They produced 21 woodcuts and 36 lively and colorful plates to represent the range of characters and situations described in the book. The success of Life in London was so great that the artists could not color the engravings quickly enough for the demand. 185717417
London H. Hering n.d. 1857 First edition. Undated but the December 12 1857 issue of Bent's Literary Advertiser lists the book as recently published. The identity of the poet is unclear though a children's phonic reading book published in 1876 reprints the poem and attributes it to a Frances S. Hodgson not to be confused of course with Secret Garden author Frances E. Hodgson Burnett. Publisher's color-printed white pictorial boards with blue cloth spine. Pale yellow endpapers. . Oblong quarto. . Richly color printed on every leaf. Illumination inspired by the work of Owen Jones and Noel Humphreys. The designs incorporate medieval illumination-inspired initial letters and decorative bands. Text in Gothic script. Foxing to boards and some edgewear. Contemporary ink ownership signature Eliza Maude Widdas to front flyleaf and twentieth century bookplate Edward J. Law to front pastedown. Very clean and bright throughout. A very good copy of a scarce book. We could not locate much information on Elizabeth Howard-Vyse née Seymour 1815 – 1892 and Fanny Lucy Cecilia Greville 1831 – 1912 in the sources available to us. Howard-Vyse also published a travel account A Winter in Tangier and Home Through Spain 1882. This appears to be Greville's only published book. Howard-Vyse was married to Lt. Col. George Howard-Vyse at the time the present work was published; the couple lived in Windsor which was likely also the home of Greville who was the daughter of a Vice-Admiral in the British Navy. Henry Hering 1814 – 1893 was a publisher society photographer and the last in a family line of bookbinders. Though his primary business venture was not printing he did dabble in printing religious texts and gift books often with his partner Remington and was a promoter of Achille Colas' relief printing process.
H. This copy with a duplicate of the plate facing in Volume I. Music. Overall an excellent copy.

"The book appeared in part-issues at the rate of one or two a week between April of 1843 and December of 1845. The major attraction of Le diable à Paris resides in Gavarni's plates which are of even greater interest than the 320 wood engravings of his Oeuvres choisies 207. The engraving is superior for the most part and they are new conceptions not versions of his lithographs. He limits himself almost entirely to single figures or pairs evoked with his usual concentration and psychological subtlety. He had a free hand with his subjects since his designs are quite unrelated to Hetzel's text. As usual he arranged them as series some of which those devoted to writers and politicians for example are largely unprecedented in his previous repertory. He invaded Daumier's world with success in the fifteen plates of 'Bourgeois' exampled in the self-satisfied worthy reproduced II 328" Ray.

Hiler 237. J. Hetzel unknown

Minimal restoration of spines to a few volumes tiny chip to fore- edge of Part I otherwise an excellent and quite lovely set. Chemised and housed in a red cloth clamshell case with black leather spine label lettered in gilt.

"Although Surtees approached his publishers in July 1861 with the idea of bringing out 'Mr. Facey Romford' they preferred not to undertake the matter until Mr. Leech's services were definitely secured and there would be no questoin of such delays as had occurred in the illustrations of 'Handley Cross.' Leech promised however to being in January 1862 and the situation seemed sufficiently secure to set up the type but just at this time the artist held his first exhibition of oil paintings which proved so successful and diverting that the 'Facey Romford' illustrations were again postponed. Surtees in despair at last offered the book in August 1864 to The Field where is was refused. 1821003813London: R. Ackermann 1821. First edition. Contemporary Full Morocco. Very Good. 4to. 34 by 29 cm. vi 2 286 pp. Hand-colored title vignette and 48 hand-colored engraved plates. The plates capture the poetic beauty of the legendary lake region exquisitely. TEG. Moderate rubbing to contemporary red morocco along edges faint dampstain markings and a few other scuffs and other indicia of wear but still a very handsome binding. Dampstaining to the edges of the endpapers. Foxing of a few early leaves as well as the final ones. Faint dampstaining affecting the margins of perhaps a dozen plates and also visible in the fore-edge when the pages are fanned. 1817007975London: Henry Colburn 1817. First edition. Three Quarters Morocco. Marbled pastedown on boards. Near Fine. 4to. 30.5 by 27 cm. xviii 2 368 pp. 28 hand-colored aquatint plates of which one is a half-title page another is a double paged and folding panorama plate of The Battle of Waterloo; plus two folding maps. The plate count given in the book's plate description is 30 and this includes the maps. Tooley 336. Abbey Life 372. Cohn Cruikshank 580. Missing as typical View of Brussels but with "Flight of Bonaparte". Rouse was responsible for almost all of the plates with Cruikshank the artist for the large folding plate depicting the Battle of Waterloo and the frontis plate which contains portraits of the leading generals. Rouse though had a hand in the printing of these as well. Condition: Rubbing along the joints on the cover with a touch of rawness in the very upper reach of the front hinge but overall a highly attractive three quarter red morocco binding with raised bands gilt lettering and ruled and dotted decoration on the spine. Scattered light soiling within and the typical quotient of offsetting but mostly clean. The Cruikshank Waterloo plate has smudgy margins but a good amount of this can be removed with a simple eraser if one wishes to make the effort -- we did test this. The large folding map has fold tears with one irregularly bordered tear. The whole map we would note is present. Henry Colburn unknown
