First edition of this extremely rare first science fiction book discusses the biological probability of the possibility of life on planets in the Solar System, with semi-fictional texts, in the light of scientific knowledge at the time of publication. Osman Nuri Eralp was a Turkish veterinarian and microbiologist. Eralp was born in Istanbul in the Ottoman Empire. He completed his university education at "Mekteb-i Tibbiye-i Mülkiye" which was the medical school of Darülfünun [i.e. House of Multiple Sciences, name of Istanbul University in Ottoman era]. To continue studying for a post-graduate qualification, he attended Sorbonne and Pasteur Institute. After graduation, he worked as a veterinarian while continuing his research studies. After the declaration of the Constitutional Regime in 1908, he worked as a full-time academic at Istanbul University and Ankara University. He lectured on histology and embryology. Eralp contributed notably to the field of bacteriology via his research on microorganisms (tuberculosis, anthrax, cholera, syphilis, gonorrhea), and the field of virology by his research on rinderpest. He wrote the first science fiction book in Turkey titled "Baska dünyalarda canli mahlûkât var midir" [i.e. Are there alive creatures in other worlds?]. (Wikipedia). Ex-library stamps of Balikesir Halkevi [i.e. Balikesir Public House]. Yüzbasi [i.e. Captain] Harputlu Saraczâde Ishak Hakki Bey was an officer who participated in the War of Independence (1919-1922) on the Balikesir front. He prepared a guide that explained the city in detail during the period he was in and around Balikesir in the 1920s. Balikesir is a city in Turkey and is the capital city of Balikesir Province. It was the capital of Karasi between 1341-1922. Close to modern Balikesir was the Roman town of Hadrianutherae, founded, as its name commemorates, by the emperor Hadrian. Hadrian came to the region in A.D. 124, as a result of a successful bear hunting he had established a city called his name here. It is estimated that the city consisted of the castle, the homestead, the stud, and a few homes. It is thought that the small town was where the current stadium is present. Members of the Roman and Pre-Byzantine dynasty had used this castle as a vacation area and for hunting. During the Byzantine period, the small town which had become increasingly neglected was known as Palaeokastron meaning Old Castle. Also, when the Turkmens came from Middle Asia to Mysia, they called it Balukiser because of the remains of the castle, as Hisar is the Turkish word for castle. In 1345, Balikesir city was annexed by the Ottomans. In 1898 an earthquake destroyed much of the city. The number of buildings that were not destroyed in the 1898 earthquake was only 51.[7] In 1914, Turkish students marched through the streets of the city singing a song of hatred against the Greeks. In April 1916, the Christian refugees of the villages in the vicinity of Balikesser underwent persecution from the Turks. They were refused bread on payment. The women were told that they should become Muslim so as not to die of hunger. At the beginning of June, many young Greeks were forced by the authorities to convert to Islam at Government headquarters. On 30 June 1920, Balikesir city was conquered by the invading Greeks but on 6 September 1922, the Turkish army took back the city. During the Turkish War of Independence, Balikesir was the main center of the militias in Western Anatolia against the Greeks. Balikesir's former name was Karasi because Balikesir city was founded by Karasi Beg in the 13th century as using the remains of the small town. 1297 is considered as the date of establishment of the city which was one of the few to be founded by the Turks in Anatolia. The Karasids was a Turkic principality in Mysia. Since the 13th century, Balikesir city has been the administrative center of the Mysia region. This guide to this city and it's around includes six chapters titled introduction, geographic structure, social structure, economic structure, education, municipality, and foundations. This is the earliest Turkish guide to Balikesir includes interesting and comprehensive information in detail about the topography, geography, and demography of the region. This work, prepared to be taught in engineering schools, is valuable for its plain expression, variety of the first subjects in the period it deals with, and its content enriched with illustrations. This rare book is very important to be the first textbook to cover the following topics: Ratio of forces to velocities and their effects on objects, centripetal force, lever, pulley, inclined plane, weight, the pressure of liquids, the balance of gases, barometer, manometer, theoretical views on some musical instruments, heat dissipation force of objects, heat increase forces, thermometer, etc. Dervish Pasha also included in his book the pioneering experiments that he had done in Muhendishane, which attracted a lot of attention during his time in the Ottoman scientific society. This exceedingly rare booklet (only three institutional paper copies) contains a brief biography of John Davison Rockefeller Sr., (1839-1937), known as an American philanthropist and the richest man in the world of his time. "Büyük Adamlar Serisi" [i.e. The "Big Men" series] consists of about 41 small books. They were