Provides ample maps charts and diagrams on the demographics of Israel's labor force at the time of Israel's 2nd census after its creation in 1948. The charts provide data with special sections addressing men women specific occupations the non-Jewish predominantly Arab population 137000 aged 14 and over and the Jewish population subdivided into places of birth Europe and America Africa and Asia and Israel as well as waves of immigration prior to 1947 1947-1954 and after 1955. The data is gathered from a 20% population sample pool. A fascinating study of demographic and economic shifts across all of Israel's rapidly growing settlements within what will eventually be referred to as "the Green Line." Compiled by Arieh Shahar Uzi Paran Arieh Bittan with a preface by Professor R. Bachi the Government Statistician. Details every administrative area of Israel at the time of its 2nd census after its creation in 1948. "Presents a detailed description of two urban geographical-statistical frameworks: geographical-statistical areas within the boundraies of urban settlements and conurbations around the large cities." Along with population data the volume also provides an exhaustive account of public buildings industrial areas commercial and business areas as well as agricultural and special function areas. The census divides Israel into 31 urban settlements with the total population in these administrative areas numbering at 1488622. Of the three major municipalities at the time Jerusalem prior to the annexation of East Jerusalem in 1967 numbers at 166301 residents Haifa at 182007 and Tel Aviv at at 386612. Illustrated with numerous maps 21 of them on foldout plates all 1:20000 scale denoting administrative sectors municipal boundaries paved and unpaved roads some public buildings and topographical landmarks. Taken still shortly after the creation of the country this study does not provide data regarding the "natural geographical regions" of Israel. Overall a fascinating study on the rate of growth and expansion of settlement blocs in Israel showing the inception of what will eventually be heavily populated cities within the "Green Line." The majority of text and charts are given in English and Hebrew English introduction on front Hebrew on back; however many specific details such as buildings street names etc. are given only in Hebrew.
