17573782Scarce 1758 Almanac with Great F&I War Content
This almanac provides vivid insight into the impact of the French & Indian War on the American colonies. A fiery poetic narrative is carried through at the head of each monthly calendar page. For instance August's verse:

"This Month alas! Proclaims a double Woe

Both 'Swego and Lake George our Losses know;

Fort William-Henry felt the fatal stroke

From faithless Villains. Who their promise broke

False to their Words our Men became their Prey;

And do we yet a just Revenge delay."

Following the calendar pages is a four-page "Continuation of the Historical Account of Affairs in North America…" which provides a summary of military actions from the loss of the fort at Oswego in August 1756 through "the last Day of August 1757 since which we can add no further Intelligence."

Also of significance is a full page devoted to "A short discourse on Comets with some account of that which is expected to appear in the present year 1758." It references Dr. Halley's work and includes this nod to the progress of the science of astronomy: "If therefore this comet return according to this period in 1758 and there is the greatest reason to think it will astronomy will then have something new to boast of." Halley's comet as it is now known did indeed appear on Christmas night 1758.

A rare almanac. RareBookHub notes only one listing: an auction in 1924 for which no price was given. Complete set of the original series of this historical and literary almanac for Zeelandic Flanders mainly edited by Johan Hendrik van Dale 1828-1872 schoolmaster at Sluis whose name has become immortal as the composer of the first scholarly Dutch dictionary: De grote Van Dale. Apart from some traditional elements belonging to the almanac including a preface calendar feast days birthdays of the royal family eclipses tide-tables and market days the volumes contain historical accounts of important regional figures and events descriptions of local legends and short stories and poems from local authors. The first four volumes focus exclusively on Zeelandic Flanders and the final two on all of Zeeland. The plates include views of the tower and town hall at Sluis the Church of St. Bavo at Aardenburg Castle Windenburg in Dreischoor and a portrait of Colonel Joseph Ledel.The fourth volume is of particular interest because it includes the original invoice. The volume was bought from the well-known Amsterdam bookseller Frederik Muller on May 8 1857 by the Dutch Mennonite banker and art collector Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen 1816-1889 because he was particularly interested in the first article of the work on the Mennonite minister Ghysel Hebberecht 17th century.Volume 4 with the original invoice for this volume loosely inserted and the initials of Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen in pencil on the title page a contemporary ownership annotation below the opening plate in volume 5. Some of the boards are slightly browned and stained. The leaves are somewhat browned and occasionally slightly foxed the full-page plate in volume 5 has been mounted onto the leaf. 1820ST20124Paris: Louis Janet ca. 1820s. Necessaire: 120 x 70 mm 4 3/4 x 2 3/4". Calendar: 6 leaves; notebook: 4 leaves.
Red straight-grain morocco lined with green satin containing a calendar in paper wrappers and notebook bound in matching pale green satin. Exterior decorative panel with central painted porcelain scene surrounded by wire filigree and pearls under a glass window. In a later red morocco case by Riviere & Son stamp-signed double ruled in gilt raised bands gilt-ruled compartments. Each calendar page with an engraved vignette. The necessaire additionally containing a pair of scissors with a delicately carved mother-of-pearl handle a silver mechanical pencil a small wooden pencil and an awl a tipped-in early 20th century auction listing not mentioning the latter two suggesting they are possible later additions. The notebook with the engraved bookplate of Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons dated 1908 to the front pastedown. Calendar leaves loose with fore-edges slightly creased other trivial defects but the leaves and binding fresh and quite clean. Nécessaire lightly worn from use with very short split to one tab closure; decorative panel with faint horizontal hairline crack visible only under magnification scattered losses to the paint on the porcelain panel but the fragile object surprisingly well preserved with all its components present.