all published in the same year (1927) by a delegation under the presidency of Gövsa and some of them were written by him personally. This series was groundbreaking since biography was not a much-explored genre in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. Talât Sait Halman, (1931-2014), was a famous Turkish poet, translator and cultural historian. He was the first Minister of Culture of Turkey. From 1998 onward, he taught at Bilkent University as the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Letters. The sonnets had been translated into Turkish, some of the long and heavily rhymed poems of Shakespeare such as Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, and A Lover's Complaint remained yet to be translated. These remaining verses were translated by Talat Halman and published in 1964, and then in 2014, as a complete edition. This book is published as the publisher's 137th book. Agop Arad, (1913-1990), was a Turco-Armeno painter, graphic designer, cover and book illustrator, and journalist.

Exceedingly rare first edition of this first translation of Stevenson in any Turkish / Turkic language, of 'New Arabian Nights' including the short stories Stevenson's 'The Suicide Club' and 'The Rajah's Diamond'. Translated by Salime Servet Seyfi (1868-1944), who was a female author and translator who wrote books during the period of the Constitutional Monarchy (after 1908) and National Struggle for Independence (1919-1922). Having published two books, poetry and a novel, her place among the women author is notable. She among the rare women authors to contribute to war literature. She mainly wrote didactic prose and poems. Her works attract attention for they inspire readers about national conscience. Salime Servet, who wrote mainly during the years of the Balkan Wars (1911-1912), played an active role in Müdafaa-i Milliye Cemiyeti [i.e. National Resistance Community]. Furthermore, she contributed to the literature with her journal of Seyyale [i.e. Fluid]. She translated Stevenson's short stories shortly after the Balkan Wars (1911-1912). She used a gorgeous but simple language in Ottoman Turkish including Persian and Arabic words carefully selected by her in her translation. "New Arabian Nights" by Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1882, is a collection of short stories previously published in magazines between 1877 and 1880. The Suicide Club is a collection of three 19th century detective fiction short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson that combine to form a single narrative. First published in the London Magazine in 1878, they were collected and republished in the first volume of the New Arabian Nights. The Rajah's Diamond is a cycle of four short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson. First published in 1878 in a serial periodical London Magazine, they were republished in the first volume of New Arabian Nights. The Prisoner of Chillon is a 392-line narrative poem by Lord Byron. Written in 1816, it chronicles the imprisonment of a Genevois monk, François Bonivard, from 1532 to 1536. After almost 100 years later, this poem was translated into the Ottoman Turkish by Abdullah Cevdet firstly printed in Geneva. Abdullah Cevdet, (1869-1932), was a leading Ottoman/Turkish free-thinker, materialist, and Westernizer. He was born in the town of Arapgir in Ma?muret?ül-Azîz Province of the Ottoman Empire and grew up in a pious, lower-middle-class Muslim household, where he received a strict religious education. His father's stubborn refusal of smallpox vaccination left him pockmarked for life and contributed to his eventual gravitation towards scientism. Abdullah Cevdet graduated from the Military Middle School in Ma'muret'ül-Azîz in 1885, and then entered the Kuleli Military Medical Preparatory School in Istanbul. Three years later, he enrolled in the Royal Military Medical Academy. At this time, he was still very religious; one of his early poetry books from this period includes a glowing "Na't-i Serif," a eulogy for the Prophet Mu?ammad. However, like many other cadets, Abdullah Cevdet's views underwent a drastic transformation in the academy, where he became an ardent scientistic thinker and materialist. Here he produced his first translations from major works of German Vulgärmaterialismus, such as Ludwig Büchner's Kraft und Stoff and Aus Natur und Wissenschaft. He continued to translate from European writers up until his death, including Vittorio Alfieri, Émile Boutmy, Lord (or George Gordon) Byron, Jean-Marie Guyau, Baron (or Paul-Henri Dietrich) d'Holbach, Friedrich von Schiller, William Shakespeare, and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire). One of his most important contributions to Ottoman and Turkish intellectual debate was the translation of Gustave Le Bon's writings into Turkish and the introduction of his elitist ideas to the Ottoman elite. Abdullah Cevdet also continued to write poetry throughout his life. Although the poems he wrote in the academy bore strong Parnassian influences, his later work was increasingly Symbolist in nature. Extremely rare first Turkish translation of Macbeth, printed in Ottoman Cairo. Macbeth reflected Abdullah Cevdet's reaction against Hamidian despotism and his love and advocacy of liberty. One must also remember him as one of the founding