First Spanish edition.<br /><br />A text that engaged the well-studied debates about the natural history of the Americas and Spain's colonial history. In 1780 in Venice Juan Nuix published Riflessioni imparziali supra l'umanita degli spagnuoli nell' Indie contro i pretersi filosofi e politici. Nuix a Catalan living in Italy since the expulsion of the Jesuits wrote the book to defend Spanish colonialism and historiography against the attacks of Robertson and Raynal. It sailed by the censors in the Council of the Indies and two separate translations appeared in succession one in 1782 edited by a member of the Royal Council Pedro Varela y Ulloa and another in 1783 by Joseph Nuix Juan's brother. The Spanish edition sponsored by the crown opened with an essay by Varela y Ulloa in which he first offered a searing Critique of traditional forms of colonialism not unlike that put forth by Raynal. After describing military campaigns in foreign lands from Alexander the Great to Genghis Kahn as butcheries Varela y Ulloa went on to claim that the Spanish colonialism was unique. The crimes attributed to Spain in the Indies had been committed by private individuals who did not represent the nation as a whole and who had acted as they did while surrounded by hungry cannibals. Moreover compared with the atrocities committed by other European colonial powers the actions of the Spaniards looked like misdemeanors. Varela y Ulloa's effort to portray Spanish colonialism as unique benign captured the essence of Nuix's thesis well. Nuix's defense of the record of Spanish colonialism opened with passages that sought to bolster his credibility by stressing that he was a Catalan and that Catalans had not really participated in the Spanish colonization of the Indies so that he could not be accused of being partisan. He then articulated a five-pronged defense of Castilian colonial behavior in America seeking to demonstrate the unreliability of the sources used by Robertson and Raynal and of their interpretations. Nuix First set out to prove that charges of Spanish cruelty to Amerindians were exaggerations originally put into circulation by writers such as Las Casas whose reports on the destruction of the Indies were at the root of most foreign criticisms of Spain. According to Nuix Las Casas was of Flemish origin which explained why he had sought to undermine Spain. Las Casas also often contradicted himself Nuix argued no impartial jury could trust such "an inept" witness. Foreign historians who had echoed Las Casas's allegations were not credible either not Robertson whose moderation had prompted him to dismiss Las Casas. Robertson had selected and reinterpreted the testimony of Spanish witnesses when recounting various colonial massacres. Instead of quoting them moreover Robertson had manipulated the testimony of witnesses to depict the Amerindians as passive victims of Spanish cruelty. History was not a matter of interpretation however but of faithfully presenting the testimony of witnesses and in that respect Robertson lacked credibility. In order to prove that Spaniards in America had not behaved like greedy barbarians Nuix argued that the alleged depopulation caused by the Conquest was the product of factors outside human control. The infantile susceptibility of the natives to disease for example was why epidemics had wiped them out. The barrenness of the Americas and the idleness of the originally small number of natives had moved the conquerors to create economies based on mining and large estates. Such economies along with the foreign monopoly on colonial trade not Spanish cruelty and greed Nuix contended were responsible for having slowed both markets and population growth.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Provenance: Book plate of Alberto Parreño formerly president of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce in New York to front paste down. A RARE publication in its own right Rare Book Hub notes last copy appearing in a dealer catalog in 1970. This copy rendered unique and historically significant by the original owner's addition of 78 blank pages which he mostly filled with pasted in contemporaneous newspaper clippings including 7 pp. of the Democratic Party Platform of 1856. Other significant clippings are headed: The Sanford Letter Wash. Aug. 21 1848 2 pp.; Kansas Affairs-Official Instructions to Gov. Geary and Gen. Smith Wash. Black buckram album 10" x 13" containing a one-page printed introduction by Preston and 60 gelatin silver prints by Waddell inserted into pre-cut corners rectos only each with a fairly detailed typed caption underneath. Very good condition. According to the Introduction Clyde Waddell was Chief Photographer for the Houston Press before entering the Army where he was attached to the Public Relations Staff of the Southeast Asia Command. After two busy years on