The Management Center was formerly the detention facility for 982 Japanese prisoners those considered to be the worst offenders against the Chinese people in World War II. Better than average paper from this period. This issue of The Chicago Times includes an article that starts on the back page about the Naval Attack on Fort Fisher. The article indicates some mistakes were made by land forces. Perhaps more importantly there is a brief description of the role "the monitors" played in the battle. The little gunboats seemed to do well in this encounter. </p> books

President Polk describes the status of Mexican-American relations asserts that a state of war exists and calls for upon the Congress to recognize the state of affairs. Specifically Polk transmits the details of the Slidell mission which sought the purchase of New Mexico and California. The failure of John Slidell's mission was a proximate cause of the ensuing hostilities. This message is dated May 11 1846 and Congress declared war the very next day.
