Etched and engraved title 24 pages a single 12-leaf quire A 16-page calendar for 1785 bound in middle of quire 12 etched and engraved “plates†printed on 6 conjugate bifolia rule page borders throughout one or two borders shaved. A fine copy in a contemporary case binding of embroidered ivory faille silk over binders’ boards both covers with a central wheat sheaf of couched purl and vermeil sequins in a pot of green threads symmetrical purl ribbons and sprays above and below the ground with small green flowers and sequin accents double outer border of sequins and intertwining metallic thread spine with saltire design of metallic thread and sequins salmon watered silk doublures with hammered vermeil ribbon borders framing a mirror on the upper cover and on the lower cover a pocket free endpapers of pink on gold brocade paper printed on one side only gilt edges. Outer corner of front cover very slightly stained and fraying a ribbon border inside lower cover detaching the mirror intact but its tin backing turned to powder and shedding slightly through the spine. <br /> <br /> A delightful almanac in a fetching embroidered binding which expresses the golden sun of the harvest abundance and joy. In pictures and verse this almanach galant relates love’s approaches evasions and eventual conquest using an extended military metaphor. Hence captions like “the diligent vigil the gracious combat marauding cupids a lucky rally the double attack the capitulation†etc. grace the hardly warlike images. The women in petticoats ribbons and flowery hats wear the latest fashions.<br /> <br /> In an unusual modern touch the image of the etched title showing a couple in a boat with a fortress and galleon in the background continues behind the title lettering. The engraved illustrations of courting and sometimes modestly contorting couples are in dark vivid impressions. In this copy unlike the Grand-Carteret copy the sixth and seventh plates were printed on the same sheet in the wrong order and thus the captions are mismatched. <br /> <br /> The embroidered cover of the binding was applied slightly awry on the lower cover.<br /> <br /> OCLC lists the BnF copy only. Très rare exemplaire en coloris d'époque de cette rare édition qu'Henry Cohen (Cohen, 11) donne en 1778 et pour laquelle il indique 15 figures gravées par Voysard, d'après les dessins de Bérainville. Notre exemplaire en possède moins, même si l'ouvrage est entièrement gravé. En revanche, un exemplaire proposé par Susanne Schulz-Falster rare books (février 2013, catalogue n°10, n°28) contenait 9 gravures comme le nôtre (mais avec un volume construit différemment et dont les gravures ont été laissées en noir). Les 16 feuillets ne sont imprimés que d'un côté (chaque figure face au texte). Composition de notre exemplaire : -Frontispice gravé par Voysard, colorié à l'époque. -Titre gravé, colorié à l'époque. -2 feuillets, dédicace de Person de Bérainville au Roi. -Gravure, coloriée à l'époque, face à une page de texte « Avenement de Louis XVI au Throne, le 10 mai 1774 ». With an engraved emblematic frontispiece in each volume 18 folding engraved maps plans and views and 18 full-page engraved plates. 11 volumes. With the 1777 volume included twice. The second volume in contemporary beige printed wrappers with the coat of arms of Zeeland with the title on the front and the coat of arms of Middelburg with the imprint on the back. Rare near complete set of the famous Zeeland almanac which taught children the history of their province in a playful way by means of questions and answers. Zeelands chronyk-almanach was published from 1777 to 1792 with each volume focussing on a separate aspect of Zeeland such as geography the cities religion or the government. Also added to each volume is a part of a continuing extensive chronicle of Zeeland usually illustrated with folding plates. Present here are the volumes for 1777-1780 1785-1788 1790 and 1791-1792. The first volumes were published by Jan Dane but P. Gilissen took over after his death. The final volume which contains a summary of the chronicle published in the other volumes and a separate part with poems and short stories was published by W. A. Keel. The work further include a calendar information on the tides the times of the closing of the gates in the various towns of the province the dates of holidays and markets the times of departure of the ferries the magistrate in the various towns and the value of the various coins.The binding of the 1787 volume has been rubbed and the joints are somewhat weakened the bindings of the other volumes with only minor traces of use. The leaves are slightly browned and occasionally soiled or frayed some folding illustrations with false folds. A rare issue of the Madras almanac a landmark in the history of British-Indian colonial printing before the Mutiny in 1857. Styled on European almanacs it is a great source of information on India and especially