8vo., Sixth Edition, endpapers lightly browned, fore-edges lightly dust-soiled; original red cloth, gilt back, very neatly recased with all advertisement endpapers preserved, a very good, clean copy. With 17pp publisher's catalogue on pink stock bound in at front and rear. The compilation of the Manual of Military Law was initiated by Secretary of State for War Stanley in 1879. In order to produce a single comprehensive manual the Rules of Procedure required considerable legal amendment, including the repeal and replacement of the Army Discipline and Regulation Act 1879 by the Army Act 1881. The first edition was approved by both Childers and Hartington and published in 1884. The present edition contains an entirely new chapter on the laws and usages of war, revisions resulting from the Army Reforms of 1908, and (notably) the inclusion for the first time of the Official Secrets Act. It is arguably the most significant single issue, containing as it does the broadest set of amendments stemming from sea changes in service structure and practice. Fortunately it was completed in time for the conflict about to come. COPIES OF THE SIXTH EDITION ARE UNACCOUNTABLY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. A RARE SURVIVAL.

ix, [1], 332 pages. Bibliography. Footnotes. Index. Several maps and reproductions of black and white photos. "The battle for British and world recognition of Canadian independence was fought on the plains of Belgium and France, bought with the blood of almost sixty thousand men and won in the end by the unparalleled achievements of the crack Canadian Corps. That these troops could go from victory to victory in a war best remembered for its bloodshed and defeats testifies to the strength of character and the tactical brilliance of the Corps Commander, Canada's greatest soldier, Sir Arthur William Currie. In this first reappraisal of Currie to appear in over thirty-five years, the author brings to life this giant of a man blessed with courage, intelligence and uncommon common sense, and reveals the true scope of his achievements not only as a solder but as a confidant of four prime ministers and as principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University which he led to its greatest prestige and renown." - from dust jacket.
