President Polk describes the status of Mexican-American relations asserts that a state of war exists and calls for upon the Congress to recognize the state of affairs. Specifically Polk transmits the details of the Slidell mission which sought the purchase of New Mexico and California. The failure of John Slidell's mission was a proximate cause of the ensuing hostilities. This message is dated May 11 1846 and Congress declared war the very next day.