Madras in the years 1827-1829. The tradition of preparing and printing almanacs in India was quite new. The Madras almanac first printed in 1799 and initially called the Madras register and later until its demise in 1935 the Asylum Press almanac gives not only useful community information such as birth and death rates for 1827-1828 and domestic events but also offers glimpses into the British colonial and native Indian politics in India and the officers involved at that time. It therefore provided much important information for the British Indian colonists. Of special practical importance are the information and conversion tables for money weights and measures and also the tables of roads from Madras to principal towns and military stations in the region. The Madras Almanac a practical guide for the British-Indian colonist in 1829 now provides us with a window into Madras society in the period 1827 to 1829.The original sheepskin rubbed and the later paper covering it chipped corners bumped. These local vade mecums annual publications produced using local materials are inevitably uncommon on the market. Although substantial at around 700 pages they have a low survival rate. That they were retained after their supersession is demonstrated by the fact that this copy has the presentation inscription dated in 1849 of the Massachusetts-born missionary and educator of Ceylon Revd Daniel Poor to the title page. Compendious covering the civil military and religious establishments including salaries; the legal administration; professional regulations including those for palankeen bearers; post office regulations and charges; ship arrivals and departures; births deaths marriages and estates probated within the presidency; this is an excellent source of reference for the understanding of the nature of the British administration in India. Octavo 225 x 148 mm. 3 hand-coloured plates of signal flags based upon Marryat's system. Contemporary sheep on marbled boards skilfully rebacked to style with the original label laid down. Slightly rubbed on the boards part of front free endpaper neatly excised typically somewhat browned and consequently brittle in the margins but overall a very good copy sensitively restored. hardcover

Each page printed in simple woodcut border with several small head and tailpieces. 40 ll. Only known copy of a beautifully bound French almanach for the year 1763 accompanied by many popular songs. The survival of the present almanach is extremely rare as we have not been able to trace any other copy from the same year and only one set of similar almanachs for the years 1757-1762 at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The present work is a charming miniature almanac which contains - besides the usual calendar for the year 1763 - several songs mainly love songs but also bacchic songs and "les plaisirs de la critique". The last three pages contain a bookseller's catalogue of other contemporary French almanachs.The title page and the last page show some slight colour offsetting of the pastedowns some occasional minor foxing. Otherwise in very good condition.l This edition not in Grand-Carteret; STCN; WorldCat; cf. WorldCat 470104514 a set of the same almanachs for the years 1757-1762 at the BnF. unknown

180519106Paris: Chez Janet 1805. Contemporary gold-tooled straight-grained red morocco spine decoratively gilt decorative double borders on both boards gilt edges brocade endpapers. 32mo. With 12 full-page engraved plates showing young people talking playing and courting. Exceptionally rare edition of this charming almanac for 1805 and 1806 with a calendar for one and a half year running from September 1805 to December 1806. This was done because the work followed after almanacs that used the French Republican Calendar 1793-1805 which ran from September to September instead of from January to December. Other than the calendar the almanac includes educational songs on friendship silence family and various emotions set to popular tunes and illustrated with 12 engraved plates. Together this was intended as a "School for adolescents" teaching young people about courting and various types of relationships. On the last page the eclipses of the sun and moon for 1806 are listed including those not visible in Europe. The almanac was also published for the years 1807 1808 and 1809 but all editions are very scarce today. We have only been able to find one other copy of the present 1805/1806 edition in sales records but it has not mentioned in any of the literature nor has it been recorded in institutions.With a contemporary annotation in Dutch on the first free flyleaf "Tis niet genoeg te beminen! maar best eerst wel te vezinnen!". The head of the spine has been bumped a round black stain on the back board. The work has been bound into one quire instead of two causing errors in the pagination. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf.
