1919CAT0119New York: Underwood and Underwood 1919. First Edition. Gelatin silver prints 7 ¾ x 5 ½ inches each on 11 ½ x 7 inch black paper mounts captioned with affixed text. Very Good. Two WWI-era press photographs related to the Negro 15th Infantry Division of the New York National Guard a.k.a. the 369th US Infantry Regiment and their white commander Colonel William Hayward. One photograph shows the division on parade in New York following their return from combat duty in France in 1919 the other is a well-known image of Hayward who organized the all-black unit and served as its leader. Fighting for a record-breaking 191 consecutive days alongside French troops in the trenches the regiment became known as the “Harlem Hellfighters.†

The opportunity for African-Americans to serve in WWI arose from the Selective Service Act of 1917 which drafted all men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty. Special segregated training camps were established and units were formed. The US National Archives states that 200000 African-Americans served in Europe during WWI but only 42000 saw combat. When the 15th Infantry arrived in France in 1918 Hayward was committed to the idea that his unit would fight on the front lines. After General Pershing refused to integrate them with the full US army Hayward pushed for another assignment under French command. Unlike many other segregated divisions in WWI the 15th aka 369th was eventually sent to the trenches. Its members' distinguished service brought honor and fame. Before leaving the US in 1917 the regiment had not been allowed to participate in the New York National Guard’s farewell parade. When they returned victorious Hayward ensured they were publicly honored.

Both with various press stamps to versos. Small closed tear of about a half inch to upper edge of parade picture good overall. Hayward portrait with some rippling at edges very good overall. Underwood and Underwood unknown
1905List3150Tokyo Japan 1905. Two postcards measuring 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Near Fine. Two postcards from Kyoske Uyeda in Japan to his friend Bessie Mulkey in San Francisco dated May and July 1905. At the time the Russo-Japanese War fought over the Russian and Japanese Empires’ imperial ambitions for Manchuria and Korea was nearing its end. Uyeda had been on the front; in his earlier postcard he writes:

“May 5th 1905 I left the front at the end of March after the great victory around Mukden and have been back to Tokyo for sometime. I congratulate myself that I was fortunate enough to come back to the country at this glorious season of all sorts of beautiful flowers. The people too are enjoying the seasons as if there is no such terrible thing as war. They are having picnics every day. I will leave the country for the front within a short time. Kyo.â€

Mukden—present-day Shenyang Liaoning province—was the site of the war’s final land battle fought from February to March 1905 and resulting in a decisive victory for Imperial Japan. In his second postcard Uyeda is set to depart for another significant location in the war:

“I will leave here for Port Arthur to-morrow and having stayed there a day or two and coming back here am probably to go to our Headquarters at Mukhden to attend to the annual celebration of the day in which our Manchurian Expedition Army organised that is on the 6th of July 04. I expect a grand time there Marshal Oyama Gen. Baron Kodama Gen. Kuroki and many other grand chieftains will assemble at the Capital of Manchuria.â€

Port Arthur now Lüshunkou District in Liaoning province China was seized by the Japanese in 1894 during the First Sino-Japanese War; returned to China in 1895; and then leased in an unequal treaty by the Russian Empire in 1898. Japan’s surprise attack against the Russian fleet at Port Arthur launched the war in February 1904 and resulted in Japan retaking the port.

Uyeda’s notes are written on interesting themed postcards depicting the Imperial Japanese Navy; one reads “Our Combined Squadron steaming towards the enemy†and the other “Our torpedoboat squadron returning to a naval base after fighting with the enemy.†How Uyeda and Mulkey would have met and begun a correspondence is unclear. unknown
1783303187Minorca 1783. Two single sheets. Folio. Very good copies a little toned old folds. Two single sheets. Folio. The first is titled: "No. 26 Pay List for additional Subsistence etc to the officers in st. Philips Castle from 25 Dec. 1781 to 23 Feb. 1782." The second has written on the verso: " No. 136 Pay List to make up Subs. to Brevet Officer etc equal to the Rank where in they respectively serve in The Garrison of Fort St. Philips during the Siege Decemb. 24 1781 - Dollars 4350-50." These two officer pay lists are signed by each of the 36 and 44 listed officers. They're a wonderful souvenir of the siege and with a sample of every officer's signature a valuable source for further research.

