Probably Japan: late Edo.

A beautiful album of finely rendered drawings of bamboo accompanied by explanatory text. There has been a long tradition in both China since the eighth century and Japan of illustrating bamboo with much thought given to composition and the painting of the stems knots branches and leaves. A number of treatises were written on the subject.

This handsomely painted manuscript contains many illustrations all finely painted or brush-drawn of bamboo. Following the title there are two leaves which are somewhat soiled illustrating the yin and yang of the three variations of bamboo painting. They include how to place the brush on the drawing surface and how to maneuver the brush and lift it at just the right moment the calligraphy techniques are named. R A R E ! A lovely painting of a Mandarin. the verso of this painting has a small sticker at lower left with "Made in China" prin- ed on it. The painting was done with a skilled and steady hand with attention to detail using a very fine brush typical of the time. The Mandarin wears a blue silk gown with delicate gold wave pattern embroidered on it. On the chest is a black silk embroidery with a white crane and the rank badge typical furry "cravat" or neck decoration. He also wears the typical Imperial Mandarin's hat. In order to exalt ancestors it was common to execute such paintings posthumously to elevate relatives of or to offic- ialdom. This piece of unique and original hand-painted art work is ready for library display. BIBLIOGRAPHY: 1. Worshipping the Ancestors issued by the Smithsonian 2. Jan Stuart & Evelyn S. Currie of Mapledurham Oxfordshire from The Forsyte Saga.

John Galsworthy's The Forsyte Saga is a multi-novel & short story series following the tumultuous lives of a wealthy English family as they navigate relationships and changing times in the late-19th and early 20th centuries. A Modern Comedy is the sequel to the series consisting of three aditional novels and two interludes.

The artist Miss C.B. Currie Caroline Billin Curry 1849-1940 was one of the most beloved book painters of the 20th century who spent the majority of her career working for Henry Sotheran Booksellers in London. "She became famous for her miniature paintings applied to two art forms. First on ivory mounted on Rivière bindings and named by her employer as "Cosway" bindings. Later she expanded her work into the art of painting on the fanned edge of a book -- called a fore-edge painting. Most of these paintings were signed and numbered by the artist. Whereas fore-edge painting history is replete with unknown artists Currie is a notable exception. In the book world the name Miss C.B. Currie is widely recognized yet her personal life and real name remained guarded and unknown until now. It turns out her name was in fact partly a pseudonym. Though her work is highly prized there is no known published biography. Her correct full name was recently discovered to be Caroline Billin Curry. During her entire artistic career Curry used the slightly altered version of her name "Currie". Her true full name is not to be found in any published record of her work from Sotheran's" Weber.

Provenance: Sotheran's catalogue 819 supplement item 1690 illustrated; Christie's London 29th October 1969 lot 19 purchased by E. One small oil painting on canvas sized 8.5 x 11 in. preserved as original stretched canvas within the frame as presented to the artist’s sister Ruth Annis Hobby Gibbs 1878-1940 Scouticut Neck Fairhaven Massachusetts with the original wooden frame now professionally cleaned and w/ artist’s signature in lower right corner of painting this painting was presented with a gift inscription in Chinese å二月廿五號一ä¹äºŒä¹ December 25 1929 and given with others by the artist over a 10 year period in the 1920’s-1930’s to his sister and held in the family until 2025. This original oil painting portrays a Chinese-American woman and child strolling past shop windows in Chinatown w/ awnings and fire-escapes looming above while another person carrying large basket walks away and another small child looks on. After settling in San Francisco’s Chinatown less than 6 years before the artist had launched his lifetime work to depict through oil paints and pen & ink the quintessential life to be discovered in Chinatown. Eventually he would issue a book just 7 years later in 1936 of Chinatown sights and attractions filled with his pen & ink illustrations. Hobby 1886-1964 was the son of an Iowa City IA ophthalmologist and moved with the family as a teenager to San Diego CA about 1900 about the time his sister Ruth Annis Hobby voyaged to marry her fiance during the Philippine Insurrection in 1899 in Manila. He studied art at the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines the Art Students League in New York and became portrait and landscape painter in San Diego until 1923. After a divorce from Plooma Crowther he settled in San Francisco in Chinatown where he became an instructor at the Art Center while also painting and sketching the densely populated area publishing “The Street of Dragon Lanterns Chinatown of San Francisco†in 1936 while contracting with the Madison & Burke Agency through World War II. Exhibits of his paintings and pen & ink sketches were displayed at the Oakland Art Gallery in 1928 and the Society for Sanity in Art in 1945. See: Maud McB. 98166101Japan n.d. ca 1830. A superb scroll painting on silk 39.5 cm. wide by 233 cm. long painting size: 29.5 x 185cm. fine mounting pale silk chrysanthemum patterned border flawless flawless excellent pastel colors excellent condition.RARE! THIS IS A GREAT AND STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL HAND-PAINTED SCROLL THE SUBJECT: Kato Kiyomasa 1562-1611 was the son of Kiyotada a relative of Hideyoshi Toyotomi and served him and distinguished himself as one of the seven most famous warriors of that time by his heroic acts at the Battle of Shizugadatake. . During the invasion of Korea he followed Yukinaga Konishi -1600 to Pusan and on to Seoul in 1592 where he fought so fiercely that the Koreans named him "Devil Kiyomasa." Yukinaga was a Christian warrior & retainer of Hideie Ukita and was appointed Lord of Settsu by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. . Hideyoshi appointed these two to spearhead the Korean invasion with Yukinaga the commander. The plan was to launch waves of army corps by ship across the 56 mile wide Tsushima straits to Pusan. Some 300000 fighting men a truly serious force embarked. The first force of 9200 Samurai armed with matchlocks bows and swords set out. Upon landing they rapidly advanced North up the peninsula taking out Korean castles and subduing the regions through power of force. They advanced to Seoul as the armies divided into two parts each racing to see who would enter Seoul first. . At Cho-ryung pass they united then both advanced on Seoul & took the castle as the Korean King and his entourage fled over the river at Imjin where the Koreans up their valiant effort to check the Japanese. This is a most magnificent painting of both Kiyomasa and Yukinaga as each holds a Naginada while the Korean King prepares to rides a black steed effecting his escape while being protected by a retainer who also holds an elaborate Naganada with the Imperial banner. THE ARTIST AND PAINTING SCHOOL: . This work was done in the Utagawa school style and was likely painted by Utagawa Kuniyoshi or one of his star pupils. It was painted in the "Ukiyo-e" style similar to that of a color woodblock print. . It is painted in a firm solid confident strong hand this work is executed with most impressive brush strokes style & manner expressing the Bushido spirit celebrating triumph over the Koreans. Marvelous detail to the whole work renders this a major piece. Skillfully drawn & painted on silk which is the most difficult medium to control ink flow this work is flawless and a fine example worthy of display in any Tokunoma. . The top is blue paper with black Sumi inscription naming the heroes and citing the Korean Battle. REFERENCE: For biographical details see JAPAN BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA & WHO'S WHO pp.592 689-90. .
