Seventy-seven Kodak color photographs almost all approximately 3 1/2 x 5 inches a handful slightly smaller and one postcard. Slim quarto. Contemporary glossy purple floral-patterned cloth photograph album gilt- stamped label on front cover. Some images slightly faded. Overall very good. A highly entertaining collection of vernacular photographs capturing the lives of young African-American G.I.s and their romantic interests in a village in Thailand during the latter years of the Vietnam War. The photographs show African-American men in both uniforms and street clothes often posed alone or with Thai locals almost exclusively women. The men are seen at work and play including an image of the gun shop with a sign labeled "Phase Section" on the front and a large military van with a similar sign reading "2 Orange." There is also a great deal of coverage of the locals living in the village including women and children. One photograph of particular interest shows part of a commercial building emblazoned with both a Coca-Cola and a Pepsi sign. The date range of 1972 to 1977 stems from the fact that some of the photographs are date-stamped in the margin "Oct 72" and one later image is stamped July 1977; most images seem to emanate from the earlier date. The single postcard is an image of Wang Not Ten Waterfall in Phitsanulok in north-central Thailand. The album could possibly have been retained by a local Thai person documenting their interactions with the visiting Americans. <br> <br> There were a half dozen active American Air Force bases in Thailand during the 1970s from which over 80% of the air strikes of North Vietnam originated. The American servicemen seen in the present photographs were either airmen performing these strikes or ground crew in support of the pilots. Also given that Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base and Phitsanulok are both in north-central Thailand it is likely the images depict this area. <br> <br> A rare look at African-American servicemen in a strategically important region of Thailand during the Vietnam War. hardcover books
195212821Various locations in and around Seoul South Korea 1952. 22 leaves illustrated with seventy-three black-and-white photographs in mounting corners. Oblong quarto. Contemporary black lacquered gutta percha covers illustrated in Korean style string tied. Minor wear. Very good. A unique peek into Army life in 1952 memorializing the experiences of African-American soldiers during the Korean War. The photographs are uncaptioned but provide a vivid picture of camp life during the conflict. Here the soldiers pose alone and in groups both inside and outside military tents and other structures in both sunny and snowy conditions engaged in lifting weights driving a tank working around the base general carousing and other activities. One image captures an African-American soldier standing outside the Seoul City Hospital likely indicating the soldiers were based near the city. In addition to the American servicemen the album includes several images featuring Korean women with a couple of images capturing a pair of women singing and dancing onstage for the troops. A few other images picture simple portraits of Korean women including one image showing a young Korean woman posed with one of the soldiers. The album also features a handful of shots of the Korean countryside with one image picturing a nearby village. Original albums featuring Black soldiers in the Korean War are rarely encountered in the present market. unknown

Contemporary black cloth string-tied. Light soiling to covers. Minor wear to some photographs but overall a handsome selection. A unique collection of vernacular photographs collected by a soldier in the 8th U.S. Cavalry identified simply as D. Watson serving in southwest Texas during the Mexican Border War. The first two pictures emanate from Quartermaster Training Camp in Jacksonville Florida. This is followed by one photo from Barron Field in Everman Texas. The remaining photographs document Watson's time in Ruidosa Texas an unincorporated Texas-Mexico border town in Presidio County about a hundred miles from Terlingua. Here Watson includes photographs of himself and other soldiers and their horses posed in front of old stone structures in orange groves amongst canyons in front of an automobile and more with images of Mexican adobes a wagon advertising an "electric light company" the cavalry preparing their horses scenes of the wilds of southwest Texas and the E.H. Carlton company store. E.H. Carlton was also a principal in the Carlton Van Loan Company an oil speculation firm active in the 1920s. Contemporary brown leather photograph album string-tied. Lacking fore-edge flap spine chipped moderate rubbing and scuffing to boards. Minor occasional wear to photographs. A unique collection of photographs documenting the joint military expedition by Allied Forces into Vladivostok in southeastern Russia after the conclusion of World War I the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War most likely assembled by an American soldier serving there at the time. The American contingent of the incursion was called the American Expeditionary Force Siberia which partnered with nine other countries to attempt to bring stability to the region rescue 40000 members of the Czechoslovakian Legion being held up by Bolsheviks outside Vladivostok protect and retrieve American supplies in eastern Russia and stem the early spread of Communism. A similar expedition to northern Russia now known as the Polar Bear Expedition was attempted in Archangel. By practically every standard the joint missions failed and in fact damaged relations between the Allied Forces and Russia especially for the United States for decades to come. <br /> <br /> The present collection of photographs and real-photo postcards opens with several photo postcards with printed captions showing parades of the military forces of the various Allied countries who participated in the expedition to Vladivostok as they arrived in the city. These include the British Army landing in Vladivostok the Imperial Japanese Expedition marching in front of the Czech Headquarters the Japanese Vanguard relieving the Imperial Japanese Naval Party the French Army landing in the city the Allied Naval Fleet in the Vladivostok harbor and two views of the landing of the American Army. Two additional captioned postcards show the Czech forces joining the French Army and a rather shocking image of about ten dead Czech soldiers with the image captioned "Czech victims in vicinity of Nicholoske former Bolshevik Head-quarters at Vladivostok." <br /> <br /> The remainder of the photo postcards and photographs capture additional parades numerous street scenes but also scores of images showing the outskirts and countryside around Vladivostok ships from various countries anchored in the harbor or trying to navigate the icy conditions military patrols often carrying weapons American and other soldiers interacting with the locals scenes along the railway views of refugees fleeing the region and much more. Upon arriving in Vladivostok American soldiers were tasked with guarding segments of the rail lines of the Trans-Siberian Railroad running into and out of Vladivostok. American forces are seen here performing those duties but also overseeing a temporary dormitory of beds in an evacuation hospital patrolling the area around the city as well as the refugees along the railway hanging out in their makeshift barracks and more with one image even showing a group of American soldiers posing in baseball uniforms.<br /> <br /> Particularly striking are the images of the indigenous refugees posed near the railroad and in other locations. Some of the subjects appear to be Siberian nomads but others traveling along the rail line are almost certainly Czech refugees fleeing Russia after their role in fighting for their own freedom against the new Russian regime. Several photos here capture groups of people obviously en route to somewhere else along the railroad at train depots and resting in makeshift encampments or tent cities overseen by military personnel.<br /> <br /> Historical material from the Vladivostok expedition is exceedingly rare especially images of soldiers with boots on the ground. The present collection provides a fascinating glimpse of life in Vladivostok during this volatile moment in Russian history as well as a notable instance when American and Allied gunboat diplomacy utterly failed. unknown
