Collection includes 17 separate documents all of which reference this court case regarding the petitioner Alexander Peacock an insolvent debtor from Oyster Bay Queens County Long Island NY; appearing before Cary F. Dunn Jr. first judge of the court of common pleas County of Queens; Peacock was ".conforming himself to the directions of the act entitled 'An act for the benefit of insolvent debtors and their creditors'."; the first document partially printed titled No. 1 Petition has been notarized with the blindstamp at top of E. Ely Notary and is addressed to Judge Dunn; the next is the proof of residence deposed and signed by John B. Hicks & the judge; the following is an Account of Creditors a long list of over 30 names and including individuals living in New York Philadelphia and New Jersey the debts amounting to $ 5468.00; next is an accounting of the 6 suits and judgements brought against Mr. Peacock including that of Joseph C. Hornblower of Newark NJ James King and Archibald McKellar of the City of New York and others; the next document is an inventory of the estate of Peacock with a list of 15 people who have notes outstanding owed to him including Benjamin Smith Gilbert Robertson & Co. David R. Floyd Jones Luther Hildreth a Mr. Sibbsone of England Capt. Jones of the United States Vessel Revenge and Louis Jones a Colored man totalling $ 5647.62 - the back of this sheet gives a list of the "Body Clothing Beds & Bedding." Peacock being fairly well-dressed and provided for; other documents here include the Oath certifying the amounts owed; a certification of copies of the documents by James Fairlie Clerk of the Supreme Court; a legal agreement & acknowledgment from Peacock to meet with creditors at the house of Joseph Roe innkeeper in the Village of Jamaica; also is the "Order for Advertisement" document signed by Judge Dunn requesting that the notice of the meeting be published ".in the paper printed by the printer to the State and in the Columbian and Long island Star for six weeks successively requiring his creditors to appear before me at the House of Joseph Roe."; attached here are the printed papers completed in manuscript attesting to the publication of the notice to publicize by the judge from Charles Holt printer of the Columbian and counter-signed by James Campbell Master in Chancery and tipped-on is a printed copy of the actual advertisement as it appeared in the newspaper; with a similar notice from Solomon Allen printer of the Albany Register another from Alden Spooner printer of the Long Island Star both of these also with their samples of notice tipped-on; with a notice signed by the judge assigning all of Peacock's properties excepting his bedding & clothing to his creditors; and an attesting witness of the judge's assignment signed by Edward Parker; with a certifying document with original seals of Peacock's main creditors receiving conveyance of his estate as assignees in satisfaction of the debts signed by Edward Parker John B. Hicks and Christian Truss as witnesses signed & sealed by Wm. Wright David Findlay and Wm. Crow with the verso attested to by the judge; with a notice of oath-taking of Wright & Findlay to uphold the decision of the court; and a similar oath by Wm. Crow and signed by Judge Dunn; each page is signed by Alexander Peacock; originally these were all sealed or adhered to each other at the top of the sheets to make one continuous 'case' of materials - some of the old glue has given way and now there is separation of the pages; varying sizes from 6 3/4" x 8" to 8 1/2" x 13 1/2" size sheets; most of the paper of very good quality chain-laid some with the paper makers' watermark; some edge tips wear and chipping to edges some darkening and old fold lines; in very good condition overall and a collection offering a glimpse of the process for relieving debt in this case substantial especially useful for outlining the entire process under the law in the early days of the American Republic; interesting legal history documentation. Noteworthy individuals mentioned in this case are: Joseph Coerten Hornblower 1777 - 1864 American lawyer and jurist from Belleville New Jersey Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court; Alden Spooner 1783-1848 who ".has the distinction of being a printer in two Long Island towns Sag Harbor and Brooklyn. It was natural that he chose to be a printer as his father Judah Paddock Spooner was the pioneer printer of Vermont and his uncle Timothy Green was a printer in New London Connecticut." Spooner also started Brooklyn's first daily newspaper Doggett Long Island Printing; Judge Carey Dunn Jr. Revolutionary War veteran; Commodore Jacob Nicholas Jones 1768 - 1850 officer in the United States Navy during the Quasi-War with France the First Barbary War and the Second Barbary War and the War of 1812. 182937520Stockholm 1829. Blue paper-covered boards originally with leather spines leather almost completely worn away; handwritten titles with dates pasted to front covers. Boards separated on 4 volumes and in some volumes leaves are gathered and tied with ribbon but are loose inside notebook; some ties are broken. Some light foxing mostly on end papers each volume. Script is slightly faded but legible in all volumes. Library discard stamp on versos of covers of Vols. A and 8 and on ffep of Vol. 4. Overall a Good set. 7 notebooks: numbered 2 - 6 8 & 'A'. Each volume with index except for No. 6: "Alterations on the Tariff Duties on Exports 1820 to 1824". 