188622219New York: Great American Tea Company 1886. Near fine. Original chromolithograph advertising poster 22 x 32 inches. A stunning print with exceptionally rich color archivally backed. Professional restoration to edges and a few small spots on the printed area. Near fine. "Ten minutes for refreshments!" was the well-known cry of railroad conductors across the United States before dining cars became common on trains. Hungry and thirsty passengers would rush off the train and into the depot where they scrambled to order and then bolt down their lunch under the watchful eye of conductor determined to keep the train on schedule. In this advertising print for the Great American Tea Company the conductor stands in the doorway with pocket watch in hand calming observing the chaos as customers all white men served by Black waiters frantically consume their food and beverages some leaving smashed crockery in their wake as they rush to re-board the train. Coffee is dispensed from urns advertising the company's Sultana Coffee and its baking powder and a giant sign on the wall reads "The Teas & Coffee used in this establishment are from the Great American Tea Co." Founded in New York City in 1859 the Great American Tea Company made its name using a direct-to-consumer sales approach that enabled them to offer quality tea at lower prices than found in retail shops. After a period of success selling mail-order to clubs they began opening their own storefronts which were sumptuously decorated in a Chinese-inspired style. In 1870 the company was renamed The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company better known today as A&P in honor of the newly completed transcontinental railroad but retained the Great American Tea Company name on its products thus the appearance of the older name in this 1886 print. The company was a major force in American advertising in the late 19th century using periodicals circulars trade cards and premiums to spread their name. This scarce poster is one of the finest examples of their effective and popular campaigns. Great American Tea Company unknown

Rebacked in the 19th century leather retaining the original spine with raised bands and gilt decorative stamping and lettering to spine. Translated from the original Portuguese manuscripts by Jackim le Grande. First edition.

Born in Lisbon he entered the Order of Jesus at the age of sixteen. In 1621 he was ordered as a missionary to India and in 1622 he arrived at Goa. With the intention of proceeding to Abyssinia whose Negus emperor Segued had been converted to Roman Catholicism by Pedro Páez he left India in 1624. He disembarked on the coast of Mombasa and attempted to reach his destination through the Galla country but was forced to return. In 1625 he set out again accompanied by Mendez the patriarch of Ethiopia and eight missionaries. The party landed on the coast of the Red Sea and Lobo settled in Abyssinia as superintendent of the missions in Tigre. He remained there until death deprived the Catholics of their protector the emperor Segued. Forced by persecution to leave the kingdom in 1634 Lobo and his companions fell into the hands of the Turks at Massawa who sent him to India to procure a ransom for his imprisoned fellow-missionaries. In this he was successful but could not induce the Portuguese viceroy to send an armament against Abyssinia. Intent upon accomplishing this cherished project he embarked for Portugal and after he had been shipwrecked on the coast of Natal and captured by pirates arrived at Lisbon. Neither at this city however nor at Madrid and Rome was any countenance given to Lobo's plan. He accordingly returned to India in 1640 and was elected rector and afterwards provincial of the Jesuits at Goa. After some years he returned to his native city and died there January 29 1678.

Lobo wrote an account of his travels in Portuguese which appears never to have been printed but is deposited in the monastery of St. Roque Lisbon. Balthazar Telles made large use of the information therein in his Historia geral da Ethiopia a Alta Coimbra 1660 often erroneously attributed to Lobo see Machado's Bibliotheca Lusitana. Lobo's own narrative was translated from a manuscript copy into French in 1728 by the Abbe Joachim le Grand under the title of Voyage historique d'Abissinie. In 1669 a translation by Sir Peter Wyche of several passages from a manuscript account of Lobo's travels was published by the Royal Society translated in Melchisédech ThévenotRelation des voyages in 1673. An English abridgment of Le Grand's edition by Dr. Johnson was published in 1735 reprinted 1789. In a Mémoire justificatif en réhabilitation des pères. Pierre Paëz et Jérôme Lobo Dr. C. T. Beke maintains against Bruce the accuracy of Lobo's statements as to the source of the Abai branch of the Nile. See A. de Backer Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus edited by C. See for this stamp the French database 'marquesdecollections' stamp no. L.1090. Condition: Mosts lithos are in rather good condition. The plates have evidently been used a few have tiny pinholes. Some of them have been folded showing creases. Most of the plates are frayed and worn at the edges with a few small tears and dog-ears. Several plates are foxed or spotted. Four plates are in lesser condition: plate 2 has large folds the lower corners are damaged and there is foxing; plate 26 has two long creases and a large tear; plate 36 has a crease a damaged corner and a tear of six cm.; plate 56 is almost torn through the middle. NOTE: The beautiful