Binding detached from text block. Lightly tanned minor wear and soiling. Mimeographed work enumerating Indiana women who served in World War I. Entries are alphabetical listing each woman's name birth date enlistment date and service record. The two leaves of plates at the end printed on both sides contain portraits of 128 servicewomen many of whom were nurses. Though there are twenty copies listed in OCLC all but two are in Indiana libraries Temple Public Library in Texas and the Library of Congress. unknown books
191921532Cambridge: The Riverside Press 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 222 pp 7.5 x 5.25 inches in publisher's blue cloth with mounted spine label. Spine toned label rubbed but legible one small stain on front board. Internally clean and sound. No dust jacket. Elizabeth Cabot Putnam was the daughter of Harvard neurologist James Jackson Putnam. She graduated from Radcliffe in 1910 and in 1917 went to Paris where she worked as a secretary for the American Expeditionary Force's Air Service and as a Red Cross volunteer. Her letters home to her family discuss both her work and her general experiences as a young woman in a foreign country at war. Occasionally she comes across as a breezy society girl rather than someone viewing the horrors of war but at other times she is clearly deeply affected. Finally getting to rest after working at a hospital until three AM she looks out a window at the beautiful sky and writes "It was more than one could bear with equanimity -- so heavenly outside and so horrible inside -- all the blood and the hacked-up flesh and the thought of how each one is going to suffer when he gets out of ether." She cared for French soldiers ar the American Ambulance Hospital in Paris and for wounded Marines at a hospital in Neuilly. In mid-1918 she worked as a Red Cross searcher helping to track down missing servicemen. The Riverside Press hardcover books

One of 300 numbered copies. Inscribed presentation copy from the local chapter of the Red Cross to a member who served in the unit in Caserne La Marche near Toul. There is a solo fighter plane and a squadron of planes near the statue. The left panel states “Give us peace and liberty†and the other “Let the land we love be freeâ€. There is light waterstaining to the side of the right panel and it opens easily. It was printed by the Joyce Funeral Home of Madison Wisconsin and this is published on the back. unknown books

The poster incorporates a photograph of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in an automobile at an inspection site looking at a performance report with military officers. The text below the image states in part: "Having seen the quality of the work and of the workers . and coupling these first-hand observations with the reports of actual performance of our weapons on the fighting fronts -- I can say. that we are getting ahead of our enemies in the battle of production. 197059774Boston: Beacon Press 1970. First edition. 8vo pp. 123. A very good copy in price clipped little worn dj bookplate. A very good copy. Scarce early book of war resistance. Berrigan served eighteen months in Danbury prison for his activities in resisting the Vietman War. He and his brother Philip were for a time on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list for involvement in antiwar protests during the Vietnam war and committing acts of vandalism including destroying government property in recruiting offices. Berrigan won the Lamont Prize for his book of poems Time Without Number. He manufactured homemade napalm and with eight other Catholic protesters used it to destroy 378 draft files in the parking lot of the Catonsville Maryland draft board on May 17 1968. This group came to be known as the Catonsville Nine. Berrigan was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison but went into hiding with the help of fellow radicals prior to imprisonment. While on the run Berrigan was interviewed for Lee Lockwood's documentary The Holy Outlaw. The FBI apprehended him at the home of William Stringfellow and sent him to prison. He was released in 1972. The quantities are calculated for customs duties and signed by the agents in charge in manuscript. The reverse with the District and Port of Philadelphia bill of lading affirmation printed information filled-in by the agent William H. Pile and affirmed by the Dep. Collector of the port with various other signatures noting duties paid on the blank panel at the bottom of the sheet. Form with a small woodcut sailing ship at upper left corner printed and sold by John C. Clark & Son 230 Dock Street Philadelphia. Approx. 11" x 16 3/4" size; old fold lines little nicks to the paper edges edge-soiling; in very good condition. The goods were imported by John Mason & Co. and are listed in the packages and contents section of the form. The quantities are calculated for customs duties on the following sheet and signed by the agents in charge in manuscript. The reverse with the affirmation printed information not filled-in; and with receipted note of duties paid on the blank panel at the bottom of the sheet. Both sheets secured together at top left corner by a metal grommet. Documents approx. 10 3/4" x 17" size; with old fold lines little nicks to the paper edges edge-soiling; discolored at bottom quarter - no loss to text.