documenting action on the Burma front Waddell took the photographs in this album while on leave in Calcutta. "By the time he completed this project which brought him into some of the remotest out-of-bounds areas" writes Preston "he was flooded with requests from Americans and Britishers for copies of his photographs. That is how this album came to be.As a documentary of Calcutta it's tops." The album includes wonderful views of the city and its people including many bustling street scenes buildings Hindustan Building Karnani Estates American Red Cross Burra Club Jain Temple Nimtolla Mosque the Stock Exchange billboards street vendors and performers among them a snake charmer and shops and markets--including a wonderful shot of American GIs browsing at a book stall. There are also scenes of poverty and struggle including striking tram workers homeless people sleeping in the streets an opium den and a woman dying on a sidewalk as people walk by indifferent to her plight. The captions are chatty offering both information and Waddell's personal commentary on the scenes. This particular copy of the album belonged to Lyle Oberwise 1908-1993. Like Waddell Oberwise was a an American Army photographer assigned to the China-Burma-India theater of operations. But he is better known as a prolific Milwaukee street photographer whose work was discovered only upon his death. More than 43000 slides he shot in Milwaukee between 1945 and 1993 now reside at the Milwaukee County Historical Society. There is a photo of Oberwise in his military uniform mounted on the verso of the title page of this album. This extraordinary love missive artfully illustrated given to John Lemson Flagg on his 24th birthday - one year before his marriage to Ellen H. Brown - is inscribed on the front free end paper: John L. Flagg/From N.B./11 of September 1859. The question is who was N.B. We would assume a lovelorn lady or a confidante of Mr. Flagg - the possibilities are endless. What we do know is - John L. Flagg was born on September 11 1835 and this manuscript was given to him on September 11th 1859 - a birthday present. Mr. Flagg went on to become a lawyer and mayor of Troy NY. This story told in seven captioned pen and ink drawings is the work of an accomplished amateur who displays their ingenious talent beginning with the title page; the lettering being created out of male and female figures and one horse. The narrative that follows is a time-honored tale of a woman's love that is unrequited: Mr. Jones writes to say he is coming our protagonist then practices Mr. Jones favorite songs makes his favorite pudding prepares a room and takes pains to look splendid. We next see our lady waiting patiently at the window followed by the last drawing and caption stating: Mr. Jones writes to say he can't come! - illustrated by a weeping crestfallen maiden left alone with a letter. 186111609Mexico City 1861. Manuscript. 10.50" x 8.25. Very Good. Single page letter by Mexican revolutionary and her first constitutionally elected President. Written on laid paper with horizontal fold lines. Loss of lower left corner of sheet not affecting any content. Lightly pencilled translation attempts by a prior owner above several words. The Juarez government had recaptured Mexico City on January 1 1861 and he was elected President in the month following this letter. His declaration of a 2-year suspension of interest payments on international debts related to the Mexican Revolution led to an invasion by the French in 1862. The Juarez government's initial defeat of this force at the Battle of Puebla on May 5 1862 is commemorated annually as Cinco de Mayo. The content of this letter has not been fully translated but discusses emigration into Mexico. The paper is embossed in upper left corner "Secretaria Particular del Presidente de la Republica" Private Secretary of the President of the Republic. Royal octavo 9¼x5½" in publisher's original green cloth spine lettered in gilt covers decorative blind stamped. First Edition.<br /><br />In 1825 Edward Belcher accompanied Frederick William Beechey's expedition to the Pacific and Bering Strait as a surveyor. In 1836. he commanded a surveying ship on the north and west coasts of Africa and in the British seas. Belcher took up the work which Beechey had left unfinished on the Pacific coast of South America. He was on board the bomb vessel HMS Sulphur which was ordered to return to England in 1839 by the Trans-Pacific route. Belcher made various observations at a number of islands which he visited having been delayed by being dispatched to take part in the war in China in 1840. On 26 January 1841 the then Commander Belcher landed on Possession Point at the north shore Hong Kong Island and made the first British survey of Hong Kong harbor. After the war's end in 1842 he reached home and for his services was made a Knight Bachelor