The five month Siege of Minorca August 19 1781 - February 5 1782 was a vital victory over England in the European theatre of the Revolutionary War. Throughout most of the eighteenth century English possession of the island was of real strategic importance from its deep-water harbor the Royal Navy could launch attacks against the Mediterranean fleets of Spain France and Italy. unknown
1865List2219Baltimore and Worcester County 1865. Two documents affixed at top edge measuring 9 x 6 ¾ and 14 x 8 ½ inches. Tape repairs at folds some with heavy clear tape else excellent good condition overall. With the embossed stamp of the Board of Claims to first document and two revenue stamps affixed. Good. A pair of documents relating to the emancipation through military service of Thomas Massey of Maryland and compensation to his enslaver Joseph Godrey of Worcester County Virginia. Massey enlisted in the 9th Regiment of the USCT in 1864 and in accordance with Order 329 of the U.S. War Department Godfrey received compensation which was not to exceed $300. The present documents “To facilitate recruiting in the states of Maryland Missouri Tennessee and Kentucky the War Department issued General Order No. 329 on October 3 1863. Section 6 of the order stated that if any citizen should offer his or her slave for enlistment into the military service that person would "if such slave be accepted receive from the recruiting officer a certificate thereof and become entitled to compensation for the service or labor of said slave not exceeding the sum of three hundred dollars upon filing a valid deed of manumission and of release and making satisfactory proof of title." https://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/blacks-civil-war/article.html The order was meant to provide financial incentives to enslavers following the Emancipation Proclamation earlier that year. We find a record of a Thomas Massey from Worcester County born in 1855 which would raise the possibility that he enlisted at age 9 or that the Thomas Massey in question in these documents is not findable in the genealogical references we checked. unknown

The letters were written by George Roden who was born in 1841 from Newark New Jersey who was the son of English immigrants and served in the 2nd New Jersey Infantry regiment. He was a corporal at the time these letters were written. The letters talk about the desolation of the Virginia countryside. 2002162482London: DGIA Ministry of Defence 2002. First edition stretching from Baghdad to Basrah and showing all of Kuwait. The sheet was likely issued to RAF pilots in the run up to the Iraq War and is printed on rayon for ease of use and durability. These charts produced by the Defence Geographic and Imagery Intelligence Agency feature many warnings about flying within controlled airspace in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The RAF flew many missions over this region in the lead-up to the Second Gulf War and in Operation Telic. "The first documented intimations of UK involvement in the operation that became Telic can be traced to March 2002. In May the Chief of the Defence Staff CDS was advised of a potential RAF contribution to a future operation in Iraq comprising 88 fast jets and 38 support platforms - more aircraft than the RAF had deployed on a single operation since the First Gulf War and more in all probability than it will ever deploy again" Ritchie p. 5. A formal plan was drafted in August to overwhelm Hussein's government through multiple co-ordinated fronts of which the RAF's role was to eradicate the enemy air force destroy equipment support ground forces and strike important targets to shock the Iraqi people. According to the key there was another sheet issued charting northern Iraq. Single sheet of rayon 912 x 1300 mm colour map with key on recto and verso. Sometime folded and thinning along lines: a near-fine copy. Sebastian Ritchie "The Royal Air Force in Operation Telic: Offensive Air Power March-April 2003" 2021. unknown

A collection of women’s fitness press photographs taken around Cleveland in 1942 from the archives of the Cleveland News. Excellent. 1945List3159Manila The Philippines 1945. Twenty-one photos: twelve measuring 2 ½ x 2 ½ inches most with stamped captions verso; nine measuring 2 x 3 ¾ inches most with captions on negative. Some wear; excellent. Imperial Japan occupied the Philippines from 1942 until its surrender in 1945. From early February to early March of 1945 American and Filipino forces fought to drive the Japanese out of the Philippines’ capital city of Manila. Though successful this campaign was incredibly destructive to both the infrastructure of Manila and to its people—including mass murder and rape of Filipino civilians by Japanese forces. Offered here are twenty-one photographs of buildings taken before and after the destruction of the city with most the twelve smaller photos showing the aftermath. Locations include several churches and university buildings the treasury building legislative building Manila Central Post Office and others. The photos taken after the battle are arresting showing Manila’s ruined architecture burnt out trees and downed power lines. unknown
