In 327 pages with an Introductory Notice of the Author. Copyrighted in 1893 by John C. Winston who also provided the lithographed Frontispiece from 1890 this is the 1894 edition by Pilgrim's Progress Publishing Co. Small quarto 7.75" x 10" has brilliantly decorated brown cloth boards stamped with an elaborate design of Christian on his journey & black lettering to front & spine. Condition is VG- minus: quite clean with the occasional spot or smudge text block strong & straight though both hinges are cracked & rear endpapers have become detached. Modest rubbing to extremities very heavy at both ends of spine & all corners--all show slight tears & fraying. Pages creamy white with age-appropriate tanning heavier to edges. Light foxing to title page which becomes quite heavy on the adjacent tissued guard. No DJ as issued: the boards are lovely enough! Jerusalem Delivered La Gerusalemme liberata is an epic poem by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso first published in 1581 which tells a largely mythified version of the First Crusade in which Catholic knights led by Godfrey of Bouillon battle Muslims in order to take Jerusalem. The poem is composed of eight line stanzas grouped into 20 cantos of varying length. The poem was immensely successful throughout Europe and over the next two centuries various sections were frequently adapted as individual storylines for madrigals operas plays ballets and masquerades; scenes from the poem were also depicted in paintings and frescoes. Cover board depicts 'The Charmed Fawn' states John McLoughlin Successor to ELTON & CO Publisher but the books themselves collected and rebound together only state Elton & CO as publishers. Spine and back board are a maroon wrapping with tanned endpapers. All four books are in tact and complete within the book but have foxing and wear due to age/use. A bound copy of a weekly souvenier publication which was produced to mark the 1857 Art Treasures Exhibition which was held in Manchester. It remains the largest art exhibition ever to be held in the UK if not the World with over 16000 exhibits. It attracted over 1.3 million visitors in the 142 days it was open. The two chromolithographs show the building - a temporary iron-and-glass structure similar to the Crystal Palace in London 656 feet long and 200 feet wide with one central barrel vault 56 feet wide. Its selection and display of artworks had a formative influence on the public art collections that were then being established in the UK such as the National Gallery National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
