An encounter that was held at the Benaki Museum in cooperation with the Tsarouchis Foundation 4 July-23 September 2002 as a tribute to the great set and costume designer and painter Lila de Nobili 1916-2002. Lila de Nobili associated her name with theatrical and operatic works that left their mark on the aesthetics of stage design in postwar Europe. Her meeting with Yannis Tsarouchis during the 1960s and 1970s particularly during the years of his self-exile in France evolved into a close and lifelong friendship and into an on-going dialogue about the essence of painting and art more generally. In this book more than 200 works by Lila de Nobili have been gathered together from the Yannis Tsarouchis Museum and private collections as well as samples of her work in the theatre and the opera models for sets costume designs etc. and of her skill as a painter illustrations of books impressions of Italy etc. At the same time works by Yannis Tsarouchis are presented that demonstrate the artistic kinship and common concerns of the two artists. // Se trata del catalogo que acompana a la exposicion Lila de Nobili Giannis Tsarouhis. 21004101Japan ca. 1915. A color silk painting 30 x 20 cm. very clean and solid on very fine silk finely drawn & executed in color gouache. RARE ORIGINAL PAINTED ART WORK . . . AN ORIGINAL FINELY HAND-PAINTED . . . COLOR EROTIC SCENE . . . TAISHO PERIOD 1912-1926 . This work shows a Buddhist monk wearing a common Kimono with shaved head disguised as a commoner. He secretly visits his lover and willing bed partner. She appears to be a house wife obviously of another man. Buddhist priests never married though they carried on an erotic life style. . She wears an elaborate silk Kimono with period coiffure. Spreading her legs keeping her knees back welcoming her lover. Her feet express ecstasy curled and pointing upwards clutching her lover tight and close to her. The monk holds her back firmly and with his right hand grasping her knee keeping them up and back thus forcing her wide open. . She is flushed with excitement showing a pink facial flush eyes closed in ecstasy. There is a gray Furoshiki large silk scarf tied into a bag above the woman. It most likely contains the monks Buddhist robes. He thus avoids the attention of others when walking the streets. . CONDITION: The painting is flawlessly executed. It's very clean and solid no stain or other issues of importance. . The work was probably mounted on a stiff album page in its past. It has been expertly 'lifted' and shows the usual but minimal remains at the right and left edges which does not encroach on the painting. What little remains is easily matted out. There are a few small verso mends using period Washi handmade Japanese paper which will not be very visible from the front when mounted on white paper. . A very nicely executed example with good colors ready for matting and framing . Color photos are posted to our website. . REFERENCE: . Erotic books prints & paintings were "suppressed" by the Tokugawa Shogunate therefore the majority of these kinds of erotic sold on the 'black market' and not distributed openly. . These erotic paintings drawings and woodblock printed Shunga books & art remained on the 'fringe.' The Shogunate enforced stiff penalties for artists block cutters publishers & printers of erotica. The Shogunate and its sensors would not approve or provide Kiwame censor's seal for this category of art or books. Items without Kiwame were subject to confiscation and anyone involved with the items when distributed to the general public were often harshly punished with imprisonment. These remained in 'private collections' and were strictly & discretely sold traded and distributed 'under the table' during the Edo period 1603-1867. . REFERENCES: . AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR PAINTING SIGNED by Dulac and reprinted as one of the illustrations for the publication of COMUS. With a copy of the book itself first edition thus from the L.E.C. in a printing of 1500 numbered copies. The painting is of a woman standing in field of flowers within the curve of a dragon’s tale. Behind her is a large tree laden with fruit and with additional floral and arboreal decorations in the background. The book contains the printed version of this work along with 5 other colourplates from original watercolours by Dulac. This was the last book to be illustrated by Dulac. With frame16.5†13.5†the painting is now handsomely matted and presented in silver-leafed wooden frame. The book is in the publisher’s original parchment backed marbled boards the spine lettered in gilt and housed in the original black slipcase lettered in gilt. 58 16. The original painting in beautiful condition very handsomely framed and presented the book is a fine and bright copy the slipcase only with very minor wear. