Hill 907 & 816 Fourth edition.<br /><br />In 1783 the East India Company packet the Antelope out of Macao was shipwrecked on the Pelew islands now Pelau or Belau in the western Carolines in Micronesia. All the crew were saved and were the first Europeans to make contact with these islanders. They were lucky in that there was a Malay there shipwrecked the year before who was able to act as interpreter. Captain Henry Wilson and his crew developed unusually amicable relations with the Palauan inhabitants and participated in expeditions against their enemies. They were able to recover a great deal from the wreck and to build a new vessel with which they sailed to Macau after a stay of just over three months. They took with them Lee Boo who became a figure of fashionable interest in London. Using extensive interviews with Captain Wilson and other participants including Lee Boo George Keate wrote "An Account of the Pelew Islands". This work is distinctive in its account of the encounter between two cultures for its anthropologically-minded account of Palauan culture and society and as one of the fullest 18th-century accounts of a Pacific society. <br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Large folding map in need of repair but complete. Inscribed and signed by the author in pencil on front free endpaper to former Governor of Michigan Chase S. Osborn with his ex libris inside upper cover and three extensive initialed pencil annotations to early leaves of text. Contemporary account of the American steel strike organized by the Amalgamated Association of Iron Steel and Tin Workers in September 1919 in the wake of the end of World War I in an effort to reorganize the industry though the strike ended unsuccessfully in January 1920. This a significant association copy of the former Republican governor of Michigan 1911-1913 who noted in pencil on p. 17 in response to the massive U.S. Steel Corporation's surplus at the end of 1919: "Thou must not tread on the sensitive toes of dollars; rather on the hearts of men" adding on the following page "rather on the bleeding hearts of mankind." Previous to his political activities Osborn travelled widely discovering iron mines in both Canada and Madagascar; for this one of his memoirs was titled "The Iron-Hunter." Mary Heaton Vorse was herself a radical novelist journalist and editor of "The Masses" and while her relationship with Osborn is unclear we find reference to a few pieces of correspondence dated between 1913 and 1920 in the Mary Heaton Vorse Papers at Wayne University. 173814194Amsterdam: Herman Uytwerf 1738. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Two volumes pp. xiv 370 6; 430 6 with six folding plates and a folding map. Modern full-leather with marbled endpapers. Title pages clipped at upper and lower edges; damage with losses to three plates repairs to back of map; all else very good. Le Beau was transported from France to Quebec in 1729 probably on a charge of libertinism. According to his own account he was appointed a clerk in the Beaver Office and then chief clerk in the King's warehouses. Bored and depressed he stole gunpowder from the warehouses and set off for New England. A warrant for his arrest was issued but he escaped encountering many perils natural and human before he reached Boston and eventually sailed for Holland. His ensuing work on his adventures in North America includes much detail on Huron Iroquois and Algonquin customs but its style has been dubbed fanciful. Howes L-167 describes the work as "a basically veracious narrative from competent authorities though somewhat romanticised." The Dictionary of Canadian Biography argues that Le Beau "deserves credit for painting an exact picture of the customs and character of the Canadians" noting that "the best chapters are those that discuss the habits of beaver and the religious ideas of the Indians." Paper foxed and lightly brown throughout otherwise is good condition. Bound in contemporary calf over wooden boards clasps missing; rebacked. Originally published in Dordrecht in 1660 this is the Second American edition based on the edition printed in Ephrata in 1748 which is rarely found in the trade. The title translates in part "The Bloody Theater or Martyrs' Mirror of the Defenseless Christians . . . Who suffered and Died for the Testimony of Jesus. . . from the time of Christ to the Year A. D. 1660." It was compiled by Thieleman Braght from chronicles memorials testimonies recording the history of martyrdom with particular emphasis on the persecution of the Mennonite communities in Germany and northern Europe. "Joseph Ehrenfried 1783-1862 was printer publisher and translator. Born in Germany he worked first in the city of Lancaster then Harrisburg and Allentown and then back to Lancaster. Known best for his newspaper work for a time he was the 'German state printer' meaning he was the official German-language printer for the state of Pennsylvania." A note found in the blog The Black Art by Lee J. Stoltzfus suggests that Ehrenfried went out of business as a result of the cost associated with the publication of this gigantic printing venture. 16390An early turn of the century Wellesley College student"s hand decorated fan with over 150 photographic or printed image pasted on including her Ivy league friends and many other university logos. One side of fan has 66 small black and white cutout photographs that show her college friends and other images during her Wellesley years. The reverse of the fan has another 84 small color print and gild paper logos and badges these 84 small ephemera are mostly from colleges and social clubs in New England and the US Northeast but includes some from across America. Among many others it includes logos from Wellesley College Worcester Polytechnic Institute Stanford University and Cark University. The fan when open measures about 10.5 in x 19 in. Fan is in very good condition with fabric lightly soiled at edges. Scarce item since woman college education was just taking off at the turn of the century. Minor wear on wooden handle and fan. The present memoir includes McPherson's supposed kidnapping in Mexico an event heavily called into question by contemporary media who conjectured that McPherson and her lover had cooked up the story to cover up their liaison. Extensive and rather rambling unsigned letter or lyceum address draft "To the President" though which President and of what is not stated in which the author quite possibly a public figure based on references to his "detractors" strongly argues against women's suffrage: "would we have our females eschewing their more gentle nature hardening the finer sensibilities of her mind by rushing to the ballot box And mingling in the excitement of an election thereby throwing off the garb of female modesty and timidity I think not." Though the first leaf has the appearance of a clean copy the author's hand begins to turn sloppy with a number of manuscript corrections in the later leaves. Due to a lack of contemporary references Mary Wollstonecraft is the only person explicitly mentioned we cannot place with certainty a date or author for the item though the hand ink and paper and reference to women tending to wounded soldiers during wartime indicate this was penned within a few years of the Civil War as the women's suffrage movement was beginning to gather steam in the 1870s. unknown books

Stitching loosening but holdng. Includes "An Act to Establish the University of Texas approved on February 11 1858 which set aside $100000 in United States bonds toward construction of the state's first publicly funded university. Also acts relating to the incorporation and relief of several different railroads; creating the counties of Archer Mason Menard Zapata Hardin Hamilton Kimble and Buchanan; and "An Act to permit free persons of African descent to select their own master and become slaves" approved on January 27 1858. Similar acts allowing for voluntary enslavement were passed in Florida and Tennessee the same year. Also noteworthy is a 43-page act supplementing and amending the Texas Penal Code that had been established in 1856 which provides an extensive list of criminal offenses and their statutory punishments including those for unlawful i.e mixed race marriage and a number of slavery-related offense. These are divided into those committed by whites inciting insurrection illegal transportation of slaves stealing or enticing a slave harboring runaways conducting business with slaves undue cruelty to and torture of slaves and those committed by slaves or free persons of color. This work was first published by Abbot 1562-1633 in 1599 and was reprinted several times over the next 50 years. Abbot was a notable educator and writer in his time but is best known for being an Archbishop of Canterbury. Abbot provides brief descriptions of Africa Europe and Asia but he also devotes over 80 pages on a discussion of the New World including both North and South America. He even provides a short discussion of the North and South Poles. Interestingly in the margin of page 157 is a manuscript note in an old hand describing Egyptian Pyramids.</p> Printed for Will.