plates of the famous Drawing Course Cours de dessin by Bargue and Gérome were made for beginning students of drawing schools and art academies to copy. In this way they could become familiar with the principles of contour light and shade and at the same time develop an appreciation for 'good taste' by looking at examples of great art. The drawings of the first part of the course were made after plaster casts of famous classical and renaissance statues. The series starts with simple forms of isolated body-parts and then offers images of gradually increasing complexity. To help the student to manage the essential forms of a head or torso many plates are divided into two parts. A schematic outline with straight lines and angles stands beside the finished drawing. § The plates of the drawing course are now hard to find. Of the original publication of 197 loose-leaf lithography plates divided into three parts there are only a few complete sets known. Our collection is a part of the first volume: 'Modèles d'après la bosse' Models after casts which consisted of 70 plates. It was published in 1868. The second series completed in 1870 was: 'Modèles d'après les Maîtres de toutes les époques et de toutes les écoles' Models after masters of all periods and all schools. The third series completed in 1873 was: 'Exercices au fusain pour préparer à l'étude de l'académie d'après nature' Charcoal exercises in preparation for drawing the academic nude. The first two sections were meant for schools for design and decorative arts. The third section with live models was used only in art academies. There were no instructions published with the plates that was left to the teachers in the schools. It was common practice in the schools to start with copying prints and drawing from plaster casts of classical statues. As a second stage students copied old masters. In the art academies they then went on to live models. This training was part of the tradition of 19th century neoclassicsm. The imitation of nature was the only goal for artists. Objects and human bodies should be drawn and painted meticulously. Works of art were both realistic and idealistic following the concept of 'good taste'. In France this resulted in smooth and finished works influenced by the standards of the French 'Académie des Beaux-Arts'. This so-called 'Academic Art' came under criticism at the end of the 19th century when the concept of art changed radically. The Drawing Course is the last great document of the 19th century tradition of art education. It was widely used in France and England. § Vincent van Gogh writes about it in his letters he has worked through the whole course at least once. Van Gogh worked very hard on this course because he hoped to gain some income with the sale of his drawings. In a sketchbook owned by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam there are several pencil drawings made after Bargue's plates. Nowadays the didactic and artistic quality of the course is greatly admired by both amateur and professional artists. § The firm Goupil & Cie was an important publisher of original prints and art reproductions in Paris. They hired skilled engravers and lithographers and used the latest techniques. The firm also developed into a renowned art dealer. The 'Cours de dessin' sold very well for Goupil and loose plates were still sold until the firm was dissolved around 1920. Charles Bargue 1826-1883 was a French draughtsman lithographer and painter who has left a small number of paintings. Jean-Léon Gérome 1824-1904 was a French painter and sculptor an esteemed representative of academic art. The main source for information on the course is: G.M. Ackerman. Charles Bargue with the collaboration of Jean-Léon Gérôme Drawing Course. Paris ACR 2017 first edition 2003. A copy of this book is added. unknown

Provenance: George Woodroofe Goyder with the pastedown of each volume inscribed in his hand 'Hill Side Cottage Medindie April 1858'. George Woodroofe Goyder 1826-1898 South Australia's surveyor-general for thirty-three years is best remembered for the eponymous Goyder's Line 'the line of demarcation between that portion of the country where the rainfall has extended and that where the drought prevails' a line of reliable rainfall that separates agricultural from pastoral lands. 'Goyder joined the Department of Lands as chief clerk in January 1853. In quick stages he rose from second assistant to assistant surveyor-general in January 1857. In April he took charge of an exploration to report on country north of pastoral settlement. He was amazed to find Lake Torrens full of fresh water and its flourishing eastern surroundings very different from the desert described by Edward Eyre in 1839. His exuberant report persuaded the surveyor-general Captain Sir Arthur Freeling to examine the area in September. No more rain had fallen but hot winds had killed the vegetation and turned the lake into a bed of mud. Freeling returned to criticize Goyder for mistaking flood for permanent water being misled by mirage and misconceiving the value of the northern country. Although Goyder had proved that Eyre's horseshoe of salt lakes was penetrable and thereby opened the way to further exploration he was too conscientious to ignore his blunder and in 1859 at his own request led survey parties to triangulate the country between Lakes Torrens and Eyre and to sink wells. When Freeling resigned Goyder was recalled from the north to become surveyor-general on 19 January 1861' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'.
