Papers from a conference 'War and territory in the Roman world: historical and archaeological approaches', held at Autonomous University of Barcelona, March 8-9, 2005. Thirteen papers from a conference held in Barcelona in 2005 on the subject of 'War and territory in the Roman world: historical and archaeological approaches'. The contributors consider the relationship between the army and society, between the emperor and his army, between warfare and the environment, as well as more specific subjects: the representation of military power; the relationship between local and central power, especially at the frontiers of the empire; imperial administration; changes in imagery on coinage; war and the management of human and material resources. Seven of the papers focus on the Iberian peninsula whilst the rest look towards the empire as a whole. Text in English, Spanish, French and Italian. ; British Archaeological Reports BAR International Series 1530; 262 pages

The 51st (Highland) Division was one of the finest units of the regular army at the outbreak of war. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. Elephant folio. (59x75 cm). In Ottoman script. [OTTOMAN MILITARY MAP of PATAGONIA and FALKLAND ISLANDS: ROUTE of DRESDEN] Alman kruvazörü Dresden'in takîbi ve tahrîbi. SMS Dresden cruiser's routes between 1913-1915 (World War 1) on the Patagonian shelf; western shores of South America, Patagonia and Falkland Islands. Dresden spent much of her career overseas. After commissioning, she visited the United States in 1909 during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, before returning to Germany to serve in the reconnaissance force of the High Seas Fleet for three years. In 1913, she was assigned to the Mediterranean Division. She was then sent to the Caribbean to protect German nationals during the Mexican Revolution. In mid-1914, she carried the former dictator Victoriano Huerta to Jamaica, where the British had granted him asylum. She was due to return to Germany in July 1914, but was prevented by the outbreak of World War I from doing so. At the onset of hostilities, Dresden operated as a commerce raider in South American waters in the Atlantic, then moved to the Pacific Ocean in September and joined Maximilian von Spee's East Asia Squadron. Dresden saw action in the Battle of Coronel in November, where she engaged the British cruiser HMS Glasgow, and at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December, where she was the only German warship to escape destruction. She eluded her British pursuers for several more months, until she put into Robinson Crusoe Island in March 1915. Her engines were worn out and she had almost no coal left for her boilers, so the ship's captain contacted the local Chilean authorities to have Dresden interned. She was trapped by British cruisers, including her old opponent Glasgow. The British violated Chilean neutrality and opened fire on the ship in the Battle of Más a Tierra. The Germans scuttled Dresden and the majority of the crew escaped to be interned in Chile for the duration of the war. The wreck remains in the harbor; several artifacts, including her bell and compass, have been returned to Germany.
8vo (210 x 130mm), 18, 13-48, 52-91, 93-140, 133-148, 12, [2]pp., interleaved throughout with blank pages, ex-ministry of Defence Library, cont. calf, rubbed and worn, leather peeled away from boards, joints cracked. Annual Army list to November, 1763. The pagination of this book is erratic to say the least: there are no pages 49, 50 or 51, page 52 follows p. 48, from thence onwards to p. 91 (38th Foot) inclusive, all the odd numbers are on the verso side, there is no page 91, page 93 (39th Foot) follows p. 91, and from thence to p. 140 the pagination is normal, a page numbered 133 (70 Companies of Marines) follows p. 140, and this continues to p. 148, thence follows 12 pages (succession of Colonels) and a final leaf (Additions since Printing). It seems the printer who set up this list, must have been a 'Dreamer'. ESTC (N62475) locates a single copy of this edition at the National Archives.
Single sheet measuring 6.0 x 6.0 ins (approx. 15.0 x15.0 cms), on blank stationery, and dated 18 June 1997; near fine state. THE LETTER IS WRITTEN, DATED AND SIGNED ENTIRELY IN 'PIP' GARDNER'S HAND, AND IS SOLD WITH A POOR QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT. Philip John 'Pip' Gardner was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 10 February 1942. The citation reads: 'On 23 November 1931 at Tobruk, Libya, Captain Gardner took two tanks to the rescue of two armoured cars of the King's Dragoon Guards, which were out of action and under heavy attack. Whilst one tank gave covering fire the captain dismounted from the other, hitched a tow rope to one of the cars, then lifted into it an officer, both of whose legs had been blown off. The tow rope broke, so Captain Gardner returned to the armoured car, but was immediately wounded in the arm and leg. Despite this he managed to transfer the wounded man to the second tank and returned to British lines through intense shell-fire'. Philip John 'Pip' Gardner (1914-2003) was serving with 4RTR in 32nd Tank Brigade during Operation CRUSADER, designed to destroy the bulk of Rommel's armour and force him to abandon his siege of Tobruk.
