The recipient Lord Dickinson Sir Willoughby Dickinson 1859-1943 was a Liberal and then Labour politician and early advocate of the League of Nations.1p 4to. In fair condition lightly aged and creased with short nick to one edge. Folded twice. He thanks him for the morning’s note and is ‘adopting your suggestion to put down a Motion in the Lords’. He hopes that Dickinson will ‘add the weight of your name and influence in a letter to the Times’. He would like ‘the League of Nations Union would take the matter up’. The question is one ‘in which British honour is involved and not merely one regarding Kenya settlers’ and ‘the more wide-spread the support’ which the matter receives the better. 5 January 1933. 22048The first of the four letters on letterhead of Little Parkhurst Abinger Common Nr Dorking Surrey; the other three without place. One from 1940 two from 1941 one from 1943. The recipient Simon Nicholson was a colonial civil servant and a neighbour of Lugard at Tallboys in Abinger Hammer. He and his wife Molly were a cultured couple and were friends of Edith Wharton and Bernard Berenson. The four letters are in good condition lightly aged and worn and each is 2pp 12mo. Each folded once. The first three are signed 'Lugard' and the last to Molly Nicholson 'Fred Lugard'. In the first letter 23 September 1940 after expressing pleasure at seeing Nicholson again and having 'a talk' he begs him 'not to postpone your week-end here. Molly needs it – badly – She did not say so – quite the contrary but I did not need to be told.' He asks him to come the following Saturday adding: 'You can bring papers & have the drawing-room to yourself.' He asks to be informed 'as much in advance as is convenient as I may have Reg Brackenbury & his wife any week-end'. Lugard's brother 'was disappointed that you forgot to hand me some papers you had for him'. The second letter 21 March 1941 concerns arrangements for a meeting with Lugard stating that 'it is a monstrous long time since I have seen you'. He also expresses regret that Nicholson is 'selling Tallboys'. The third letter 9 May 1941 begins: 'My brother & I are both delighted to hear that you are coming back to Tallboys & selfishly hope that you will continue to fail in your attempts to sell it. If Little Parkhurst can be of any use to you in the transition don't fail to make use of it.' He has 'been much engrossed with Abyssinia of late' and looks forward to talking to Nicholson about it. In a postscript he names two individuals who 'are coming “to talk over old timesâ€'. In the final letter to Molly 22 January 1943 he regrets that it is so long since he has seen her and her husband 'for though so comparatively close the lack of petrol has as you say placed a gulf between us. Simon wrote me a most welcome letter from his office & I enclose this little note to you in my reply.' He find the 'news from Russia … very cheering - & wonderful' and does not suppose it will be 'very long now before our turn comes to face the Nazis in Europe'. He ends in the hope that 'some obliging friend' will give the Nicholsons 'a lift over'. Inscribed on laid paper water-marked "OCR" a mark not found in Gravell. This pair of letters from General Philip Schuyler to Major Yates contains orders for the troops including preparations and various actions to be undertaken in the field issued in late June the week before the Siege of Fort Ticonderoga the first week of July 1777. The 1777 Siege of Fort Ticonderoga occurred between July second and sixth 1777 near the southern end of Lake Champlain in the state of New York. Lieutenant General John Burgoyne's 8000-man army occupied high ground above the fort and nearly surrounded the defenses. These movements forced the occupying Continental Army an under-strength force of 3000 under the command of General Arthur St. Clair to withdraw from Ticonderoga and the surrounding defenses. Some gunfire was exchanged and there were some casualties but there was no formal siege and no pitched battle. Burgoyne's army occupied Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence the extensive fortifications on the Vermont side of the lake without opposition on 6 July. Advance units pursued the retreating Americans. The uncontested surrender of Ticonderoga caused an uproar in the American public and in its military circles as Ticonderoga was widely believed to be virtually impregnable and a vital point of defense. General St. Clair and his superior General Philip Schuyler were vilified by Congress. Both were eventually exonerated in courts martial but their careers were adversely affected. Schuyler had already lost his command to Horatio Gates by the time of the court martial and St. Clair held no more field commands for the remainder of the war. Please to send the Letter to General St. Clair by the first Boat together with the Horses which the Bearer will deliver you to be forwarded to General Fermois. Bloomfield 'somewhat more than a year ago' laid 'before the Prince Regent at Sudbourne Hall two small productions' of Hall's and he now wishes 'as they are my mite to the good of my Country Cottage poems also to be laid before him'. He feels that the 'concluding little poem' in the collection 'cannot displease his Royal Highness'. Phoebe Hessel or Hassel born Smith March 1713-December 12 1821 is renowned for masquerading as a man to join the British Army enlisting in the 5th Regiment of Foot to fight alongside her partner. She remained undetected as a soldier for 17 years serving as a soldier in both the West Indies and Gibraltar and both she and her lover participated in the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745 where Phoebe sustained a bayonet injury to her arm. She passed away on December 12 1821 at the age of 108 and was interred in the graveyard of St Nicholas Church in Brighton. She was occasionally called the 'Stepney Amazon'. Amazon Street and Hessel Street named in her honor still exist in Stepney now part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. This wood engraving on a single sheet with a likely contemporary or near so handwritten caption measures approx. 15.5 cms x 19cms with the image approx 8 x 8 cms. Japanese AmericanWWII Japanese American military service and postwar life photograph archive documenting Nisei participation in the United States armed forces and the reintegration of Japanese American families into public life after World War II 1940s-1960s. The photographs capture Japanese Americans in military uniform as well as family gatherings and civilian travel throughout wartime incarceration and postwar recovery and reintegration. The images document the lives of a generation of Nisei soldiers who served in units such as the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service whose wartime service occurred while more than 120000 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed and incarcerated under Executive Order 9066. The archive encapsulates the complex relationship between patriotic service and racial discrimination during WWII and the reintegration of Japanese Americans into civilian life during the mid twentieth century.<br /> <br /> Archive of 12 black and white photographs produced between the 1940s and 1960s. The images range in size from approximately 2 x 3 inches to 3.5 x 5 inches and include several photographs of Japanese American men in United States military uniform. Other photographs depict Japanese American families posed together in domestic and social settings including women dressed in fashionable postwar clothing typical of the 1950s. A small group of photographs shows Japanese American visitors standing in front of the United States Capitol building in Washington D.C. Several photographs bear numbers dates or personal names written on the verso in both Japanese and English.<br /> <br /> Japanese American military service during World War II was a central element in the broader struggle for Asian American civil rights after the war. Nisei soldiers serving in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service played significant roles in combat operations in Europe and in intelligence translation work in the Pacific theater. At the same time their families and communities endured forced removal and incarceration under federal wartime policy. In the decades following the war Japanese American families rebuilt social networks reestablished businesses and professions and increasingly participated in civic life across the United States. Photographs documenting travel to symbolic national locations such as the United States Capitol reflect this period of renewed public presence and political engagement among Japanese Americans in the 1950s and 1960s.
