Survey of the watershed of the Canadian River and Red Fork of the Arkansas River in Indian Territory extending from Fort Smith to the border with Texas. The lands of the Cherokee Creek Seminole and Choctaw Indians are located. The map locates numerous forts including Smith Coffee Gibson and Old Fort Holmes and their connecting wagon roads. Talasee is shown at the site of Tulsa. This map was issued with the "Northern and Western Boundary Line of the Creek Country" report by Sitgreaves and Lt. J.C. Woodruff. The surveys were made in 1848 and 1850 but the report in which the map was issued wasn't published until 1858. After the conquest of New Mexico and California it was apparent that transportation and communications needed to be improved between these new territories and the rest of the United States east of the Mississippi. Geographical knowledge of most of this area particularly northwestern New Mexico now northern Arizona was very limited and inaccurate. Some maps of the day showed a river system that might provide a possible navigable water corridor between New Mexico and the Gulf of California via the Zuni Little Colorado and Colorado Rivers. In September of 1851 Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves along with a small crew of topographers naturalists artists and support personnel and an escort of 30 infantrymen left the Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico by pack train with instructions to explore and map the Zuni and Colorado Rivers and evaluate their navigability in light of a possible impending war with the Mormons in Utah. They traveled southwest along the Zuni River to its mouth and then headed northwest along the Little Colorado intending to follow it to the Colorado. When they reached Grand Falls northwest of present-day Winslow Arizona their guide Antoine Leroux advised them that it was unwise to follow the river any further because it flowed in a deep canyon for the rest of its course and emptied into the great canyon of the Colorado River. They left the river and struck off due west around the north side of the San Francisco Mountains discovering the Wupatki Indian Ruins along the way and looped southwestward around the south side of Bill Williams Mountain. The rest of their westward march followed near the future alignment of Route 66 to the Colorado River near the modern town of Bullhead City Arizona. After a difficult march south along the Colorado River they reached Camp Yuma on November 30. Of course Sitgreaves discovered that the Zuni and Little Colorado Rivers were not at all navigable and would be useless to transport troops and supplies. The Colorado River however was found to be navigable along the entire distance that he explored. Sitgreaves' official report "Report of an Expedition Down the Zuni and Colorado Rivers in 1851" was published in 1853. Manuscript notebook of a Greenwich Village woman documenting her reading study and travels

18992984New York 1899. Soft-bound sheep over card with rubbing to extremities and some loss to spine. Ownership signature to third blank: "Elizabeth B. Williams. 34 West 17th Street. January 1st 1877." Comprised of 32 handwritten pages providing a glimpse into the bohemian life of an educated woman living in New York at the turn of the century. By the time of this notebook's use New York's Greenwich Village had gained a reputation as a haven for artists writers and musicians to live and gather. Boarding houses and bachelor flats like the well-known Benedick Building made the Village an affordable place even for single people to find housing that was safe and affordable. The brownstone building that Elizabeth lists as hers in the ownership signature in fact still exists allowing us to image the space in which this manuscript was used. While we've been unable to locate information on Elizabeth's history the pages here reveal her to be a woman interested in history reading and music. 13 pages focus on a range of historical facts -- including historical timelines of the Hebrews lists of British monarchs and American presidents notes on the genres of authors from the Renaissance to Romantic period and the history of landmarks in London. 4 pages with her hand notably sloppier as if writing while working make notes on musical scales and techniques for effective fingering while playing. And 9 pages reveal that for a number of years Elizabeth was involved in a Book Club as she keeps track of her reading lists for meetings by month and year including Harriet Beecher Stowe Annie Fields and Edna Lyall as well as books on Victorian Literature Social Life in Old Virginia and histories of England and Korea -- 64 titles in all. Elizabeth's life was not confined to New York however. She dedicates 2 pages for example to a packing list for a voyage detailing the clothes she'll need in her trunk. Another 3 pages list addresses for friends in New York New Jersey Ohio and Illinois to whom she'll send letters while away. Within these pages exist opportunities for researchers to explore genealogy practices of self-education through reading book clubs and reading habits lifestyles of women living in New York at the turn of the century musical practice and paleography. unknown books

