18706413Veracruz; Puebla 1870. Very good. 4202pp. Original printed boards with brown cloth spine. Edges rubbed minor soiling. Bookplate on front pastedown; ink stamp and pencil ownership inscription on title page. Internally clean. Originally published in 1824 by Ackermann in London this was one of several texts produced for export to the Spanish-speaking American market. Meant for the education of the fairer sex this work was more specifically targeted at the young women of Buenos Aires. Written under the fiction of a female "author" the book compares the education of women in America with that in Europe. The author criticizes the French model centered on the art of pleasing and favors the English one based on moral instruction. The work contains twelve letters addressing different aspects of women's education: moral intellectual domestic physical and religious within a traditional framework that emphasizes domesticity household care and obedience. There were several subsequent editions including Mexico in 1851 Havana in 1863 and the present edition. All are quite scarce. We locate this edition in a single copy at Syracuse University. unknown

1867List309Virginia City: Sutterley and Co 1867. Albumen photograph on mount 4 x 2 ½ inches. Pauline Cushman was an actress and one of the most successful spies for the Union Army. She ingratiated herself with the Confederate army by toasting Jefferson Davis after one of her performances. She was eventually caught and sentenced to death by hanging. She was spared only due to the arrival of the Union Army.

After the war she toured the country giving lectures and performances recounting her experiences as a spy. She eventually headed west marrying in 1872 in San Francisco and eventually working a range of jobs in Arizona Territory Texas and eventually back in San Francisco where she died in 1893 at age 60 from a morphine overdose.

We find no record of this portrait which was taken by the Sutterley brothers James and Clement in their Virginia City Nevada studio somewhere between 1864 and 1867. The Sutterleys operated out of their studio on the Union block of Virginia City for five years before dissolving their partnership in 1867. It is likely that the portrait was taken during one of Cushman’s tours throughout the region during these years.

A beautifully preserved example in very good condition with a small chip to upper margin and some fading. Though Cushman ostensibly would have sold cartes-de-visite in support of her touring few survive on the market today. Sutterley and Co unknown

1870List36102New York: Howell 1870. Carte de viste portrait on larger mount with printed studio imprint “Howell 807 & 869 B’way†on mount. 2 ½ x 4 inches. Excellent condition and contrast. Three-quarter bust portrait of Stowe facing slightly left wearing a dark dress with ruffled trim and a cameo brooch at the collar; her hair arranged in tight ringlets framing the face one of at least two poses from this sitting that were published. The Broadway address dates Howell’s New York studio operation to the post–Civil War period. Stowe author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin 1852 published more than thirty books including Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp 1856 The Minister’s Wooing 1859 and Oldtown Folks 1869. Uncle Tom’s Cabin sold an estimated 300000 copies in its first year in the United States and was widely credited with intensifying sectional debate over slavery in the decade preceding the Civil War. Stowe lectured extensively in the United States and Britain in the 1850s and remained a public literary and reform figure into the Reconstruction era; cartes de visite such as this one were often sold as keepsakes for touring lecturers. Stowe’s likeness was reproduced by multiple studios during and after the height of her fame. A strong New York imprint of one of the most widely recognized American women of the nineteenth century. 18705091Portland Me: Geo. Stinson & Co 1870. Very good. Carte-de-visite 3.75 x 2.5 inches. Minor soiling and foxing. A lovely and early image of Tennie C. Claflin -- suffragist Spiritualist and Wall Street Broker. Along with her notorious sister Victoria Woodhull Claflin opened a Wall Street brokerage firm in 1870 likely issuing this image as part of the promotion of the endeavor. Other copies or version we have found include the caption "Tennie C. Claflin Broker." Claflin also owned and edited a weekly newspaper with her sister starting in 1870 Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly a publication that advocated Free Love and other radical ideas. The pair famously tried to vote unsuccessfully in 1871. Their brokerage firm collapsed in the Panic of 1873 and they later moved to London following a bout of scandal involving Henry Ward Beecher. 188012946New York: C.D. Fredricks & Co. Theatrical Portrait Gallery No. 2 1880. Cartes-de-visite photograph 3.5 x 2.25 inches on a slightly larger studio mount. Minor wear and dust-soiling. Very good. A charming photocollage incorporating tiny headshots of a hundred women of the American theater in the late-19th century into one CDV. Each portrait is numbered corresponding to a printed list of the names of each of the 100 women on the verso of the photograph. Taking her rightful place near the center of the photograph and pictured larger than everyone else is Charlotte Cushman 1816-1876 an international force on the stage and considered the finest American actress of her age. The image was produced by the New York photographic firm belonging to Charles DeForrest Fredricks a legendary world-hopping photographer with a fascinating story all his own to be told on another day. The photocollage was likely compiled from the legion of portraits Fredricks' studio produced for Broadway actresses over the course of more than twenty years after establishing his New York studio in 1855.
