Written a few years after Burton's celebrated account of his journey to Mecca and Medina this book describes the explorer's 1860 visit to Salt Lake City. Burton who met Brigham Young on the trip applied his characteristic ethnographic eye to Mormon ways and his work offers a detailed and sympathetic portrait. After the conclusion of the Civil War there was a demand for improved farming methods throughout the southern region. Most of the Agricultural information previously used in the South was based on European research most of which were not adaptable to the southern soil and climate. The University of Georgia established a small experimental reseach farm in1873 run by a Professor of Chemistry at the University E. M. Pendleton. Two years later Professor Pendleton published this book written for the Agricultural students at the Unversity of Georgia one of the very first such textbook published in the United States. Book Condition is Very Good; clean with firm hand tied binding and orignal leather covering on spine with title and author's name in gilt lettering.Some cracking and rubbing to leather. 419pp. Endpapers and pastedowns are agricultral advertisements. Wear to boards especially at heel corners boards become visable with some spots of discoloration. Marbled page edges. Interior is clean and unmarked with a very occasional spot of foxing. Original manuscript autograph document signed by Mehmed Tevfik Biren. 335x20 cm. Folded. 1 p. In Ottoman script. Dated 25 Saban 1338 AH. Letterhead of 'Sûrâ-yi Devlet' addressed to 'Bâb-i Âlî Teshilât Sandigi Komisyonu'. Biren served as a high-ranking statesman such as the Minister and the Governor in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. Also he was last chief of the council of the state i.e. Shûrâ al-Devlet. Mehmet Tevfik Bey was born in 1867 in Istanbul. His father was a high-ranking statesman in the Ministry of Education. After graduating from Mekteb-i Mulkiye in 1885 at the age of 18 he started his first duty as the clerk of Abdulhamid II at Yildiz Palace. From 1897 to 1901 he served as the Governor of Jerusalem. After that he was appointed as the Governor of Thessaloniki. He was the governor of Yemen between 1904-1905. He became the Minister of Finance in the last years of the Ottoman Empire. He participated in the negotiations of the Treaty of Sevres signed in 1920. He was last appointed on 19 August 1921 as the 'Sûrâ re'isi'. He continued this duty until the abolition of the Sultanate on 4 November 1922. Thus he was the last 'al-Shura' of the Ottoman Empire. After the proclamation of the Republic he left the state. Advertising the "BURLINGTON ROUTE shortest and quickest line to Chicago St. Louis Peoria Des Moines and Ohio and especially to all points in Iowa Wisconsin Indiana Illinois Michigan and Ohio." Also advertising "NEW LINE TO DENVER and all points in Colorado. This extension will be completed and ready for business about July 1 1882 and the public can then enjoy the advantages of a through line between Denver and Chicago all under one management." The map was engraved by A. Zeese & Co Map Eng. Chicago and titled "Map of the BURLINGTON & MISSOURI RIVER R.R. IN NEBRASKA And Leased Lines" with a smaller inset map "BURLINGTON ROUTE DENVER TO KANSAS CITY CHICAGO ST. LOUIS". A RARE railroad map OCLC locates only two copies at Yale and SMU. Near Fine two small closed tears at lower margin not affecting text or map. The B. & M. R. R. was incorporated in Iowa in 1852 and began operating across Iowa in 1856 with headquarters in Omaha Nebraska. It was acquired as a subsidiary of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1872.
