8327New York: Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute. First Edition. Original wraps. Very Good. 5X7 Inches.20 PP. Archive of EIGHT "Shooting's Fun For Everyone" booklets including the original 1957 first issue. While it may seem unfamiliar to us today the America of the 1950's included gun-wielding children in every state. Children were introduced to guns and gun ownership at a very early age. Most schools including those in New York City had pistol and rifle shooting competitions and clubs in the 1950's. Up until 1969 most New York City High Schools had a shooting club; students competed in shooting competitions and the federal government paid for rifles and ammunition. The New York City schools quietly phased out their shooting programs during the 1970s. These early comic-style brochures were marketed for sale to gun retailers as well as manufacturing companies. They were distributed as part of a national decades long campaign to entice children to gun ownership.

The first year production run of this booklet contained no blank box on the rear cover for advertisement. This was altered in coming years and many of these booklets located today are from local government offices and gun retailers as well as manufacturers.

This archive contains:

1957 VG example of this first year booklet
1958 VG / blank back
1958 VG / Winchester & Western Rifle advertisement
1958 VG / Deputy Game Protector - Tamaqua PA
1959 VG / blank back
1962 GOOD / blank back
1966 VG / blank back
1967 VG / blank back. 1938ABE-1680757161243The Macmillan Company New York 1938. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Inscribed on the title page: "For Harriet and John Finucane our friends from Dorothy Noyes Arms John Taylor Arms." An early memoir about fishing from a woman uncommon signed. As the foreword says "Since time immemorial fishing has been considered a purely masculine sport. . . . for the unknown sisterhood of the rod and reel this little book is written." Dorothy and John have each signed separately and the inscription to their friends is in John's hand. Interestingly a previous inscription is present but very faded. John Taylor Arms was a well-known artist. Though he didn't do the illustrations in this volume--those belong to William J. Schaldach--the book is dedicated to him: "To J.T.A. to whose keen love of angling and joyous companionship in the days spent beside lake or brook or river I owe my happy fishing memories." Chapters range from at least Maine to Wyoming from trout to salmon with a lot in-between. Gilt fish on front and gilt lettering on the spine blue cloth. A very good book with stain to lower corner of front board light sunning to spine and toning to pages lacking the dust jacket. // Wood River = Books specializes in ecology natural history nature writing the environment and environmental literature with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.
