1899123720Rome: Luigi Mongini 1899-1902. Marx in Italian First edition a bound volume of 12 Italian translations of works by Marx issued by Luigi Mongini in parts each work separately paginated but continuously signed. "1899 would mark a further qualitative leap in the publication of Marx and Engels's texts in Italy reaching a particular peak in the years between 1899 and 1902. This was the most important attempt thus far to provide socialism and Italian culture with the greater part of the works by Marx and Engels that were then available. The publication in instalments of Marx Engels and Lassalle's Works later appearing as a collection thanks to the collaboration of important ancient historian Ettore Ciccotti and socialist publisher Luigi Mongini would doubtless represent 'Italian culture's only true and substantial approach to Marx. until after the Second World War'" Favilli pp. 213-4. It is the first translation of the many translation from the post-war decades in countries with communist government. It even predates the translation into any of the USSR-languages. As World War II ended Romania a former Axis member was occupied by the Soviet Union the sole representative of the Allies. On 6 March 1945 after mass demonstrations by communist sympathizers and political pressure from the Soviet representative of the Allied Control Commission a new pro-Soviet government that included members of the previously outlawed Romanian Workers' Party was installed. Gradually more members of the Communist Party and communist-aligned parties gained control of the administration and pre-war political leaders were steadily eliminated from political life. In December 1947 King Michael was coerced to abdicate and the People's Republic of Romania was declared. The present translation was paid for by the Romanian Communist Party. hardcover

1896187367London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co. 1896. The exploitation of Engels's labour First edition in book form of 19 articles first published in the New York Tribune in 1851-2 on Prussia's response to the revolution of 1848. Marx had been in Prussia in 1848 where he established a revolutionary newspaper and attempted to arrange armed resistance to the monarchy. He was banished in 1849 whereafter he made his way to London. The New York Tribune was among the more sympathetic mainstream outlets with a particular interest in the Utopian Socialist systems of Charles Fourier. Although published exclusively under Marx's byline many of these articles were written by Engels whose grasp of English far exceeded Marx's at this point. This edition was edited by Marx's daughter Eleanor 1855-1898. Octavo. Original red cloth spine ruled lettered and with publisher's device in gilt front board ruled lettered and decorated in black light yellow coated endpapers. Contemporary lithographic bookplate. Light wear minor toning to spine and loss to spine ends inner hinges split but holding firm: a very good copy. hardcover

1883104806Hamburg: Verlag von Otto Meissner 1883-1885. Rare early printing of one of the most influential books ever published. Octavo original cloth over pebbled leather boards all edges speckled red. In very good condition with ownership stamps tape gutter repairs rebacked. One of the most important works of modern times as well as one of the most influential "Kapital" is an incisive critique of private property and the social relations it generates. Living in exile in England where this work was largely written Marx drew on a wide-ranging knowledge of its society to support his analysis and generate fresh insights. Arguing that capitalism would create an ever-increasing division in wealth and welfare he predicted its abolition and replacement by a system with common ownership of the means of production. "Capital" rapidly acquired readership among the leaders of social democratic parties particularly in Russia and Germany and ultimately throughout the world to become a work described by Marx's friend and collaborator Friedrich Engels as 'the Bible of the Working Class'. All title pages show 1909 Volume III is a first printing while I and II are later printings. Kerr & Company above London Swan Sonnenschein & Co The Charles H. Kerr translation has been the authorized standard edition in English up until modern times. The Kerr translation is by Ernest Untermann who penned other works for Kerr. For this 1909 set Untermann also went back to Volume I and revised that translation as well. ¶¶ Before taking on the job Untermann made it clear that he needed to be paid to devote so much time to such a project. Joseph Dietzgen a German immigrant to the US wrote several works for Kerr. He also encouraged his son Eugene to come to America. Eugene came and built up a very successful business manufacturing drafting and engineering supplies. However he caught tuberculosis and returned to Europe where he continuted to spread his father's socialist views. When told about the Kerr project involving Kerr Untermann and Marx's Capital he offered his assistance and said he would underwrite the whole project. The money also enabled Untermann to start his own chicken farm. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 869; 618; 1048 pp . Charles H. Kerr Company hardcover

Leitir Icelandic National Library retains a number of issues. KVK notes a number of continental holdings chiefly amongst German institutions. Not found in LoC BAC/LAC BL et al. Exceptionally rare to be offered in commerce. Text in Icelandic.

The Icelandic edition was translated by the “affable and loquacious” Einar Olgeirsson teacher politician and a founding member of the island nationÂ’s Communist Party Kommúnistaflokkur Ãslands while still a student at Humboldt University of Berlin then known as Friedrich Wilhelm University in the final year of his stay in 1923. It would be refined and published upon his return to Iceland in 1924 six years before the formal establishment of the party in his home-town of Akureyri and with the assistance of a young radical named Stefan Pjetursson codenamed Jon Helgason by the Comintern an avowed Communist who had previously published a short work on the Bolshevik Revolution in 1921. An exceedingly rare and unique appearance of the first Icelandic-language issue of the enormously influential political treatise popularly and somewhat misleadingly known as the 'Communist Manifesto' or in the words of scholar John Spargo who referred to it as the “Declaration of Independence of the Socialist Party”. Widely considered "by far the most influential single piece of political writing since the French Revolutionary 'Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen' it was penned in Brussels in late 1847 and anonymously published in February 21 1848 in German as 'Manifest der Kommunistischen Parteiby' as commissioned by the London-based 'Bund der Kommunisten' The Communist League and printed by the Kommunistischer Arbeiterbildungsvere Workers' Educational Association out of their London-based office located at 46 Liverpool St. Organized into four sections with a preamble the Manifesto would outline Marx and Engels' theories of the class struggle criticism of capitalist modes of production and in their view its inherent contradictions ultimately calling for its "forcible overthrow". Circulation of the original was limited to a handful of key leaders within the movement but preparations were swiftly made for its translation into all European languages. As Eric Hobsbawm notes in the ‘Introduction to The Communist Manifesto: A Modern EditionÂ’: "Even before the Russian Revolution of 1917 it had been issued in several hundred editions in some thirty languages including three editions in Japanese and one in Chinese. Nevertheless its main region of influence was the central belt of Europe stretching from France in the West to Russia in the East. Not surprisingly the largest number of editions were in the Russian language 70 plus 35 more in the languages of the Tsarist empire - 11 in Polish 7 in Yiddish 6 in Finnish 5 in Ukrainian 4 in Georgian 2 in Armenian. There were 55 editions in German plus for the Habsburg Empire another 9 in Hungarian and 8 in Czech but only 3 in Croat and one each in Slovak and Slovene 34 in English covering the USA also where the first translation appeared in 1871 26 in French and 11 in Italian - the first not until 1889. Its impact in southwestern Europe was small - 6 editions in Spanish including the Latin American ones; one in Portuguese. So was its impact in southeastern Europe 7 editions in Bulgarian 4 in Serb 4 in Romanian and a single edition in Ladino presumably published in Salonica. Northern Europe was moderately well represented with 6 editions in Danish 5 in Swedish and 2 in Norwegian.” Marx K. Engels F. & Hobsbawm E. J. 1998. The Communist manifesto: a modern edition.
