This account traces each stage of the critical struggle between the Persian Empire and the early Greek states, from the first clashes to the miraculous return home of 10,000 Greek mercenaries stranded in the heart of Persia. Carefully examined sources and placing events within their geographical and historical contexts, the author attempts to define cultural and political differences between the two peoples. His balanced, questioning approach places fresh emphasis on the Persian perspective and will provide an accessible and informed introduction to the period. ; Classical World Series; 101 pages
Light tanning to pages. Faint crease to ffep. DJ has very minor shelfwear. ; “This study explores a neglected aspect of history: the precautions upon which depended the existence of city-states, great and small, and even of a few rustic communities. Social as well as political stresses impelled the ancient Greeks to build innumerable fortifications of astonishing diversity; the book refers, merely for points of special interest, to hundreds of remains still visible in the homeland, many along the Turkish and the Italian coasts, and some in countries as remote as Spain and Afghanistan. ”; 552 pages

Small stain to top of textblock. Minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; Weapons of biological and chemical warfare have been in use for thousands of years, and Greek Fire, Poison Arrows & Scorpion Bombs, Adrienne Mayor's exploration of the origins of controversial weaponry, draws extraordinary connections between the mythical worlds of Hercules and the Trojan War, the accounts of Herodotus and Thucydides, and modern methods of war and terrorism. Drawing on sources ancient and modern, Mayor describes ancient recipes for arrow poisons, booby traps rigged with plague, petroleum-based combustibles, choking gases, and the deployment of dangerous animals and venomous snakes and insects. She also explores the ambiguous moral implications inherent in this kind of warfare: Are these nefarious forms of weaponry ingenious or cowardly? Admirable or reprehensible? ; 319 pages
224 pages; This book provides a detailed picture of the life of these Greek mercenaries, analyzing who they were and from what section of society they came. It explores their motivations, their relationships and connections, both with each other and those with whom they served, and shows how mercenaries were recruited, paid and maintained. Matthew Trundle reviews a variety of evidence, including Xenophon's detailed account of how over ten thousand Greeks tried and failed to establish the Persian prince Cyrus on his brother's Imperial throne, the fragments of a fourth century play about the first ever soldier of fortune, and inscriptions prohibiting Athenians from taking service with their neighbours. The result is a fresh look at the significance of mercenaries in ancient Greek society, economy and politics, and their part in the process that shaped the great Empire of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic world.

Bump to upper rear corner. Small chip to base of spine. ; This book aims at presenting military gromatic information from the only extent ancient author writing on those questions, ps. Hyginus (IIIth A. C. ) who wrote a work about metatio (land distribution to the troops of the Roman army). Several scholars studied this book until very recently, but generally misunderstood vital points. The present edition an Italian translation mainly studies linguistic questions in order to reassess the debated points: the groma’s dispositioning according to the symmetry; the right and left side of a camp’s map; the distribution of troops within the camp; the disposition of cohortes legionariae in front and of some troops in the central part of the camp; finally the fortifications in the form of a quarter of a cylinder (claviculae) , built out of the wall starting from the jamb of the four doors, and a small excavation next each of them (titulum). The present book studies the original text and meaning of the de metatione castrorum by proposing a new restitution and a critical apparatus, a translation, an exhaustive preface with explanations about linguistic and textual problems, a commentary, a chapter about the historical evolution of the text from the first edition to the present one and by a Tabula discrepantium. ; Collection Latomus Volume 339; 269 pages; Isbn: 9782870312857.