members of the Party of Union and Progress - a secret organization that conspired to overthrow Abdülhamid's absolutist regime. The argument that Abdullah Cevdet's translation of Hamlet, Julius Caesar and Macbeth reflected his opposition to Abdülhamid II's absolute monarchy could be justified with the fact that the themes of the translated plays were perceived by the political authorities as threatening since they were about the murder of kings and heads of state. In Abdullah Cevdet's view, Macbeth is famous as a drama of "ambition for status" (hirs-i cah). Abdullah Cevdet was an Ottoman-born Turkish intellectual and physician of Kurdish ethnic descent, and one of the founders of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP). In 1908, he joined the Democratic Party that later on merged with the Freedom and Accord Party in 1911. He was also a translator, radical free-thinker, and ideologist of the Young Turks until 1908. The son of a physician, and himself a graduate from the Military College in Constantinople as an ophthalmologist, Cevdet, initially a pious Muslim, was influenced by Western materialistic philosophies and came to oppose institutionalized religion but thought that "although the Muslim God was of no use in the modern era, the Islamic society must preserve Islamic principles." He published the periodical Içtihat from 1904 to 1932, of which articles he used to promote his modernist thoughts. He was arrested and expelled from his country several times due to his political activities and lived in European cities including Vienna, Geneva and Paris. His poetry was linked with the Symbolist movement in France and he received accolades from leading French authors like Gustave Kahn. (Source: DR. "Between 1908 and 1910, Abdullah Cevdet produced a large oeuvre of translations, including four translations of Shakespeare's tragedies: The translations of Hamlet and Julius Caesar (translated by Cevdet as Jül Sezar) were published in 1908, the same year as the declaration of the Second Constitution. Macbeth, translated by Cevdet as Makbes, was published in the following year. [.] Nonetheless, Abdülhamid II seemed to be even less tolerant of the dissemination of Hamlet, Macbeth, and Julius Caesar, since they were all about unjust rulers who were executed in the end. It is not surprising that the performances of these plays became subject to strict censorship in the Ottoman lands and banned (Paker 1986: 91). This could be shown as a reason why Abdullah Cevdet was able to publish the translations of these plays only after 1908, though he had finished translating Hamlet in 1902, Julius Caesar and Macbeth in 1904, and Romeo and Juliet in 1905 (Süssheim 1987). As Abdullah Cevdet was a planner of culture, his literary translations cannot merely be judged on an "aesthetic" level. It will be discussed in this chapter that Abdullah Cevdet's translations of Hamlet, Julius Caesar and Macbeth could be read as critical texts directed against Abdülhamid II's absolutist regime. Extremely rare first Turkish translation of the Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare in book form. The Merchant of Venice (1885) and The Comedy of Errors (1886-87) were the earliest translations into Turkish by Hasan Sirri, which had the chance to be published in book form. Translators in the Ottoman era had to cope with three obstacles: cultural differences, difficulty in language, and censorship. Shakespeare's works were no exception, as Gönül Bakay argues "the early, Ottoman-period translators and producers expunged the negative imagery" (2004: np) of the Turks in his plays. Even The Merchant of Venice was banned because "it was believed that the theme would offend the Empire's (after 1923, the Republic's) Jewish population". The first play fully translated for print was actually the Merchant of Venice, published in 1885 in Turkish (Arabic letters - Ottoman script). There is a good deal of conjecture about the name of the translator: Only two initials appear on the book, H. and I. now claimed to be the first letter of the first name and the last letter of the last name of a Hasan Sirri. The translator of this book Örikagasizâde Hasan Sirri, (1861-1939), was an administrator and educator who grew up during the reign of Abdulhamid II and was in state service for almost forty years. He was the son of Turkish diwan poet Ahmet Nafiz Pasha and the father of author Nahid Sirri Örik. First edition of this extremely rare first-hand and historically significant eyewitness account of the Syrian and the Suez Canal Operations during the Great War by an Ottoman soldier and statesman. Erden describes in this book his return to Istanbul after his military attaché duty in Paris and his departure to Damascus to join the 4th Army in Syria under the command of Cemal Pasha (1872-1922). He then discusses the Arab Revolt in Hejaz and its possible effects on the Ottoman Empire (The Arab Uprising was initiated by Sharif Hussein bin Ali in June 1916 during the Great War with the aim of creating an independent and united Arab state comprising of Aden in Yemen and Aleppo in Syria against the Imperial Ottoman). After disclosing his views and the actions of the army in the region, he goes on to describe Jerusalem, the Suez Canal, and the wars that took place there. Erden gave new information on the reasons and