Embroidered binding of ivory silk covers with metallic ribbon border enclosing oval cartouche of leafy branches alternating with roundels of sequin and purl enclosing on upper cover a bow arrow and quiver with flowering sprig and on lower cover a flowering plant both embroidered in variously colored threads and sequins; pink satin liners gilt edges. Losses to metallic borders and to some threads of cover designs. Bookplate of Carlo de Poortere.<br /><br />A charming almanac with 12 engravings and in an embroidered binding unknown to Grand-Carteret. This is a typical production of Pierre-Etienne Janet who in 1789 acquired the shop and bindery of his father-in-law Pierre Jubert relieur-doreur and path-breaking almanac publisher. In around 1790 Janet set up shop in the rue St. Jacques and began systematically publishing almanacs most with 12 plates. As usual for the Jubert and early Janet almanacs this little book was built up from "nested quires." In a formula that both repeated often the fold-out letterpress traditional calendar folds around the outside; next is the engraved title with conjugate stub then a 6-leaf unsigned letterpress quire with the Republican calendar for l'An IX starting with Vendémiaire Sept. 1800 which encloses 12 bifolia i.e. 24 leaves of engraved text and illustrations in which each text bifolium alternates with an illustrated bifolium. The illustrated bifolia are printed on one side only; thus 6 plates that appear before the fold are all printed on the versos while the 6 plates following the fold are on the rectos. At the center of all is an unpaginated 12-leaf letterpress quire signed "A" containing lyrics for songs titled "Ariettes nouvelles."<br /><br />Not in Grand-Carteret. Hinges weak and almost broken and the front. At the inside of the binding the wood is visible which is used as the front and back. In -24. 75 x 5 cm. Only one copy in STCN. Text in Dutch. Pages printed partly in red and black ink.With 5 white note pages prepared paper to write and delete writings or drawings and 5 normal laid paper note pages. The erasable pages have scribbles: <em>menig</em> drawing of a house upside down Pietre M D. Het leer is over houten platten heen gezet. Hout goed zichtbaar aan de binnenzijde. Pagina's gedeeltelijk gedrukt met rode en zwarte inkt. 17832047<p>24mo pp. viii 4-8 10-11 13-14 16-17 19-46 48-49 51-52 54-55 57-58 60-61 8; with twelve engraved plates; title-page entirely engraved; some light spotting in places but largely clean and fresh; in contemporary boards elaborately decorated in gilt and gouache depicting a vase of flowers preserved in the original slipcase; binding somewhat rubbed and foot of case loose but still a very attractive copy.</p><p>A lovely copy of this very rare almanac for the year 1783 comprising both a calendar and a collection of songs for each month with each illustrated with a plate by the painter François-Marie-Isidor Queverdo 1748-1797 engraved by his frequent collaborator Jean Dambrun 1744-c. 1814.</p><p>Cohen/De Ricci p. 47 for the 1784 edition; OCLC records only one copy of this year at Vassar College.</p><p>The texts range from drinking songs to erotic rounds to songs extolling the delights of hunting and fishing and finishes with a page detailing the various Almanac offerings of Boulanger 'Doreur sur Cuir et sur Soie'.</p> Chez Boulanger

The present edition of the NORTH-AMERICAN CALENDAR. is most notable for its inclusion of the complete Articles of Confederation which had passed into law upon Maryland's agreement to ratify on March 1 1781. Published by Benjamin West noted astronomer and founder of what was to become the NEW ENGLAND ALMANAC produced on Providence's first printing press in 1762. Although most remembered for his astronomical skills and numerous almanacs West also worked fervently to supply the Continental army with clothes and later served on the faculty of Rhode Island College later Brown University. The first two of the in total three published years of a traveller's almanac each focussing on a different province in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Present here are North- and South-Holland. The third part published a year later was on Utrecht. Apart from the calendars and related information they contain a continuing geographical and historical description of the main cities in these provinces and itinerary information for the routes between these cities with travel times and distances and time-tables for public transportation. They are illustrated with maps views and plans of the town and routes. The present copy also includes blank leaves for annotations.With the bookplate of W.Ch. Roelofsz mounted on the front pastedown and his signature and shelf mark label on the title page. The edges and corners of the boards as well as the spine ends are somewhat scuffed a few scratched on the back board lacking the pencil. Some of the tissue paper guards are slightly foxed. With an engraved title page and 6 full-page engraved plates. 2 works in 1 volume. 2 24 2; 24 pp. Very beautifully produced and illustrated miniature almanac containing a calendar for 1826 and 12 short rhyming songs for children. They are set to the melodies of popular songs of the time which are mentioned at the start. The section with songs the Morale du cur was likely printed separately and could be added to a Calendrier of choice as both parts have their own title page. We have been able to trace two copies of the Morale with a Calendrier for a different year. The 1826 calendar however appears to be very rare as we have not been able to trace any other copies of it in institutions or sales records nor found any mention of it in reference works.The leaves are somewhat browned and foxed. The slipcase is slightly bumped at the bottom. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf.