10-1 4" x 9" except Vol. 2: 9-1 2" x 7-1 2". When Jean Bernadotte was crowned Charles XIV King of Sweden and Norway in 1818 he began to introduce the ecomomic policies that would revitalize the country and move it towards industrialization. His government encouraged free enterprise and industrialized manufacturing which soon helped to establish Sweden as a more powerful trade partner for major European countries and especially Great Britain. Sweden already had a complicated customs system in place that charged major levies on foreign trade. Charles XIV improved and promoted the tariff system soon paid off all foreign debt increased the national revenue and greatly enriched his government. His next step was to develop a policy of peace abroad and beneficial diplomatic relations with Sweden’s trade partners. Benjamin Bloomfield 1st Baron Bloomfield was England’s answer to blunt the edge of Sweden’s aggressive customs policies. Named by his friend and confidant the Prince Regent as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Bernadotte Lord Bloomfield arrived in Stockholm in 1823. He apparently used these notebooks as a reference as he and his legation took steps to influence the customs process to England’s advantage. As he took up his official duties in Stockholm Lord Bloomfield encountered a wilderness of commercial negotiations that interrupted and particularly discouraged the trade of British manufactured goods for Sweden’s valued bar iron Baltic timber and oats. Fortunately King Charles XIV appreciated the manners and conversation of a foreign minister who had spent the best part of his life at the center of a brilliant court. In no time Lord Bloomfield’s work seemed to consist chiefly of feasting dancing and drinking champagne. He and Bernadotte became friends cementing the harmony of the two nations and as Lord Bloomfield hinted at the justice of rescinding the harder regulations he began to establish a freer and more favorable importation system. The delighted King George IV noted that Lord Bloomfield’s patriotism was unbounded. George Canning the brilliant politician and orator was Britain’s head of the Foreign Office at the time of Lord Bloomfield’s mission to Sweden. Lord Bloomfield’s dispatches of which these notebooks were a part were directed and addressed to him and his officers and it was his liberal polices that Lord Bloomfield carried out. Most volumes contain columns of individual commodities and their tariffs printed in Swedish with the same commodities amounts traded in import and export and their costs handwritten in English translation on opposite pages. The ordinances and proclamations are handwritten in English. There are no official court seals but spaces are left for them. Although at this time the Swedish government was working toward a declaration against slave trafficking the slave trade was still flourishing in the Caribbean. King George Lord Canning and Lord Bloomfield were determined to create an alliance between their countries for the suppression of the slave trade.These lists do not mention slaves as a commodity but laid in to the volume lettered A is a proclamation regulating slave trading in Saint-Barthelemy a Swedish-owned island with a thriving duty-free port. The listed commodities vary from volume to volume and reveal the vast quantity of goods in almost all cases traveling between countries by ship: a single page from one notebook includes tariffs for arrack brandy coffee glass rum wood spars staves woven goods ribbons of silk and velvet cinnamon cardamom currants fennel seeds almonds vanilla liquorice ginger cloves pepper porcelain tea oranges agates alabaster feathers tiles and bricks furs and hides cannon and gun stocks. No. 5: On Exports of Sweden to Foreign Parts published the 22 December 1818 and continued in force to the year 1824 inclusive. No. 6: Alterations in the Tariff Duties on Exports 1820 to 1824. No. 8: Imports or exports of Sweden published the 16 March 1826 and acted upon at and from the 1st June said year and now in force with the exceptions stated in the Ordinances of 13 December 1826 and 29 Dec.r 1827. Alterations in the Tariff of Duties of Customs for 1827-1828; Dues Levied under the Title of Convoy Duty; Treaty Between Sweden and Russia in which the Rate of Duty to be paid on the Commerce between Sweden and Finland is stated; Proclamations regulating the trade of St. Bartholemew sic; Containing No.9 10 11 12 13 & 14. 12 missing; presumably the Treaty Between Sweden and Russia which is not present. He was educated at Eton and at St John's College Oxford. Leaving the university without taking a degree he took up residence at Lincolns Inn in 1737. Four years later he married and went to live at his country seat of Whitminster Gloucestershire. In 1751 he removed to Twickenham where he enjoyed the society of many notable persons. Horace Walpole in his letters makes many jesting allusions to Cambridge in the character of news-monger. His chief work is the Scribleriad 1751 a mock epic poem the hero of which is the Martinus Scriblerus of Alexander Pope John Arbuthnot and Jonathan Swift. The poem is preceded by a dissertation on the mock heroic in which he avows Cervantes as his master. The satire shows considerable learning and was eagerly read by literary people; but it never became popular and the allusions always obscure have little interest for the present-day reader. He made a valuable contribution to history in his Account of the War in India on the Coast of Coromandel from the year 1750 to 1760 1761. He had intended to write a history of the rise and progress of British power in India but this enterprise went no further than this one work as he found that Robert Orme who had promised him the use of his papers contemplated the execution of a similar plan. The Works of Richard Owen Cambridge includes several pieces never before published. It contains an Account of his Life and Characterby his Son George Owen Cambridge 1803 the Scribleriad some narrative and satirical poems and about twenty papers originally published in Edward Moore's paper The World. His poems are included in Alexander Chalmers' English Poets 1816. Condition: Previous owner's name in neatly written dated 1806 on front end paper with his book plate on front past down with his library stamp. Lacks rear free end paper. Front hinge separated back hinge cracked. Lacks the Mongol on horse back plate map of Maratta County view of the attack on Geriah and view