With the backing of Tammany Hall, he became the Governor of New York on January 1, 1913. He soon annoyed Tammany's leader 'Boss' Charles F. Murphy by refusing to accept his guidance on appointments and nominations, ordering investigations of corruption in state agencies, and other similar actions. Tammany politicians brought false charges against him for diverting some campaign contributions to his own use and, with a legislative majority, they made the charges stick. He was impeached and removed from office on October 13, 1913. With Reformers like Thomas leading the fight, he was essentially vindicated, being elected to the New York State Assembly less than a month later. Thomas was deeply involved in Reform Politics, and was the Commonwealth Land candidate for Justice of New York Supreme Court 1st District in 1924. AMERICANA BOX 11
Fine German Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In German. 516 p., ills. So fragte Sultan Abdül Hamid II.

67 pages with forty-four illustrations. Circa 1949. Abundantly illustrated with very interesting black and white photographs which document a multitude of protests. "The Tithe Act of 1936 has left an entirely unsatisfactory state of affairs. It leaves the tithe-paying farmers disgruntled and antagonistic, and puts the country in the position of placing a proportion of its most important citizens in this unsatisfactory state of mind for some sixty years. Agriculture is, in fact, made the scapegoat for the Church of England. The Government has satisfied its Church financially without the consent of its farmer tithe-payers. (See London Demonstration). We, therefore, invity your perusal and study of the following pages, and hope that you will find them instructive, provocative and amusing. First leaf loose. Occasional markings to contents. Very rough copy of a most unusual work. Book

The Kizlar Agasi (qizlar aghasi, literally, Agha of the girls), was the chief eunuch off th Ottoman Imperial harem. Although the title may have been applied to the head of the palace harem eunuchs from the empire's early years, the formal office, known as The agha-yi Darüssaade (or, Dar al-Sa'ada), literally "Commander of the Abode Felicity", dates to 996/1588, when Sultan Murad III (r. 1574-1595) transferred the supervision of the Evkâfü'l-Haremeyn (Awkâf al-Haramayn, the imperial pious foundations for the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina) to the head of harem eunuchs from the chief of the eunuchs who guarded the sultan's privy chamber in Topkapi Palace's third court. Until the 14th/19th century, the post was always attached to the supervision of the Evkâfü'l-Haremeyn. Most holders of the office, like most harem eunuchs generally, were Habesî (Habashi, Abyssinian), which in this case was a broad designation encompassing much of the Horn of Africa. (Source: Brill, Encyclopedia of Islam). In the 19th century, agha-yi darussade worked on waqf works.
