written for her niece who was 15 years old at the time. Throughout the letters Chapone encourages rational understanding through reading history and literature. She explicitly states that sentimental novels are to be avoided. With four illustrated plates and an illustrated title page. The topics discussed range from economy government politeness religion as well as the heart and affections. Chapone's Letters were written when the popularity of advice or conduct books were at its peak. It had over 28 editions printed and first editions are extremely rare this is an early edition. including a French translation. unknown books

Photos include images of the field hockey cricket and tennis teams; friends in school uniforms at leisure; and swimming in "the Baths". Friends are noted with their full names initials or nicknames such as "Tufty". Includes three cast photos from a school production of "Blue Beard" which was performed during summer term 1918.St. Mary's School was founded in 1873 as a girls' school and was at the forefront of the women's education movement in Britain. Just nine years earlier there were only 12 public secondary schools for girls in England and Wales and it wasn't until 1918 that compulsory schooling was required for children up to 14 years of age for both boys and girls. unknown books