of Surat. Complied by John Kent principally from Campbell's Lives of the Admirals Hill page 358 First Dublin edition. First published in London in 1776-1777. A London man of letters Campbell was quite successful with his numerous works of an historical and biographical nature. He collect a large and valuable library. He first published his Lives of the Admirals in four volumes in the years 1742 to 1744. There were several later editions. From 1744 to 1748 he compiled and published what became known as Campbell's enlarged edition of John Harris's Complete collection of voyages and travels originally published in 1702-1705. Campbell also made numerous important contributions to the Biographia Britannica under the signatures E and X including his own noble Scottish ancestors the Campbells. A memoir of him was inserted by Andrew Kippis in this same work. Campbell was an expert on the histories of Spain Portugal France and the British and the Dutch. In 1765he was appointed the royal agent for the province of Georgia and held that office until his death. There are many interesting references to him in James Boswell's Life of Johnson. John Kent published only tow editions of his compilation; this one and one published in London in 1776-1777. Condition: New spines with original leather boards. Volume one closed page edge tears with occasional page edges chipped only affecting margins. volume two damp stain to title gutter some occasional foxing. First English edition.Bernal DÃ¯az del Castillo was a conquistador who wrote an eyewitness account of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards under Hernan Cortes himself serving as a rodelero under Cortes. Born in Medina del Campo Spain he came from a family of little wealth and he himself had received only a minimal education. He sailed to Cuba in 1514 to make his fortune but after two years found few opportunities there. Much of the native population of the island had already been killed by epidemics and forced labor and in 1517 an expedition was sent to the smaller Caribbean islands to find alternative sources of labor. DÃ¯az joined this group under the command of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. It was a difficult venture and although they discovered the Yucatan coast by the time the expedition returned to Cuba they were in disastrous shape. Nevertheless DÃ¯az returned to the coast of Yucatan the following year on an expedition led by Juan de Grijalva with the intent of exploring the newly discovered lands. Upon returning to Cuba he enlisted in a new expedition this one led by Hernan Cortes. In this third effort DÃ¯az took part in one of the legendary military campaigns of history bringing an end to the Aztec empire in Mesoamerica. During this campaign DÃ¯az spoke frequently with his companions in arms about their experiences collecting them into a coherent narration. The book that resulted from this was Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva Espana English: The True History of the Conquest of New Spain. In it he describes many of the 119 battles in which he claims to have participated culminating in the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521.As a reward for his service DÃ¯az was appointed governor of Santiago de los Caballeros present-day Antigua Guatemala. He began writing his history in 1568 almost fifty years after the events described in response to an alternative history written by Cortes's chaplain who had not actually participated in the campaign. He called his book the Verdadera Historia True History in response to the claims made in the earlier work. DÃ¯az died in 1585 without seeing his book published. A manuscript was found in a Madrid library in 1632 and finally published providing an eye-witness account of the events often told from the perspective of a common soldier. Today it is one of the most important sources in understanding the campaign that led to the collapse of the Aztec Empire and the Spanish conquest of Mexico.Condition:Spine renewed with new period spine label and original boards which the corners and edges are heavily rubbed some foxing to early pages. Polemical attack on the state of the French university system written in March 1871 two months after the end of the disastrous for the French Franco-Prussian War. As Pasteur argues whereas in Germany universities proliferated across the country France "stymied by revolution was always occupied with the sterile search for a better form of government giving only distracted attention to her institutions of higher learning" p. 9 our translation. At the root of all this was the regime of Napoleon I who in the early years of the 19th century neglected the country's twenty-eight extant institutions of higher learning in favor of his UniversitÃ© de France a disastrously centralized state-run institution that he established in 1808. The University suffered greatly during the Restoration and with it the quality of education so that by 1868 only Â£8000 were being spent for "true academic purposes" across the country cf. W. Chandler Roberts et al "Journal of the Society for Arts Vol. 32 no. 1655 August 8 1884 p. 905 creating a lacuna of learned and innovative thinkers to match Germany's. Perhaps in order to combat this downward trend Pasteur later founded the Pasteur Institute in 1887 serving as its director until his death in 1895. This appears to be the only separate appearance of Pasteur's tract published abroad and distributed to various foreign leading scientific figures among these "Darwin's Bulldog" Thomas Henry Huxley who makes mention of this work in an address delivered in October of that same year. The essay appeared again in print in 1947 following an even more disastrous encounter with Germany in a collection titled "Pour l'Avenir de la Science FranÃ§aise." This publication quite scarce with four physical copies noted in OCLC as of February 2020. COPAC adds one copy at the LEC Library UK. Forzani et C. unknown books