in the following year. He was then engaged in HMS Samarang in surveying work in the East Indies the Philippines Geomun-do Port Hamilton and other places until 1847. In 1852 Belcher led the last and largest Admiralty expedition to rescue Sir John Franklin. He was also to look for his former surveying officer in Hong Kong Richard Collinson and Robert McClure whose ships had not been seen after entering the Bering Strait. He did a great deal of sledge exploration rescued McClure and abandoned four of his five ships in the ice. He had five ships: Assistance Belcher Resolute Henry Kellett second mate George Nares the steam tenders PioneerSherard Osborn and Intrepid Leopold McClintock and the depot ship North Star William Pullen. Belcher and one tender were to enter Wellington Channel where Franklin was thought to be while Kellett was to go west to Melville Island and look for Collinson and McClure. North Star was to stay at Beechey Island as a supply base. He left the Nore in April 1850. By early winter Assistanceand Pioneer were frozen in at Northumberland Sound to the north of Wellington Channel while Resolute and Intrepid were frozen in off Melville Island Arctic—the first ships this far west since William Edward Parry in 1819. A great deal of exploration was done by man-hauled sledges. In April 1853 Leopold McClintock and others left the Resolute on sledges and returned 105 days later having covered 1400 miles and discovered Prince Patrick Island. Another party went west and discovered Robert McClure whose ship was frozen in at Mercy Bay. Belcher went north by sledge and found a channel at the northern tip of Devon Island hinting that Franklin might have used it to escape to Baffin Bay. When the ice broke up that summer he pushed his ships up Wellington Channel and became trapped again. By February 1854 Belcher was becoming increasingly worried about the safety of his ships and men. In April he ordered Kellett to abandon his ships and return by sledge to North Star. Belcher abandoned his two ships in late July. Aided by two ships that showed up at Beechey Island Phoenix and Breadalbane the whole party returned to England. Belcher went through a court martial which was automatic for any captain who had lost a ship. He was exonerated but his sword was returned to him 'without observation'. He never again received an active command. Curiously Resolute broke free of the ice and drifted all the way to Davis Strait where it was picked up by an American whaler.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Some staining and wear to covers spines a bit faded ends chipped and worn rear joint of Vol. I with chipping and loss; hinges repaired at endpapers some light foxing and occasional mostly marginal damp staining within the three folding maps which should be loose in a pocket not present; overall good uncommon in the original cloth. For a time his patron was Cardinal Giulio de' Medici and he mocked Popes and would be popes but in time he settled in Venice - the Anti-Rome. Ariosto called him "the scourge of Princes". He is remembered most for his satires and his letters which detail conversations with both the great names of the day as well as regular folk both women and men. His ability to manipulate the reader of his letters - which were carefully chosen and probably always meant for publication - by constructing a compelling narrative with himself as central protagonist - changed epistolary collections forever. 20999Japan Hydrogen Industry Co Ltd. Onahama Fukushima Prefecture Japan 1947. Cloth album 12 x 8.5 inches containing 33 silver gelatin photographs mounted to rectos only with printed captions in English and Japanese on facing pages. Very good. In the aftermath of World War II the Allied powers recognized the importance of stabilizing the Japanese economy as part of a larger effort to prevent Japan's remilitarization and stave off the spread of communism. With the assistance of foreign aid the Japanese government invested heavily in strengthening its industrial and manufacturing capacity. Economic development efforts in the coal-producing region of Fukushima Prefecture centered on the construction of chemical factories and related infrastructure. The Japan Hydrogen Industry Company also known as Nihon Suiso Company which had been founded in the port city of Onahama in 1937 became the core of the industrialization effort in the region after the war. This album produced in 1947 was likely used in an effort to attract American investment. The company was involved in the gasification of pulverized coal producing-depending on the exact process-coal gas water gas or syngas all combustible gases used for municipal lighting and heating prior to the large-scale production of natural gas as well as the production of ammonium sulfate and methanol. The album shows the plant's coke room; gas generators compressors