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL PAINTING BY EDMUND DULAC. Dulac is considered one of the most original and prolific book illustrator’s of the first two decades of the 20th century. His name is often linked with Arthur Rackham as they both produced illustrations for lavish gift books for children and adults which were of the highest quality and commercial success. Dulac born a Frenchman settled in England to build his artistic career. He quickly caught the eye of J.M Dent publishers and produced illustrations for an illustrated edition of Jane Eyre in 1905. But it was when he was discovered by Leicester Galleries that his career actually took off. They had been seeking another talented artist of the stature and appeal of Arthur Rackham for children’s gift book illustrations. At that time children’s books were purchased by the wealthy as symbols of good taste and there was a huge market to be captured by a new imaginative artist. Dulac was the perfect choice.<br> Dulac offered a new sensibility to book illustration by his intense use of color his Eastern atmosphere his brightly jeweled patterns and mystical themes. His work met with instant success and approbation. From 1907 with the publication of his magnificent Arabian Nights until 1914 with the issue of Sinbad the Sailor he published an annual collection of outstanding watercolors for gift books for children. These books included: The Tempest in 1908 the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in 1909 Sleeping Beauty in 1910 Stories from Hans Anderson in 1911 Bells and other Poems Edgar Allan Poe in 1912 and Princess Badoura in 1913. During the war years when an understandable shift in publishing took place he produced Princess Mary’s Gift Book King Albert’s Books Edmund Dulac’s Picture Book for the French Red Cross and in 1916 Edmund Dulac’s Fairy Book. All of his books were highly praised and he became one of the most sought after illustrators in the world.<br> Dulac as a young artist had been deeply inspired by William Morris Walter Crane and Aubrey Beardsley. He had a spiritual temperament which developed throughout his life and was intensified by his exposure to Eastern mysticism. Much of his art was inspired by Persian miniatures in its use of bright radiant colors detailed patterns and asymmetrical compositions. He aimed to take his art out of the realm of representation and into a more subjective mystical “eternal†plane. He produced some of the most enduring works of beauty and transcendence during his artistic career and continues to be appreciated and collected to this day.<br> Dulac's illustrations conjure the mysterious atmosphere of the oriental text and transport the reader to a lyrical world of grace and beauty. “The Arabian Nights gave Dulac an opportunity to indulge in his nocturnes; the the softness of the gleam of moonlight on stone or on shadowy figures and his use of ultramarine indigo and Prussian blue mingled with purples and violets brought to the illustrations the calm and mystery of Eastern nights.â€-Colin White<br> Dulac's illustrations evoked the oriental atmosphere in a new and beautiful way and he treated each picture with a seriousness that brought him great praise showing that he like any fine easel painter could accomplish great art even for use in the book arts. One large oil painting on canvas sized 15.25 x 20 in. preserved as original stretched canvas within the frame as presented to the artist’s sister Ruth Annis Hobby Gibbs 1878-1940 and with the original green-stained frame now professionally cleaned faintly touched up in a couple indiscernible spots and backed w/ archival paper. Although unsigned this painting was presented with others by the artist over a 10 year period in the 1920’s-1930’s to his sister and held in the family until 2025. This original oil painting captures a street scene of young Chinese-American family strolling past Yee Sang Tong’s Chinese apothecary vividly displaying the historic building’s exterior a peek at the street around-the-corner and the advertising signage fronting the building in Chinese painted by Hobby. These signs include è£•ç”Ÿå ‚ Yee Sang Tong; åƒèŒ¸çŽ‹ç‰Œ Can song wangpai - premium ginseng and deer antler velvet products; and å„é …ä¸¸æ•£è—¥é…’ Ge xiang wan san yaojiu can ring wangpai - pills powders and medicinal tinctures of all kinds. Chinese-American apothecaries and pharmacies continued to be well-respected into the 20th-Century as Chinese-Americans were generally barred access from San Francisco’s hospitals and clinics and were often unfairly blamed for many of the diseases that occasionally swept the city. They often prescribed and distributed such traditional drugs as quinine digitalis and ephedrine. Hobby 1886-1964 was the son of an Iowa City IA ophthalmologist and moved with the family as a teenager to San Diego CA about 1900 about the time his sister Ruth Annis Hobby voyaged to marry her fiance during the Philippine Insurrection in 1899 in Manila. He studied art at the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines the Art Students League in New York and became portrait and landscape painter in San Diego until 1923. After a divorce from Plooma Crowther he settled in San Francisco in Chinatown where he became an instructor at the Art Center while also painting and sketching the densely populated area publishing “The Street of Dragon Lanterns Chinatown San Francisco†in 1936 while contracting with the Madison & Burke Agency through World War II. Exhibits of his paintings and pen & ink sketches were displayed at the Oakland Art Gallery in 1928 and the Society for Sanity in Art in 1945. See: Maud McB.
