Dust jacket is missing a 3 x 1 inch chunk top of front cover causing about half of the title to be gone. Dust jacket spine is age tanned. Old tape repair to back of dust jacket. Pages show normal aging for a 100 year old book crisp but not brittle. Very tight book that probably was read only a few times. Boards remarkably bright. 8vo., First Edition, First Issue, with a lithographed frontispiece finely coloured by hand (original tissue guard present) and 2 lithographed plates finely coloured by hand (original tissue guards present), some mild age-staining to title and last few leaves, contemporary inscription on frontispiece recto; original red cloth, upper board with blind frame border enclosing title in gilt, gilt edges, neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, new yellow endpapers to style, boards mildly age-stained else a very good, firm copy. With a small quanitity of relevant cuttings loosely inserted. The second dedicated history of the regiment, following the anonymous account of 1828. The plates comprise one of colours and two of uniform (1713 and 1866). Carter was Cannon's assistant in the compilation of the latter's well-known 'Historical Records' series. At Cannon's retirement Carter was considered as editor but the Treasury elected to discontinue the series and Carter therefore published this work independently. Unsold copies were reissued in 1883 with an additional eight pages titled 'Conclusion of the Historical Record' and 24 coloured plates of uniform by Simkin. In this Second Issue the plate of 1713 is often missing. Very scarce. Sutcliffe, p.167; White, p.79.

A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO [MAJOR-]GENERAL SIR GEORGE JEFFREYS WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON HALF-TITLE. Major-General Sir George Jeffreys (1878-1960) was commissioned in the Grenadier Guards in 1897. He served at the Nile, in the Second Boer War and extensively throughout WWI. Mentioned in despatches several times, he commanded 2Bn in 1915, subsequently 58th Brigade, 57th Brigade, and finally 1st (Guards) Brigade in 1916. In 1917 he was appointed GOC 19th Division. Post-war he served as GOC Light Division British Army of the Rhine and as GOCiC of Southern Command in India before his retirement in 1938. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Jeffreys in 1952. His association with the present work stems from his position as Deputy Lieutenant of the county of Hampshire, Chairman of the Hampshire Territorial Army Association and a decade or so as MP for Petersfield. Speakers include: Lt.-Col. Cec Merritt, VC; Maj. "Lefty" White, C.S.M; Ed Dunkerly; Murray Osten, M.C.; Pte. Paul Delorme; Pte. A. "Schelley" Schellenberg; C.S.M. Elmer "Gunga" Dean, M.M.; Pte. Fred James; Cpl. Art Charnell; Herman Keys; Maj. Peter Watkinson (adjutant); and Les Moore. Each tape is rated at 90 minutes but we do not know how many minutes of conversation are actually recorded. Each tape comes with a labelled insert. Clean and unmarked with light wear. Book

Good firm signature ‘C Yorke’ and its surroundings unaffected. A printed form letter signed by Yorke as ‘Right Honble. the Pay-Master General / &c. &c. &c.’ and completed in a secretarial hand and addressed to ‘Gentlemen’.
