Howard was one of the "vice presidents" of the celebration and was instrumental in its execution and Edwin A. Sherman was the "orator of the day." The writer of this letter refers to the events leading up to the Mexican War which was precipitated by actions of President Polk in part: "George M. Dallas played Judas; and James K. Polk is a mere tool in the hands of John C. Calhoun & Company. I do not pity the Pennsylvanians so much they were told better by such men as Webster and others. The United States reach no farther north than Mason's and Dixon's line if we might judge by the legislation of James K. Polk. He is valorous against an important foe but as obsequious as a spaniel when 'Queen Victoria' speaks. The Mexican War is a second edition of the slave hunt in Florida refers to the 1st Seminole War which was actually directed in part against runaway slaves. $100000000 will hardly suffice to defray the expense of the War of Conquest." The United States entered into a treaty with Spain during the cessation of Florida which detailed mutual claims against each other and payment for losses. While some of these claims were settled the Spanish citizens of Florida claim that the U.S. have used semantics to avoid full settlement specifically for damages sustained during Jackson's expedition against Pensacola in 1814. The present copy has a list of twenty-nine subscribers from East Hartford tipped to the final text leaf. Many notable and famous shipwrecks are described including a number on American shores. However this work is most notable for its account of the famous fight between the Chesapeake and the Shannon off Boston Harbor on June 1 1813. The battle is described in detail and Capt. Lawrence's famous words of defiance "Don't give up the ship" appear here for the first time. Written by a Captain Noah Chasman to Sergeant Ezra Fobes directing him to notify various soldiers who were evidently AWOL to comply with the war-time quota of mandatory soldier attendance in the state militia in large part: "These are to order and direct you to notify and warn the several persons hereafter.to appear compleat sic in uniform horses and other equipments as the law directs on Fryday sic 24th of this month at one o clock P.M. at the North part of Bridgewater." With a listing of the AWOL soldiers at the conclusion. Evenly toned with the usual folds associated with a field order directive; weakness and staining at the folds. Letter concerning the secession on March 9 1739 of the "Patriots" from the House of Commons over the negotiations preceding the War of Jenkins' Ear. The Patriots were Tories and disaffected Whigs who opposed Sir Robert Walpole the first Prime Minister. Walpole argued for peace and moderation in dealing with Spain and he was supported by a scant majority. This letter presents the informed view of a member of Parliament displaying the furor in England for the protection of their American trade and decrying the factitious nature of English politics. The secession proved advantageous for Walpole because it allowed him to push through several bills relating to the free exportation of sugar and molasses from the West Indian Colonies. ESTC T138894. Wrapper edges worn chipped. Internally clean sound. <br/><br/>An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings likely the work of a single unnamed illustrator and photograph reproductions executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud holding a harp wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots and there are old piltos 'But!' - there are no old bold pilots." Six chapters are broken into dozens of sections with titles like: Your Parachute Safety Inherent Stability Turns Normal Spins Landings Steep Turns Precision Immelmans Progressive Spins etc. The impact of the allied air campaign and skill of American pilots during World War II is seldom mentioned in modesty. This is a rare flight training publication and exceptional example of illustrative instruction. OCLC notes only 2 institutional holdings one at The Smithsonian the other in the aviation archives at Wright State in Dayton OH.
