Very scarce. <br/><br/>Attracted by the ideals of the "Declaration of Independence" Fanny Wright traveled extensively through the U.S.A. tracking how those ideals were being realized. In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. All in all Fanny Wright became one of the most remarkable women of the first half of the 19th century: among other accomplishments being the first woman to write this work the first travelogue by a woman. "By the Representation of the People Act of 1918 women are given the Parliamentary Vote for the first time. It is estimated that the number of women thus enfranchised will be six million." The Representation of the People Act of 1918 granted the vote to women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification. The same Act gave the vote to all men over the age of 21. As a result of this act 8.5 million women joined the electorate and made up almost 40% of all voters in the United Kingdom. This was a great victory for the women's suffrage movement which had been calling for voting rights since the 1830s. Militant suffrage groups in the UK were even known for campaigns of destruction and mayhem in order to keep their issue in the forefront of everyone's minds. Horizontal fold line ¼" from top edge. North Dakota had several 19th-century attempts at women's suffrage which all failed to pass. The League was established in 1912 and pushed another referendum in 1914. It too failed to pass. North Dakota was the twentieth state to ratify the 19th Amendment in 1919 finally granting the vote to women. unknown

Near Fine with minor corner wear. <br /> <p>The North Dakota Votes for Women League was organized in 1911 and held their first state convention the following year in Fargo. The first statewide referendum on women's suffrage took place in 1914 but failed. In 1917 women gained the right to vote in municipal and presidential elections in North Dakota. Women press for the vote in this handbill by expressing their unique perspective and concerns on the effects of War including the labor to maintain the US economy health care for war casualties and support for widows and orphans. The pamphlet lists 9 questions on who pays the social costs of men leaving for foreign wars; for each question the answer is Women. WWI began in 1914 and in these early years the United States was declared neutral in the conflict. "Vote for the Women Suffrage Amendment in November." While Pennsylvania voters rejected the 1915 referendum to grant women of the state the right to vote the state was the 7th to ratify the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote on the federal level. Paper is brittle. Chips and small losses to top and bottom edges and 2 closed tears along left edge. Still god to very good condition.
