The Longman edition may have been preceded by an edition in parts advertised as "The Cheapest History of the Wars" in the Literary Gazette London: Henry Colburn 1817 and first published on March 1st by Simpkin and Marshall and Sherwood and Co. and sold by T. Rogerson. This edition bears the pronounced error of the "1792" on the title pg of Vol I being printed as "1793" on Vol. II's title page. The work Baines' first -- significant portions of which were later found to have been lifted verbatim from an earlier history by Alexander Stephens -- was wildly popular upon publication and would have likely been in high demand in any form; it was reissued as part of Baines' larger work on George III published in 1820. Field 602: "The fur traders of the eighteenth century.in coasting along the shores of Vancouver's and Nootka Sounds carried with them some of the words of each of the tribes who they visited; until at the mouth of the Columbia River they found a quick-witted people who adopted the mongrel jargon they heard from the lips of strangers and blended the fragments of twelve native tongues with some English and French terms into a sort of language possessing nearly 500 words. With a map of individual lots parcels and features of the community including polo fields and country club on one side and a listing of names of residents and their places with black & white photos on the verso. Near fine copy with faint handling a few tiny notations in ink and creases from folding. Hope Ranch is named after Irishman Thomas Hope who purchased the land in 1861 for $8000 for sheep ranching. After his death in 1876 his heirs sold the ranch for $250000 to the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1923 Harold Chase bought the land with the intention to develop it into the upscale residential community of 773 lots encompassing 1863 acres it remains to this day. First edition.<br /><br />The autobiography of Jon Olafsson Traveler to the Indies remained unprinted in Icelandic save for a few excerpts until 1908-9 when an edition by Sigfus Blondal Librarian to the Royal Library was published in Copenhagen by the Icelandic Literary Society. The text in this edition which was based on a scholarly collation of the extant MMS. has been implicitly followed in the English translation. The life of Jon Olafsson falls into three parts; or perhaps more properly since only the first two parts are written by himself into two parts and an appendix. The first part opening with his childhood and youth in the remote north-west of Iceland his voyage to England in 1615 and his brief stay in that country has for its main subject his experiences as gunner's mate in Copenhagen and on various Northern voyages in the service of King Christian IV. It is this part which is comprised in the present volume. The second part edited by the Hakluyt Society deals with Jon Olafsson's voyage to India in 1622 his life as a member of the Danish garrison in the fort at Tranquebaar and the voyage home in 1624-5 a terrible record of privation in a rudderless vessel; his stay with other survivors at Youghal in Ireland and his return to Copenhagen towards the end of the year which had seen Christian IV's ill-fated entry into the Thirty Years' War. The autobiographical part ends with his return to Iceland in the Spring of 1626. It is followed by an account of the remainder of his life probably composed by someone in the household of Magnus Magnusson sheriff of Isafjoro Jon's native country--possibly the sheriff himself--and ending with Jon's death in 1679 in his eighty-fifth year. This third part is of value for the full account of the raid on the Barbary corsairs on Iceland in 1627.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Spine ends moderately rubbed volume II spine lightly sunned else a very good set. Bound in half-cloth and dark-green paper-covered boards with lovely art nouveau design stamped in black endpapers patterened with the company logo attractive design features throughout. Foot of spine bumped foxing to last four pages binding has a little play but overall a nice copy. Laid in is an embossed compliments card sent with the book printed on thick cardstock and dated January 1 1906. Founded in 1881 Geo. Borgfeldt & Company was best known as an importer and distributer of dolls and other toys but also dealt in china and cut glass stationery musical instruments imported glassware household furnishings decorative objects and a variety of "notions' and "fancy goods." Later in the 20th century the company would obtain the first major contract to sell Disney character merchandise. According to this book -- the only published history of this successful company - George Borgfeldt "conceived of the idea" of being able to offer Americans merchants easier access to a variety of foreign goods by "assembling in New York samples of the products of the best factories of Europe manufacturing dolls toys and kindred articles and of booking import orders through the display of these samples." His first location at 83 Leonard Street in New York City had 6.750 square feet of display space in which 100000 items were available for inspection by wholesale buyers. The text goes on to describe the evolution of this sales model and the company's subsequent growth. Separate short sections summarize the history of each of the different sales departments. Geo. B Ives. The collection is a mixture of European masters and American artists including many portraits mostly of the Wadsworth family views of Ancient Rome historical paintings representing American independence and American and European landscapes. The Wadsworth Museum is one of Americas most important cultural institutions. It was founded in 1842 and was one of the first institutions to purchase and import European art into the United States. In addition to paintings the Gallery hosted the Hartford Public Library and the Connecticut Historical Society and changed its name to the Wadsworth Athenaeum.