Goyder married in 1851; by 1856 the family with four children moved from rented accommodation in North Adelaide 'a short distance across the parklands to Medindie . into a "neat cottage" with six rooms a garden and a vineyard . Named Hillside the cottage was located on a private road now Hawkers Road close to Robe Terrace overlooking the parklands' Janis Sheldrick: 'Nature's Line. George Goyder - Surveyor Environmentalist Visionary' 2013. It is intriguing to discover that Goyder acquired a set of Sturt's account of his 1844-46 Central Australian expedition in search of an inland sea in April 1858 the year after his own expedition to Lake Torrens. 'The expedition started by following the Murray and Darling both to settle any doubt about the confluence of the two rivers and to avoid the "horseshoe" of Lake Torrens which had halted Eyre's progress a few years before' Wantrup and confounded Goyder himself in 1857. Wantrup 119 noting the point that distinguishes the first issue an inserted advertisement for Melville immediately following the text in the first volume: 'this leaf was suppressed shortly after publication of Sturt's book'. 2 items. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 12 of 1862. The earliest printing of McKinlay's journal of his Burke and Wills Relief Expedition and a rarity. 'The South Australian House of Assembly chose John McKinlay to lead the South Australian relief expedition in August 1861. Setting out from Kapunda with a well-equipped party he reached Cooper's Creek in October. From his depot at Lake Buchanan he made numerous excursions into the surrounding country and found what he believed to be the grave of one of the Burke party. Coming to the conclusion that all of Burke's men had died he sent back for instructions. When his instructions arrived he learned that Howitt had already discovered King and that Burke Wills and Gray were indeed dead.
McKinlay proceeded to examine the land to the north of Lake Eyre discovering much useful pastoral and grazing land. In December he set out for the Gulf of Carpentaria to rendezvous with the Northern Relief Expedition under Commander Norman. His crossing was made difficult by diminished stores and his position was critical in May 1862 when he arrived with his men at the Albert River where he expected to find relief only to discover that the "Victoria" had already sailed. Sensibly he decided to make for the Queensland coastal settlement at Port Denison 500 miles to the east. After a difficult trip of over three months McKinlay brought all his men into Port Denison by the end of August.
When he reached Adelaide in October 1862 McKinlay handed his journal to the South Australian Government. It was printed soon afterwards in the South Australian parliamentary papers. The text of his journal was later published for general distribution in the colonies by two Melbourne publishers' Wantrup.
Only the first public account published by Baillière in 1863 contained maps 'three large folding maps loose in a back endpocket' but it is 'virtually unprocurable in fine clean condition owing to the poor quality of the paper used' Wantrup. This first edition large-format parliamentary paper is far superior in every respect. McLaren 12963; Wantrup 2023 pages 317-18. W.C. Cox, Government Printer hardcover
1942140203Adelaide: The Author 1942. First Edition. Paperback. Near fine. Adelaide The Author 1942. Quarto 63 pages. Saddle-stapled grey card covers lettered in black very slightly creased and marked with one trifling snag at the foot of the spine; edges slightly thumbed; a near-fine copy. Two typographical errors have been corrected in pencil by the author: on the dedication page it is now 'juvenilia' not 'juvenalia' at the end of the first line; and on page 55 'spoilation' is now 'spoliation'. However we note in passing that 'daguerrotype' in the line above got through unnoticed. Number 138 of an undated limited edition with the upper limit not stated numbered and signed by Hal Porter. This is a presentation copy of his first stand-alone work additionally inscribed and signed in ink at the head of the title page 'To dear Lucy Lockett with love and gratitude from Hal. 14 xii 1944'. The recipient Lucy Lockett Ayers 1886-1971 was a granddaughter of Sir Henry Ayers.
The revised edition of Porter's biography by Mary Lord 'Hal Porter - Man of Many Parts' 1993 states '"Short Stories" came out late in 1942 in a limited edition of 250 copies. Most if not all were numbered and signed then distributed randomly and recklessly by the author. The volume contained fourteen stories none of which had been published and one of which was the prize-winning "And from Madame's sic"' page 28. The precise details of the publication remain unclear. Lord's checklist indicates that the book was printed by the Adelaide 'Advertiser' and gives a date of '1942' but the very few perfunctory press notices relating to the book appear in April and May 1943 perhaps suggesting a later date of publication. Although copies are undoubtedly now extremely scarce whatever the truth of the matter this presentation inscription demonstrates that Porter still had copies to hand in December 1944.
The stories contained in this collection are 'The Room' 'And from Madame's .' 'The Two Bachelors' 'At Aunt Sophia's' 'No-one Knows!' 'Miss Rodda' 'Carnival Piece' 'Cafe Samovar' 'Scene: The Bend of a River' 'Otto Ruff' 'Gone Away' 'The White Rabbit' 'Miss Brockel' and '- And Nothing More'.
Loosely inserted is a typescript of a contemporary review of the book 1 page quarto with two of the six paragraphs struck out with pencil. We have been unable to determine whether or not it was published or if Lucy Lockett Ayers is the reviewer. 2 items. The Author paperback