This charming calendar in a period nécessaire a small case for toiletries or as here personal implements provides a window into the life of a young woman during France’s Bourbon Restoration; wonderfully preserved in a custom Riviere box it was later in an important British collection. Small calendars and almanacs were popular New Years gifts for young French women starting in the late 18th century and by the second decade of the 19th century--when this calendar was likely produced--a thriving industry had grown up around their production. Louis Janet 1788-1840 who was in business as a bookseller and binder from 1810 through 1838 made much of his business in these small almanacs and keepsake books. In our charming almanac each month has an attractive engraving of a Neoclassical scene with graceful women in flowing drapery often accompanied by flitting putti. The nécessaire is similarly decorated: the central panel depicts a young female in a flowing gown leaning over a plinth inscribed with the text: "l’amilie me suffit" "friendship is enough for me". These attractive illustrations together with the contents of the nécessaire suggest its owner was a fashionable young woman. This delightful object is from the collection of David Lionel Salomons 1851-1925 whose books were chosen with notable discrimination the goal always being to obtain copies in very fine condition. The collection was particularly strong in 18th and 19th century illustrated books and attractive bindings. It is very likely given the dates of his collection that he was the owner who commissioned the pleasing Riviere & Son box in which the nécessaire currently resides. Louis Janet unknown

The engraved title and frontispiece varied from year to year up to 1750 after which none were used and the map alternated between an ecclesiastical civil or military map of France or a map of the Paris region. Interleaved and bound with 2 blank leaves at front and 72 at back. Annotated by a contemporary owner with a couple of stray notes on interleaves and a total of 70 pages of manuscript historical notes on the blank leaves at end one blank leaf almost detached. Contemporary plain green parchment over thin pasteboards flat spine large flap extending from lower cover the parchment of the upper cover not attached to upper fore-edge leaving a slot to insert the flap lower free endleaf backed in pasteboard and with folding leather-lined pieces at top and bottom attaching it to lower cover thus forming a wallet or envelope.

Part almanac part blank book this useful volume is bound in a supremely practical wallet binding of a kind that was common once and is no doubt found in large numbers in historical collections but which surfaces rarely in the book trade. The slot in the front cover to insert the folding tab from the lower cover protected the volume from Dutch weather and the lower cover contains a pocket for loose papers or even money.

The Amsterdam comptoir almanacs were issued yearly by successive members of the Stichter printing family from 1728 to the mid-19th century. Unlike their French counterparts these Dutch almanacs were generously proportioned being at least originally intended for the “counters†of merchants and businessmen rather than for gentlemen’s or ladies’ pockets. The calendars were always interleaved and the contents were standard: one page is devoted to each month containing a half-page woodcut above a blank space for notes on the recto and the monthly calendar on the verso. These woodcuts each with a tiny inset astrological sign show indoor and outdoor scenes: ice-sports in December and January a family huddled by the fire with boisterous children in the background in February tree-trimming and pruning in March gardening in April a pastoral scene with lovers in May sheep-shearing in June and so on. The blocks are here quite worn.

Following the calendar are postal and transportation schedules by coach or ship 3 pages of astrological predictions and a short chronicle of the year 1734 someone forgot to update the sheets.

The contemporary reader who used this almanac / notebook and whose hand seems feminine to me was a student of history. The first 16 and 1/2 pages at the beginning of the blank leaves contain a list of Roman emperors. Toward the end of the blank leaves are 32 pages on the succession of the Dukes of Flanders titled “Opvolgengen der Graven von Holland uit het Goudasche Kronyken.â€

Short-Title Catalogue Netherlands 328765627. heirs of the widow of C. Issued in the autumn of 1920 just after the close of the Erste Internationale Dada Messe the Dada Almanach was the first attempt to give an account of the movements international activities at least in Europe. Published on the initiative of Huelsenbeck who was absent from the exhibition.it contained important articles on the theory of Dadaism.valuable statements by the Dada Club and some pages by some less well-known Dadaists such as Walter Mehring You banana-eaters and kayak people! sound and letter poems by Adon Lacroix Man Rays companion in New York not to mention a highly ironical letter by the Dutch Dadaist Paul Citroën dissuading his Dadaist partners from going to Holland. The volume was also distinguished by the French participation of Picabia Ribemont-Dessaignes and Soupault quite unexpected in Berlin; their contributions were presumably collected and sent on from Paris by Tristan Tzara. The latter living in Paris with the Picabias since early January 1920 gave in the Dada Almanach a scrupulous and electrifying account of the doings and publications of the Zürich Dadaists.one of the most dizzying documents in the history of the movement Dachy.
