1855007164Sacramento California 1855. Manuscript. Very Good. No Binding. HOLOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. Two manuscript letters in ink both on ruled paper with folding creases the 1855 letter 8" x 12 1/2" with single spaced writing both sides approx. 500 words. The 1856 letter 15" x 10" folded in half to make 4 pp. approx. 300 words with small blindstamp top left corner depicting an eagle. The earlier letter is headed "September 18th 1855 Naperville Dupage County Illinois" and ends "Michael direct your letters Nevada County Nevada post office California". George writes to his brother Michael in Naperville that he has "seen a good dele sins i rote you they last letter" including a hundred "inshins" and some "Buffellow". He adds that "we had good luck all they way of may we left Council Bluff" and that he is not home sick yet. He then talks of the gold mines river mining what they are paying and the cost of things such as board "from five to ten dollars a week" "Beaf" "wors 15 to 20 cents" and "potato" "4 cent per pound". He adds that he intends to have some gold before he comes home and that "girls are not so plenty here as they are in state". He closes by asking his brother to write him and to remain at home in Illinois to care for their parents. The 1856 letter headed Sacramento august 3th 1856 informs his brother that he is well and "down to Sacramento now" working on a farm feeding a "schrasing" thrashing machine and that "they times is verry hard in California now". He adds that he had some money "stole" while he was in the mountains but since coming down into the valley he was making money and will send some home soon. The letter ends with George wishing to see them all soon and that he is not home sick. The third page of the letter bears a drawing of a wing or leaf eleven smaller versions of the same image interspersed on page 2. A fascinating testimonial on California during the gold rush written in a strong hand and in a wonderful vernacular style by a good observer. unknown

"Doctors had written about the cave before but with Charles W. Wright M.D. of the Kentucky School of Medicinein Louisville a new era of Mammoth Cave medical authors began.Wright was present in Mammoth Cave during the first descent of a deep pit known as the Maelstrom and he was one of the first explorers of Diamond Caverns. His book The Mammoth Cave of Kentucky was published in 1858 and again in 1859. In 1860 he revised and enlarged it. As A Guide Manual to the Mammoth Cave the 1860 edition became the standard reference book about the cave until it was replaced nine years later by Dr. Binkerd's book. Even after Binkerd's book was replaced by Dr. Forwood's book Wright's Guide Manual was still in demand. It was republished in 1870 and again in 1875." An apparently unrecorded original railroad map dated Feb. 1872 showing the city of Vincennes Indiana. 19' h x 37" w on translucent vellum architectural paper scale 1" = 400 feet. Very Good number 920-4 in marker bottom right corner bottom right corner clipped not affecting any details of the map bottom left corner with 2 small holes punched faint creasing and light soiling. Drawn in black with cross marks in red and the tracks of the C & V RR in blue. Details include locations of depots mills foundries and warehouses along the Wabash River Catholic Church cemetery and property street names and location of a seminary. Additionally showing are the lines of the Evansville & Crawfordsville RR Indianapolis & Vincennes RR and the Ohio & Mississippi RR. Founded in 1732 by the French Vincennes county seat of Knox County is the oldest continually inhabited European settlement in Indiana and was the first capitol of the Indiana Territory. Its population in 1870 was 5440. The Cairo & Vincennes Railroad was chartered in Illinois in 1867 by Civil War General Green B. Raum. The railroad began laying track in 1870 and was fully completed in 1874. Established to move coal from the Illinois mines one of its first Presidents was the Civil War General Ambrose Burnside. It was reorganized as the C & V Railway not railroad in 1880 confirming the date this map was drawn. 1917List1730Chicago: Poole Brothers 1917. Folding map measuring 38 ½ x 26 ¾ inches. Tape repairs to verso some tears at folds and edges still bring and attractive good to very good overall with excellent restoration potential. A map of the canneries in Alaska British Columbia and Washington operated by the Deming and Gould Company who were influential in the growth of the Alaskan salmon trade. The map’s date of printing 1917 suggests that perhaps it was related to the war effort as salmon demand increased during this period. The Demings based in Chicago were influential in the growth of the salmon trade in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest founding Pacific American Fisheries Inc. in 1899 and continuing in various iterations until their sale of the firm in 1934 due to president E.B. Deming’s ailing health. The map shows seventeen different canneries several on the Alaska peninsula and the one in Bellingham. We find no record of this imprint only a later and small version held at the University of Washington. Poole Brothers unknown