results of the Canal operation, the condition of the Turkish army along Palestine and Syria fronts, the relations among the Turkish staff, and the nature of the Arab revolt through his views and observations in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria fronts accumulated as he was Cemal Pasha's chief of staff. Erden was a Turkish soldier and war historian. After graduating from the Military Academy in 1903, he worked in the units and headquarters in Yemen, as the staff of the 3rd Corps in the Balkan War and as the Paris Military Attaché. The city straddles the Cibin River, a tributary of the river Olt. The first official record referring to the Sibiu area comes from 1191 when Pope Celestine III confirmed the existence of the free prepositure of the German settlers in Transylvania, the prepositure having its headquarters in Sibiu, named Cibinium at that time. In the 14th century, it was already an important trade center. As of the year 1376, the craftsmen were divided into 19 guilds. Sibiu became the most important ethnic German city among the seven cities that gave Transylvania its German name Siebenbürgen (literally "Seven Citadels"). It was home to the Universitas Saxorum (Community of the Saxons), a network of pedagogues, ministers, intellectuals, city officials, and councilmen of the German community forging an ordered legal corpus and political system in Transylvania since the 1400s. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city became the second -and then the first most important center of Transylvanian Romanian ethnics. The first Romanian-owned bank had its headquarters here (The Albina Bank), as did the ASTRA (Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Romanian's People Culture). After the Romanian Orthodox Church was granted status in the Habsburg Empire from the 1860s onwards, Sibiu became the Metropolitan seat, and the city is still regarded as the third-most important center of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Between the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and 1867 (the year of the Ausgleich), Sibiu was the meeting-place of the Transylvanian Diet, which had taken its most representative form after the Empire agreed to extend voting rights in the region (Source: Wikipedia). Rare second edition of this "memorandum" translated into Ottoman Turkish by Mahmud Sevket Pasha, is one of the works of Baron von der Goltz (Pasha) who was invited by Sultan Abdulhamid II upon the request of Germany to modernize the Ottoman army after the defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). In the first years of modernization in the Ottoman army, the army was attempted to be compared to Napoleon's army, and its regulations were translated and organized accordingly. Many regulations, memoranda, and "layihas" were translated from French. However, when the Germans defeated the French in 1871, the German military system was regarded as superior, and from 1882 onwards, German advisers began to be recruited for the improvement of the army. Since the arrival of Major Goltz in 1883, German training guides and some German instructions were translated into Turkish for use in military schools. One of the most important instructions translated into Turkish was this book includes the basic military issues with many military plans. Goltz Pasha was a Prussian Field Marshal and military writer who had been in service of the Ottoman Empire two times soon after the Russo-Turkish War in 1877-78 and during the WW1 (1915-16) to reorganize the Ottoman Army. Muharebât-i kila'. Translated by Farukî Sâmi [Pasha], (1861-1911). Wilhelm Leopold Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz, also known as Goltz Pasha, was a Prussian Field Marshal and military writer. After defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), Sultan Hamid, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, asked for German aid in reorganizing the Ottoman Army, so that they would be able to resist the advance of the Russian Empire. Baron von der Goltz was sent. He spent twelve years on this work which provided the material for several of his books. During his time in the Ottoman Empire, Goltz had very negative view of Abdul Hamid II, writing: "The Stambul Efendi, whose father held a well-paid sinecure, reward by Sultan Hamid for his faithfulness, and who enjoyed to the fullest the good life, now knowing the struggle for existence, could not be a great leader on the battlefield. As long as Sultan Abdulhamid and the present ruling classes remain at the rudder, one may not speak of the rescue of Turkey.". Goltz achieved some reforms such as lengthening the period of study at military schools and adding new curricula for staff courses at the War College. From 1883 to 1895, Goltz trained the so-called "Goltz generation" of Ottoman officers, many of whom would go to play prominent roles in Ottoman military and political life. Goltz, who learned to speak fluent Turkish, was a much admired teacher, regarded as a "father figure" by the cadets, who saw him as "an inspiration.". Attending his lectures, in which he sought to indoctrinate his students with his "nation in arms" philosophy, was seen as "a matter of pride and joy" by his pupils. As a result, it was the Ottoman army rather the German army which first embraced Goltz's "nation