Two sheets each measuring 8.0 x 6.0 ins (approx. 21.0 x 15.0 cms), on printed stationery from Porteous' home near Chichester, and dated 17 September 1995; near fine state. THE LETTER IS WRITTEN, SIGNED AND DATED ENTIRELY IN PORTEOUS' HAND, AND IS SOLD WITH A BRIEF RESUME OF HIS SERVICE CAREER AND A POOR QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT. Patrick Porteous was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 2 October 1942. The citation reads: 'On 19 August 1942 at Dieppe, France, Captain Porteous was liaison officer between two detachments whose task was to attack the heavy coast defence guns. During the initial assault Captain Porteous, with the smaller detachment was shot through the hand, but he nevertheless disarmed and killed his assailant, thereby also saving the life of a British sergeant. In the meantime the two officers of the other detachment had been killed and the Troop Sergeant Major seriously wounded, so Captain Porteous, in the face of witherin fire, dashed across open ground to take command and led the men in a successful charge against the enemy, when he was severely wounded for the second time. He continued to the final objective, however, but eventually collapsed after the last gun had been destroyed'. Captain (later Colonel) Patrick Anthony Porteous (1918-2000) was commissioned in the Royal Regiment of Artillery and served at Dieppe with Lord Lovat's Fourth Commando. He ended the war with 1 Airborne Division and subsequently completed a distinguished military career as Commander, Rheindalen Garrison of BAOR.
Single sheet measuring 8.0 x 6.5 ins (approx. 20.0 x 17.0 cms), on stationery of 53 (W) Divisional Dinner Club printed in red and black, and dated 20 November 1995; near fine state. THE LETTER IS WRITTEN, DATED AND SIGNED ENTIRELY IN SIR TASKER'S HAND, AND IS SOLD WITH A BRIEF RESUME OF HIS POST-WAR CAREER AND A POOR QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT. Sir Tasker Watkins was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 2 November 1944. The citation reads: 'On 16 August 1944 at Barfour, Normandy, Lieutenant Watkins' company came under murderous machine-gun fire while advancing through corn fields set with booby traps. The only officer left, Lieutenant Watkins led a bayonet charge with his 30 remaining men against 50 enemy infantry, practically wiping them out. Finally, at dusk, separated from the rest of the battalion, he ordered his men to scatter and after he had personally charged and silenced an enemy machine-gun post, he brought them back to safety. His superb leadership not only saved his men, but decisively influenced the course of the battle'. Sir Tasker Watkins (1918-2007) was commissioned into the Welch Regiment in 1941 and was the first Welshman to win the Victoria Cross in WWII. He retired from the Army as a major in 1946 and entered the law. He was called to the bar in 1948 at the beginning of a distinguished legal career that culminated in his serving as Deputy Chief Justice of England from 1988-1993. He was knighted in 1971 and appointed a CBE in 1990. Watkins was President of the 53 (W) Divisional Dinner Club.

Bumping to bottom corners, still in publisher's plastic. ; History of Warfare, 46; 1 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 481 pages; This is the second update of A Cumulative Bibliography of Medieval Military History and Technology, which appeared in 2002. It is meant to do two things: to present references to works on medieval military history and technology not included in the first two volumes; and to present references to all books and articles published on medieval military history and technology from 2003 to 2006. These references are divided into the same categories as in the first two volumes and cover a chronological period of the same length, from late antiquity to 1648, again in order to present a more complete picture of influences on and from the Middle Ages. It also continues to cover the same geographical area as the first and second volume, in essence Europe and the Middle East, or, again, influences on and from this area. The languages of these bibliographical references reflect this geography.
