He studied at the National Preparatory School and later at the National Museum of Archaeology Ethnography and History. In the National Autonomous University of Mexico UNAM worked as chief investigator in the Mezquital Valley Hidalgo state and then as director of the Institute for Social Research. He worked for the National Polytechnic Institute and head of the Laboratory of Anthropology and later became director of the Institute of Economic Research. During the administration of President Lazaro Cardenas 1934-1940 he served as advisor to the Department of Indian Affairs and director of the Workers' University. His work scattered in journals was published in six volumes under the title Collected Works 1946. He also published An Essay on the American native civilizations The Nahua chronology The evolution of the indigenous cultures of Mexico and the division of labor The evolution of northwestern Mexico Mining and Mexican metallurgy Four problems of indigenous and Agricultural developments Mezquital Valley among others. Kemper born in San Diego California on November 21 1945 resided in Dallas Texas where he was Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1971 from the University of California at Berkeley and spent the academic year 1971-1972 there as a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in Mexican American Studies before joining the SMU faculty. At SMU he served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology President of the Faculty Senate and member of the University Board of Trustees. His research interests included migration and urbanization history of anthropology community development tourism Mexico and the United States. His numerous publications include Anthropologists in Cities 1974 Migration and Adaptation: Tzintzuntzan Peasants in Mexico City 1977 Migration Across Frontiers: Mexico and the United States 1979 Chronicling Cultures: Long-Term Field Research in Anthropology 2002 and Urban Life 5th ed. 2010. Each leaf bears an arrangement sometimes occupying most of the page sometimes a portion of it of Hartmann's characteristic symbols including recurrent stylized fish. A number of the individual leaves are dated in September demonstrating that Hartmann's work on this undertaking spanned a number of weeks. Laid in is a photo postcard of the artist. Rare sepia printed example of a superb Edward Borein print signed and with a pencil drawn remarque.<br/> <br/>Edward Borein 1872-1945 was born near San Francisco. He showed a very early talent for drawing which developed with very little training. He spent a number of years working as a cowboy throughout the southwest and Mexico sketching at the same time. His career as an artist evolved beginning with magazine illustrations and going on to more ambitious oil and watercolor paintings. He spent a number of years in New York City where he met Charles Russell and Will Rogers then returned to California based in Santa Barbara as of 1921. By this time he was working largely in etching a method he perfected always working with cowboys Indians and the West as his subject matter. This fine sepia printed etching of the Navajo is especially desirable because of its setting in Oraibi an ancient continuously inhabited Hopi town in Navajo County Arizona in the northeastern portion of the state. The etching is unusual too for the mild psychological drama evoked: the four Navajo riders face in various directions as if they were uncomfortable or uncertain none is actually looking at the village and one is prepared to ride away.<br/> <br/>Galvin 210. unknown books

006222Hardcover. Very Good. Mock-up manuscript for an unpublished children's book manuscript. N.d. circa 1930. Oblong 25 by 38 cm. 15 pages of illustrated text following the manuscript cover. In addition there are three matted illustrations of the semi-abstract animal motives found on the front cover. It is unknown with any certainty why this immensely charming and very professional manuscript was never published. It is our conjecture that the manuscript was submitted early in the Depression when publishers were cutting back on the children's book list and especially color illustrated books both because of the economic straits they were suffering like virtually every industry in the American economy and more specifically perhaps changes in the marketplace for children's books with some shift of buying from families to public libraries with a subsequent drop in overall sales as a result. Nonetheless this manuscript was intended by Bull to be published as on the back cover there is a label indicated that the manuscript had been submitted by Fred A. Wish Inc. presumably Bull's literary agent. The book is a small collection of nonsense verses about animals around a house -- cats dogs mice chickens ducks. Each of the poems runs one to two pages and is accompanied by one to five illustrations with the text and illustrations pasted onto the heavy card stock leaves. Condition: card leaves are detached from spine band. A few minor edge chips to cards. <br/><br/> hardcover books