in arms" theory as the basis of its understanding of war. After some years he was given the title Pasha (a signal honor for a non-Muslim) and in 1895, just before he returned to Germany, he was named Mushir (field-marshal). His improvements to the Ottoman army were significant. It is noteworthy that in the Greco-Turkish War (1897), the Turkish army stopped just before Thermopylae, only when the Czar Nicholas II of Russia threatened the Ottoman Sultan that he would be attacking the Ottoman Empire from eastern Anatolia unless the Ottoman Army stopped their campaign at that point. On his return to Germany in 1895 Goltz became a lieutenant-general and commander of the 5th Division, and in 1898, head of the Engineer and Pioneer Corps and Inspector-General of Fortifications. In 1900 he was made General of Infantry and in 1902 commander of the I. Army Corps. After returning to Germany in 1895, Goltz was in close contact with his students, and offered them his advice. [.] Soon afterward Goltz gave up that position and became a military aide to the essentially powerless Sultan Mehmed V. Baron von der Goltz did not get along with the head of the German mission to Turkey, [.] Sami Pasha al-Faruqi, (1861-1911), was an Ottoman / Turkish soldier, bureaucrat and governor. The Ottoman governor who played an important role in suppressing the Karak Uprising, which was an uprising against Ottoman authority in the Transjordanian town of Al-Karak, which erupted on 4 December 1910. The revolt came after Sami Pasha, the governor of Damascus, wanted to apply the same measures of conscription, taxation, and disarmament to the inhabitants of Al-Karak that previously provoked the Hauran Druze Rebellion. "The varieties of female dress in most of the eastern nations can never be distinguished when they are in the streets, both form their veils and the long cloaks in which they are concealed. At Cairo they conceal the head and part of the body by a large black veil; and those who can afford rich habits, are always covered with a large wrapper. The veil, which is always the first concern with the women, for it is the very last part of their dress they would part with, is formed of a long triangular piece of linen cloth fitted to the head, and falling down before, so as to cover all the face except the eyes. Most of these islands were formerly the cause of frequent wars, and were sometimes subject to one power, sometimes to another, and many of them were often also independent of all. First and only edition of this richly illustrated scarce and uncommon book was printed for the German Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife Augusta Victoria, the commemoration of the construction of Alman Çesmesi [i.e. German Fountain] in Constantinople, and the first anniversary of the Wilhelm II's travel to the Ottoman Empire in 1898. The fountain's design was drawn by the architect Spitta and constructed by the architect Schoele with the German architect Carlitzik and Italian architect Joseph Anthony, working on the project. The fountain was built in Germany and then transported piece by piece to Istanbul, reassembled in its current site, and officially opened on January 27, 1901, on the birthday of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Wilhelm II's voyage to the Levant in 1898 was a state visit that the German Emperor undertook in the Ottoman Empire between 25 October and 12 November 1898. The Kaiser started his journey to the Ottoman Eyalets with Istanbul on 16 October 1898; then he went by yacht to Haifa on 25 October. After visiting Jerusalem and Bethlehem, the Kaiser went back to Jaffa to embark on Beirut, where he took the train passing Aley and Zahlé to reach Damascus on 7 November. This book is richly illustrated including many views of the cities of this voyage's destinations like Jerusalem, Damascus, Beirut (Beirut), Jafa, Baalbek, etc. On 10 November, Wilhelm went to visit Baalbek before heading to Beirut to board his ship back home on 12 November. His visit spurred interest in the German Templer colonies in Palestine. One of the Kaiser's traveling companions, Colonel Joseph von Ellrichshausen, initiated the formation of a society for the advancement of the German settlements in Palestine, named the Gesellschaft Zur Förderung der Deutschen Ansiedlungen in Palästina, in Stuttgart. It enabled the settlers to acquire land for new settlements by offering them low-interest loans. A subsequent second wave of German settlers founded Wilhelma (named after the Kaiser, now called Bnei Atarot) in 1902 near Lod, Walhalla (1903) near the original Jaffa colony, followed by Bethlehem of Galilee (1906). The German Settlement Society successfully encouraged some of the Templars to return to the official, national Protestant Church. The non-Templar colony of Waldheim (now Alonei Abba) was subsequently founded next to Bethlehem of Galilee in 1907 by proselytized Templers now affiliated with the Old-Prussian State Church. The visit resulted in the highest-profile political event in the life of Theodor Herzl, considered the founder of Zionism. Through the efforts of William Hechler, via Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden, Herzl publicly met Wilhelm II three times during the voyage, once in Istanbul (on 15 October 1898) and twice in Palestine (29 October and 2 November).