and storage tanks; carbon monoxide converters; pumps for moving chemicals in solution; centrifuges; acid cooling process; ammonium sulphate storage room; and several parts of the methyl alcohol plant boiler turbo generators distiller machine shop storage drums. There is also a view of the entire seaside factory and one of the company's business offices. Over the next few decades Fukushima Prefecture underwent significant industrial development and became Japan's largest energy-supplying region. Whether this album made a specific contribution to that growth by garnering investment we do not know. But it is an interesting artifact of the early stages of the recovery that would become known as the Japanese Economic Miracle. unknown books

Crimes of the Clergy is a collection of pamphlets he had written started in 1821- it was much condemned and no doubt destroyed as few copies seem to circulate. "In the 1870s and 1880s land ownership and border disputes broke out when valuable natural resources were discovered near the United States-Mexican border. The International Boundary Commission which set out in 1891 consisted of two main parties one from the U.S. and one from Mexico. John Whitney Barlow and Jacobo Blanco respectively U.S. and Mexican commissioners met at El Paso in February 1892 to begin the work. Their instructions were to resurvey the border line locate and rebuild the old monuments and install additional markers as necessary" Smithsonian. This album is the Spanish-language equivalent with the same plates of "Report of the Boundary Commission Upon the Survey and Re-Marking of the Boundary Between the United States and Mexico West of the Rio Grande 1891-1896: Album" published by the U.S. Government Printing Office in 1899. As a young lieutenant he had made a proposal to the Colonial Office to mount an expedition to the north-west coast of Australia for the purposes of establishing a settlement there for starving Irish peasants. His plans were approved and he sailed for Australia in the Beagle in 1837. He wen on to mount two expedition in the north-west in 1838 and 1839 which yielded particularly important geographical discoveries: "His expeditions were the first to examine the previously ignored north-west interior of the continent and he discovered much useful territory. Marchand writes that he produced the book "a la sollicitation de quelques amis qui ont cru que le troisième jubile ou la troisième année séculaire de l'imprimerie reveilleroit infailliblement la curiosité du publique touchant l'origine de ce bel art at the request of some friends who believed that the third jubilee or the tercentenary of printing would infallibly wake the public curiosity concerning the origin of this beautiful art." The allegorical frontspiece by J.V. Schley show Minerva and Mercury descending from Heaven granting the gift of printing to Germany who in turn gives it to England Holland France and Italy. Very Good. 4 232 pp. Title in red and black with etched royal cypher. 120 copper engraved commemorative medals by Adriaen Schoonebeeck. Added engraved title page signed by Romeyn de Hooghe dated 1691. 12 full-page etchings signed by de Hooghe that depict festival constructions for Williams entry into The Hague in 1691 and also portraits of William and Mary among other emblems. Engraved headpiece and initial decoration on dedication leaf signed by Schoonebeck followed by full-page engraved leaf honoring Chevalier with depictions of Atlas Aristotle and other muses. Full contemporary vellum blind-stamped with central lozenge design; very slight foxing or staining engravings fresh; covers slightly bowed. Initialled bookplate P.M.G to front pastedown. First Edition in French of this biography of William III of England extensively illustrated to show important events in the monarchs life. This work was privately printed for Nicolas Chevalier who was a hobbyist and coin collector. A large proportion of Dutch print-making at the end of the 17th century focused on William III. An almost categorical personality cult surrounded the stadtholder-king. Among the print-makers Romeyn de Hooghe 1645-1708 was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. He is best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. De Hooghes 12 etchings of triumphal arches for this work are adaptations of plates in the works by Bidloo and Tronchin de Breuil published in 1691 and 1692. Adriaen Schoonebeek c. 1657- 1705 is often mentioned because of his appearance as witness for the prosecution in a court case against de Hooghe that formed the climax of a slanderous exchange of pamphets between Orangists and members of the Amsterdam faction in 1690. These animosities did not prevent re- employment of both engravers in executing plates for this Nicolas Chevaliers 1692 illustrated volume on numismatics and the life of King William. Rare.
