The book attempts to highlight certain pertinent aspects of family life, marriage scene, the place of parents and grandparents, and the ways of teenagers. Yet the main emphasis is on the fast expanding role of women in the workplace, sports, politics and the society itself. A good many example are given of what is happening in the western world, particularly in USA. The key to women's position is the rise of feminism; possibly the most important social movement in human history. And this surge of feminism in the last 50 years has brought a new dimension to the man-woman equation. The book endeavors to give the reader a glimpse of it. The Book titled "Discrimination Against Girl Child: The Trajectory of Missing Girls" deals with the topic of son preference and female foeticide in India and highlights the unfavourable child Sex ratio and the phenomenon of feminisation of the old and masculinisation of the young in the state of Kerala. There is sufficient content on the what, why and how of empowering girls and women. The book has three sections-first part is the real life story of a woman leader, on how she has risen up the ladder of success from the status of a doormat. Second part details the research on Missing Girls in Kerala for which son preference and the subsequent female foeticide are pointed out as A Few among the major causative factors. In the last part on 'Enhancing the Status and Dignity of Girl Child', almost all querries that spring up in the seminars and workshops aimed at women Empowerment are dealt with appropriate clarification. The life story of 'Vanitha' reveals how a postgraduate degree with a high first class and a huge package of dowry failed to contribute anything in enhancing the dignity of a Keralite girl, especially in her husband's home. In the last chapter, Vanitha's example itself is depicted to highlight how economic independence along with a strong determination would enable a woman to rise up from the status of a doormat to that of a woman leader living a life with dignity, so as to provide a motivation to every woman in distress. The Book is hoped to spark the rethinking of both men and women and facilitate social change for a better. ABOUT THE BOOK:- The present book critically observes the status of women in Central Asia after 1990's. The effects of Soviet legacy in the present context are also analyzed at extent. In contemporary transition period they are facing many problems including revival of religion, new democratic political order, capitalist economic system and traditional social system. These new changes have both negative and positive effects over the lives of women also. A modest attempt has been made to compare the differences in contemporary position of Kazakh and Uzbek women despite of their common USSR legacy and Islamic society. The relevance of this book can be judged both in the context of Islamic and Socialist Feminist theories and practices to understand patriarchal organization in Central Asian states. The streams of Socialist and Islamic Feminism are critically analyzed and further the way it made contribution in women's emancipation. Socialist feminism generally took every step in women emancipation in national interests rather than in women's interest. Though the book broadly deals with the position of women in Central Asia, but at the same time its focus is to study Kazakh and Uzbek women. Recent years have witnessed a concern at the marginal presence of women in Politics. The concern has been voiced through international for a on the one hand and national and local level women groups and academics on the other. The involvement of women in politics in now regarded as an important factor for a healthy democracy. No democracy can be termed as healthy, if half on the population does not participate in the political process. It is also being increasingly realized that participation as mere voters is not enough. It has to be followed by large scale participation in the policy-formulation and decision making process. This book is an attempt at analyzing the problems related to women’s political participation in the Indian context. ‘Gender’ and ‘patriarchy’ have been used as the conceptual framework. The environmental factors-socio-economic, political and cultural-are in some way or the other, directly related to the norms of ‘gender’ and ‘patriarchy’. This books is an attempt to understand, through a gender lens the ways in which society has been shaped, and the reins for that shaping. Women in Indian society, as everywhere, constitute half of its members, but still figure very little in its historiography. the papers collected here focus on different facets of women's history, but are linked by the common thread of trying to make visible, that which was invisible. 19th century gave predominant position to education, as the most significant instrument for changing women's subjugated position in the society. The spread of education made them aware of their rights and privileges in the society. By their untiring efforts it was proved beyond doubt that men were no longer 'tiny gods' for women and women no longer 'dolls' or 'footstools' for men. Both are equally fitted to help each other. In India, about three fourth of the population, still live in rural areas. The notion that women in rural societies enjoy relatively higher social status appears to be a myth. Gender discrimination is a social reality irrespective of the nature of societies and no universally applicable rule exist to measure the degree of status of women in various societies. There is an imperative need to delineate the factors determining the social and economic status of women and to make efforts to strengthen the process that help women to raise their status in the society through educational, political and economic empowerment. The present volume contains 18 papers by eminent scholars who are authorities in the field of Social Anthropology. The papers included in this book explore recent issues related to the socio-economic positions of women in tribal and rural societies. The issues include-Health, Nutrition, Education, Adoption, Inheritance, Succession, Marriage, Divorce and participation in Panchayat Raj. The papers of the volume also conclude that in spite of Government’s so called efforts, the agony of rural women continues. It is hope that the material incorporated in this volume will provide fresh information to the researchers and scholars alike. Women of Manipur both in the valley and the hills enjoy a comparatively better position than their counterparts in the rest of the country. For the last many decades they have actively participated in the social, economic, cultural and political life of the state. Though the society is deeply patriarchal, women are the major bread earners, and except in the policy making they enjoy considerable freedom in their day to day life. The book tries to bring out the fact that in spite of the vast differences in the life styles and social structures among the women of Manipur, there are considerable similarities too and as their roles widened they are mentally and intellectually equipped to tackle problems of the state, terrorism, violence inflicted on innocent citizens and other conflicting problems between the state and the insurgents. Patriarchal discourses however perpetuating evidently do not always succeed in drowning women out from the various social and political movements in Manipur. The study also covers present issues and a number of workable suggestions are also proposed to bring the women to the mainstream of development and bring about their emancipation completely. The study also tries to look at the women of Manipur like the Meiteis, the Kukis, the Nagas and the Meitei-Pangal or Muslim women from the traditional to modern scenario which provides vital information. It is hoped that this study which is an exploratory study will be of immense help to students, research scholars and others interested in women study. About The Author:- Dr. Tingneichong G.
