Faint creasing to 1 corner of wraps. ; The study of Greek warfare should involve much more than reconstructing the experience of combat or revisiting the great wars of the classical period. Here, a distinguished international cast of scholars explores beyond the usual thematic and chronological boundaries. Ranging from the heroes of Homer to the kings and cities of the Hellenistic age, the contributors set war in the context of other forms of Greek violence, private and public. At every turn they challenge received ideas about the causes and conduct of war, its development and its place in Greek society and culture. ; 320 pages; Isbn: 1905125348
Papers from a conference 'War and territory in the Roman world: historical and archaeological approaches', held at Autonomous University of Barcelona, March 8-9, 2005. Thirteen papers from a conference held in Barcelona in 2005 on the subject of 'War and territory in the Roman world: historical and archaeological approaches'. The contributors consider the relationship between the army and society, between the emperor and his army, between warfare and the environment, as well as more specific subjects: the representation of military power; the relationship between local and central power, especially at the frontiers of the empire; imperial administration; changes in imagery on coinage; war and the management of human and material resources. Seven of the papers focus on the Iberian peninsula whilst the rest look towards the empire as a whole. Minor shelfwear else Fine; Leicester-Nottingham Studies in Ancient Society; 0.88 x 8.5 x 5.5 Inches; 328 pages; The essays in War and Society in the Roman World collectively offer an innovative investigation into this area of classical studies, a field which has long been in need of different critical perspectives. This collection avoids rehashing the minutiae of warfare, viewing it instead as a species of social action, affected by social conditions and ideologies, and having social, economic and cultural consequences. The central theme of this volume is the shifting relationship between warfare and the Roman citizen body. The dominant role of war in Roman life under the Republic is examined, together with the related themes of Roman expansion and its consequences both for the Romans and for those they conquered. Under the principate, expansion largely ended, and the inhabitants of the empire enjoyed the Roman peace, protected by a professional army. A number of chapters focus on these changes, explaining how they came about, analyzing their effect on attitudes to war and probing the extent to which peace was a reality. The final chapters study the Late Empire in terms of the rise of warlords and, in the West, the final disappearance of the Roman army.
