ABOUT THE BOOK:- This book is here because of fifteen years of research. During this time, I was witness to women’s superiority, women doing better in every field. Women now control research and research outcomes. This has led to the destruction of old and dangerous myths about the biological inferiority of women espoused by men. Through this new research, women’s bodies and minds have in fact been proven superior. I want women and girls to continue on this trend of becoming scholars and progressive thinkers like Amina Wadud. Her authority over the Quran is not matched by anyone else. Upon reading her books, I knew my research was complete. She has the ability to be analytical without taking a man’s perspective. I hope that women and girls everywhere will take a stand for themselves and learn of their superiority. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- I was born in Damoh on November 14, 1949. My maternal grandfather, Dr. N. Chetterge delivered me. His wife, my grandmother, was a jew and they raised my mother as a Christian. My father's family belongs to the landlords. His mother's first cousin was Zakir Hussain, the first Muslim President of India. I have four brothers who have remained in India. After a call from my Uncle to visit, I departed to America in 1975. In 1977, I married Mirza Baig. We have two children. My son Zameer is married and has a child, Noah. My daughter is a practicing lawyer who earned her J.D. from Northwestern University in Chicago. I was educated at St. John's College in Agra and Aligarh University. I later earned my political science degree from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. I became interested in women's empowerment so I received my PhD in Gender Equality from Lucknow University. CONTENTS:- ?Acknowledgements 11 Preface 13 1. Introduction 15 Why Men are Bad? This book is an outcome of a National Seminar organized by the Department of Political Science, HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar under the UGC-SAP-DRS programme during November 19-20, 2007 on "Women Empowerment in Garhwal Himalayas : Constraints and Prospects". The objective of this book is to explore the challenges and constraints which hamper women's participation in development programmes as a decision maker and identity as a group. Women of Garhwal Himalayas play a major role in managing natural resources, agriculture and economy and they also suffer from the environmental mismanagement, yet they are neither consulted nor is their plight taken into account by the strategists and planners while making policies. In view of women's contribution towards the society and economy, the purpose of this book is to highlight the situation of women empowerment; realities and its impact on socio-economic justice in general and in particular to the Garhwal Himalayas. Actually there are innumerable issues of the women of Garhwal Himalayas, on which policy decisions and concrete actions need to be taken to ensure full participation and empowerment of the women. This book consists of the papers presented during the seminar in which the authors have suggested the ways and means through which the women can face the environmental, social, and economic challenges and use the clauses of empowerment for their betterment in development programmes and policies. This book also examines how despite poverty, poor health, socio-economic and educational status, women of Garhwal Himalayas are playing a vital role for the society. It also highlights the social, economic, institutional and functional constraints that impair the functioning of women in the policies and development programmes. It is hoped that this book would be helpful to the scholars, development workers, NGO's and policy planners to encourage rural women's empowerment and participation in development programmes. ABOUT THE BOOK:- Social exclusion has become one of the important themes in contemporary social policy debates in both the developed and developing countries. It has become central to policy and academic discourse in Western Europe, and increasingly in other parts of the globe. In India, the exclusion discourse is closely linked with a wide range of socio-economic inequality. The most rigorous form of exclusion is practiced by the institution of caste, followed by religion, ethnicity and gender. The contours of the exclusion perpetuated by these variables constantly change with the context, time and space. Many social groups in India have been experiencing some form of inequality or social exclusion. Across social groups, women face exclusion and discrimination in many areas of life, though their status varies significantly according to their social and ethnic backgrounds. The history of civilisation shows that women were excluded from the public sphere. There are separate spaces for women and men. By tradition also, the public sphere is male domain and women have been confined to their homes (private sphere) and relegated to the background. Divided Spaces: Discourse on Social Exclusion and Women in India make a unique contribution to the literature on social exclusion and inclusion. This book explores several forms of social exclusion in the context of India and brings together leading scholars from several of the disciplines that have developed concepts of exclusion and various dimensions of exclusion/inclusion. It is hoped that this volume contributes to our understanding of the complexities of social exclusion and provide policymakers with guidance for corrective policies and social inclusion to combat the different forms of social exclusion. This book is useful and essential reading for students and scholars of political science, sociology, anthropology, history and cultural studies. It will also strike sparks with those with a professional research interest in social exclusion/inclusion. menopause among the rural women, though India is one of the signatories to the plan of action of the ICPD (1994) Cairo conference. So far, emphasis of the reproductive health programs has been only on mother and child health. Rarely do we find consideration having been given to the gynecological issues. It is in this context that our empirical micro-level research on menopause using multiple methodologies, integrating qualitative and quantitative techniques, gains significance. Also, in spite of repeated recommendations made by the WHO, there is no uniform and clear terminology to define various phases of menopause. We have tried to fill this gap by conducting an ethnographic study in rural north Karnataka. This work focuses on various issues of menopause as age at menopause, timing of menopause, menopausal phases, menopause symptoms and their management, and after-effects of menopause. In fine this research attempts to make a significant contribution towards advancing our knowledge in understanding different aspects of menopause. About The Author:- Dr. Jyoti S. The way that computing is presented and taught in schools has a major impact on girls’ third level choice and can motivate them to either choose computing or reject it as a career choice. Girls’ interest in communication, group work and social usefulness needs to be stimulated by presenting computing as a communication too and emphasising its social dimensions, as well as its technical possibilities, within the educational curriculum. This book aimed to identify barriers to women’s participation and progression in computing and to highlight positive factors that influence women’s career choice and academic success. It indicates that the problem of women’s under-representation does not lie in women’s lack of ability or interest, or their false perception of computing, but rather in the academic and cultural environment which is inherently, as well as stereotypically masculine. About The Author:- Mr. K.K. Sharma is an eminent historian who has rich contribution in numerous fields of historical researches. He has contributed in various seminars having deep links with the socio-economic condition of women as well as the great utility of computers. At present Shri Sharma is Asst. The Health care systems in India are very complex and diverse. Besides, the variety of systems existing, the age old family / community customs, norms and practices are widely adopted. The empirical evidence collected from six states and 48 villages show that faulty infant feeding practices and restricting the diet of the pregnant and lactating mother are stumbling blocks to timely health care and modern medication. The dogged adherence to superstition and belief in soothsayers and Ojhas do not permit women to take to Rural Health Mission infrastructure and facilities. Besides, ignoring the socio-economic causes and determinants to the rising Infant Mortality and Maternal Mortality has to be reviewed. Laying emphasis on pure clinical and medical causes for IMR and MMR needs and urgent review by Planners. Womens lack of empowerment is also a vital determinanat for the status of IMR and MMR.