There are only meager biographical data about Pablo de la PurÃsima ConcepciÃ³n Beaumont whose work is a major source on MichoacÃ¡n. Despite its title "Chronicle of the Holy Apostles St Peter and St Paul of MichoacÃ¡n" Beaumont's work in fact spans a much greater area including much of western Mexico northward to New Mexico and tending toward a general history. It provides details to 1565. Beaumont divided his total work into tow major parts the firs or Aparato intended to be introductory to the second or the CrÃ³nica proper. the first seems complete but the second was never finished. The Aparato takes up fully a third of the extant Beaumont work although nominally introductory. It deals with the discovery of America and the conquest of Mexico to the year 1521. It was twice published before appearance of the total work. Far more valuable is the CrÃ³nica. It consists of two books and one chapter of book 3. Beaumont drew on a wide variety of sources. He tell us us that he gathered a large quantity of manuscripts from various Franciscan archives as well as listing 30 standard writers in printed sources. He gives full copies of some of his documents of which several have since disappeared. He speaks of obtaining a native painting possibly from which his illustrations came. These paintings show incidents of the first visits of Spaniards to MichoacÃ¡n there reception by Tarascans labors of the Franciscans coats of arms of principal cities of MichoacÃ¡n. It is usually through that Beaumont composed his work around 1777. That is the last date in the later copies of the original manuscript. Unfortunately his original manuscript is lost. It was copied in Mexico City around 1792 to for volumes 7-11 of a 32 volume Collection of Memories on New Spain ordered by Viceroy Conde de Revilla Gigedo and compiled by Manuel de la Vega. Three partially complete sets of these Vega Memorias are known; from one or another of them come other recopied manuscript copies as well as the printed versions. Editions of the work have a somewhat unfortunate publishing history. In 1826 Bustamante published an incomplete and useless edition of the Aparato attributing it to Vega who had owned the manuscript Bustamante used. In 1873-74 a five volume edition of both Aparato and CrÃ³nica appeared in Mexico; it lacks the Indian drawings and was based on a secondary manuscript copy made b y J F Ramirez that then belonged to Alfredo Chavero. A three volume version was published by the National Archives of Mexico in 1932 based on their copy of the 1792 collection of Memorias; it contains the Indian drawings and an introduction by Rafael Lopez. The text seems slightly corrupt but it may be near the original as Beaumont said his Spanish was defective owing to his Parisian rearing. George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in. Condition: Some underlining in pencil through out by Foster. In 1844 Emory served in an expedition that produced a new map of Texan claims westward to the Rio Grande. He came to public attention as the author of the Notes of a Military Reconnaissance from Fort Leavenworth in Missouri to San Diego California published by the Thirtieth United States Congress in 1848. This report described terrain and rivers cities and forts and made observations about Indians Mexicans primarily in New Mexico Territory Arizona Territory and Southern California. It was and is considered one of the important chronicles and descriptions of the historic Southwest particularly noted for its maps. Emory was a reliable and conscientious cartographer. There is a story of testament as to Emory's dedication to accuracy that says John Bartlett his supervisor in the Corps of Topographical Engineers made him sign off on a misplaced boundary marker creating a sweet revenge for Emory who replaced him as Head of the International Boundary Commission in 1855. So accurate were his maps that when topographical engineers were surveying possible routes for the transcontinental railroad the most Southern route did not need to be surveyed thanks to the outstanding work by William H. Emory. But William H. Emory did more than just map the terrain; he also made notes about the plant life as well as the people who inhabited the sparsely populated southwest. Notating the social relations of some of the Native American people he wrote: "Women when captured are taken as wives by those who capture them but they are treated by the Indian wives of the capturers as slaves and made to carry wood and water; if they chance to be pretty or receive too much attention from their lords and masters they are in the absence of the latter unmercifully beaten and otherwise maltreated. The most unfortunate thing which can befall a captive woman is to be claimed by two persons. In this case she is either shot or delivered up for indiscriminate violence.
