19855617San Francisco: Presidio Army Museum 1985. Three photographically-illustrated posters printed in red and black each 20 x 16 inches. Very minor edge wear and toning. Near fine. A visually appealing trio of posters celebrating the military service of Filipino Americans during World War II created for an exhibition at the Presidio Army Museum in San Francisco in the summer of 1985. The exhibition was titled "Forgotten Heroes: An Exhibit Honoring the Filipino Americans Who Served in the United States Army 1898-1945." Each poster pictures a different unit of Filipino U.S. Army soldiers with experience in the Second World War as follows: a group of infantry soldiers identified as part of the "Defense of Bataan and Corregidor;" eight members of Company E of the 57th U.S. Infantry Filipino Scouts; and the four soldiers comprising the Color Guard of the 1st Filipino U.S. Infantry Regiment in 1942. The first two posters cary the same title "Forgotten Heroes" while the latter poster is titled "'Bahala Na!' 'Come What May!' The Story of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments in the United States Army" perhaps a smaller display within the larger exhibition. No copies in OCLC though we doubt the posters are unique perhaps residing in larger collections of Filipino American material. Presidio Army Museum unknown

140779Very Good. A commercial photograph album 225 × 320 mm containing 163 snapshot photographs mainly 57 × 70 mm or 64 × 90 mm loosely mounted behind photo-corners on 24 leaves mainly on the rectos with captions regularly throughout the album. A postcard-format studio portrait of the compiler is attached to the front pastedown and he has identified himself in a number of photographs. In one snapshot he is standing with former German Olympic boxer Hans Schönrath 1902-1945 who has signed the photograph in ink. Cord-bound boards covered with coarsely-woven multi-coloured fabric; extremities a little rubbed and bumped with minor wear to some corners; patterned tissue-guards occasionally chipped and torn; minimal signs of age and use including a few loose snapshots - and only a handful appear to be no longer present; overall in excellent condition. The portrait has a personal inscription on the verso unfortunately not fully identifying the subject. The snapshots are basically in chronological order with the first group captioned 'R.A.D. 1937'. 'The Reichsarbeitsdienst RAD or National Empire Labour Service had its origins with the formation of a volunteer labour force that was created to off-set the high unemployment before the Nazis came to power. Work camps were set up to house these volunteers sponsored by the government administration in 1931. Under Hitler's leadership service in the RAD was obligatory for all males of 17-25 years of age for a period of six months from 26 June 1935' Imperial War Museum. Next follows a period of military training at Neuhammer; a number of photographs in this part of the album suggest the young man may have had training as a chef. There are about 40 photographs of the young man working or training in camps in barracks or at ease.
The majority of the photographs depict the unstoppable and destructive course of the German army as it embarks on the occupation of Czechoslovakia fortifications captured tanks and aircraft military parades in the presence of Herman Goering and Sudetenland the invasion of Poland deployed troops destroyed or burning buildings demoralised civilians and more military parades and finally the invasion of France massive destruction of buildings fortifications bridges French aircraft and tanks; a crashed Messerschmitt Bf 109; captured British soldiers. unknown

All text in Japanese with some obsolete/antiquated kana/kanji oriented right to left. This is a privately-issued commemorative yearbook-type photo album shashin-cho published on behalf of the Imperial Japanese Army medical forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945. Specifically it was produced for those who served under military physician captains/commanding officers Nobuo Isa and Tetsuo Fukaya who were stationed in or near Shanghai at the time.

By July 1939 the Imperial Japanese Army was beginning to feel the impact of its own mounting casualties and costs; the Chinese Red Army would launch a major offensive later that November. While the Japanese occupation of Shanghai was notably brutal there is little evidence of violence in this album. However some photographs do depict the aftermath of battle with ruined buildings and soldiers being treated for injuries. Other subjects are mundane in nature: Staff and group portraits hospitals and other facilities physicians at work company events and ceremonies. Also includes photographs of Shanghai and a fold-out map of the Hangzhou Bay area. Apparently not cataloged in OCLC or available commercially as of November 2019. Nishimura Company unknown

The legion surrendered to Octavian after the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE losing its prestigious name Equestris as punishment and receiving veterans from other legions which earned it the cognomen "Gemina" twin. After service in the Cantabrian Wars and brief deployments to various frontier posts the legion was sent to Carnuntum a fortress on the Danube between current day Vienna and Bratislava in about 61 CE where it remained vigilant against Germanic threats. Following participation in Trajan's Second Dacian War the legion moved twice more first to Aquincum Budapest in 103 CE then finally to Vindobona Vienna in 114 CE where they remained stationed defending the Danube frontier until the 5th century though vexillationes were periodically sent for campaigns in Judaea Mauritania and Parthia.

Red clay bricks like these were a common building material in Roman architecture from about the time of Augustus and making bricks was among the chores for Roman soldiers during their down time. unknown
