The extremely scarce Portugese edition of Atlas der Geburtshülflicher Abbildungen the important work of obstetrical plates by Dietrich Wilhelm Heinrich Busch first published the previous year. This was the first such obstetrical work published in Portuguese. Very Good. Eliza Caroline 'Lida' Obenchain, (1856-1935) was an American author, women's rights advocate, and suffragist from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Lida Obenchain, writing under the pen name Eliza Calvert Hall, was widely known early in the twentieth century for her short stories featuring an elderly widowed woman, 'Aunt Jane', who plainly spoke her mind about the people she knew and her experiences in the rural south. Beulah Strong (1866-1951) was an artist and illustrator. She Studied at the Academie Julien France from 1887-1892 where she was the classmate of Cincinnati artist Elizabeth Nourseand. She taught art at Potter College in Bowling Green Ky, from 1892-1901 and Smith College as an associate professor of art from 1907-1923. She lived in Italy after she retired, until WWII broke out. She is known for her work on Hall's novels, 'Aunt Jane of Kentucky' and 'Land of Long Ago.' NW62

Plates and text are separated by guard sheets. "Aunt Louisa" was a pseudonym of Laura Valentine general editor of Warne's publishing house. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Jennie Z. Banks Presented by her Uncle C. Jack Christmas 1874." Each story includes one double-page illustration. In Very Good Condition: corners are rubbed with minor fraying; front joint rubbed with 1-cm. split in cloth; back board slightly rubbed; front is clean and bright; finger-soiling on a few guard pages and one page of text; otherwise clean and bright.
