He has done his best to procure information from officers who served with the regiment to supplement the generally scant and laconic accounts of the war diaries' (Falls). A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO [MAJOR-]GENERAL SIR GEORGE JEFFREYS WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON HALF-TITLE. Major-General Sir George Jeffreys (1878-1960) was commissioned in the Grenadier Guards in 1897. He served at the Nile, in the Second Boer War and extensively throughout WWI. Mentioned in despatches several times, he commanded 2Bn in 1915, subsequently 58th Brigade, 57th Brigade, and finally 1st (Guards) Brigade in 1916. In 1917 he was appointed GOC 19th Division. Post-war he served as GOC Light Division British Army of the Rhine and as GOCiC of Southern Command in India before his retirement in 1938. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Jeffreys in 1952. His association with the present work stems from his position as Deputy Lieutenant of the county of Hampshire, Chairman of the Hampshire Territorial Army Association and a decade or so as MP for Petersfield. Four small tears to front free end paper where presumably glue from a bookplate on pastedown has seeped and then stuck the pastedown and ffep together. Tears occured when someone separated them. The tears don't affect the author's inscription although one does slightly affect where he has dated the page. The date is still there the small torn piece is still attached at the spine there is another same sized area not written on just below which is also still attached at the spine. ; Inscribed by Osborne to Hon. Julius Rockwell former U. S. Senator Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Mass. Superior Court Judge. Previous owner - Emery L. Frazier - signature and bookplate on front pastedown. Frazier was a Kentucky politician after a long career in law and politics was Secretary of the U. S. Senate. Within book is a 5 1/4" x 4" wide single sheet of note paper with heading at top of sheet reading "United States Senate - Memorandum" folded vertically someone had used as a bookmark. At upper left of copyright page is a mostly faint ink stamp "Dr. W. W. Rockwell July 12 1943". It's bled just a few small spots to opposite page Preface but above the text. Very bright covers and front cover gilt lettering spine lettering and eagle below is very bright also although spine cloth is a bit darkened compared to the blue of front and back covers; 393 pages; Signed by Author . 12126The nine items all from Kandy Ceylon Sri Lanka and dating from October 1817 to January 1819. The nine items in this collection provide valuable information regarding the management of the estate of a Georgian colonial British army office. Coane's battalion had served in New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land between 1812 and 1814 and had been in Ceylon under Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Giels since 1814 by the time Coane died on 5 January 1819 his demise much regretted by his superiors. The nine items are on aged and worn paper with chipping to extremities. ONE: Autograph Letter Signed from 'George. Minter' to unnamed recipient. Kandy; 29 December 1818. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. The letter begins in dramatic style: 'Dear Sir Ere this reaches you I much fear Major Coane will be no more. Mr Marshall as well as Dr. Armstrong who have been in constant attendance on him for the last three days having just told me that they have little or no hopes of his surviving till to morrow.' He writes that Coane 'still remains sensible' and wishes the recipient to turn over 'His Will and other papers' to 'the Committee of Paymastership'. Like the recipient Minter has been appointed by Coane one of his executors. TWO: Account by Minter of 'The property of the late Major Coane in my possession'. Signed by Minter and dated Kandy 8 January 1819. 1p. landscape 8vo. Marked 'No 1'.
