Of the various monopolies exercised by the Ottoman ruling stratum in their long domination over South-eastern Europe, the most lasting in its effects was their monopoly over information. The scanty knowledge that outsiders had of this area improved only in the nineteenth century as, one after another, the Balkan nations regained independence and, with it, their identities. Well into the twentieth century, historians made do with very incomplete information about the period prior to the national revivals of the last century. The result was a tendency to offer disturbingly impoverished and flattened views of provincial life under Ottoman rule, inviting doctrinaire distortions of these eclipsed centuries. In this book, originally published in 1982, Bruce McGowan presents material concerning this neglected area. His painstaking study of Ottoman records provides convincing analyses of economic, fiscal and demographic questions fundamental to our understanding of the region.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In English. 94 p. Political parties, which are indispensable elements of democracy, normally declare in detail to the public the economic policies that they will implement through their party programmes. By looking at these programmes, electorates are informed of the economic and social policies proposed by parties and use their democratic preferences, so long as party programmes are not perceived as establishment formalities. In this study, economic policies that political parties entering the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) want to implement as their party programmes are examined during the tumultuous transition to multi-party democracy in Turkey. In general, political parties were influenced to a large extent by economic policies that were dominant in the time of the liberal period (1950-1960), the import substitution period (1960-1980), and the period of transition to a free market economy (1983-2007).

Very Good German Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In German. 20 p., iv numerous b/w plates (Tafeln). Ein Weiteres Sultansbild von Gentile Bellini aus russischem Besitz. A study on Gentile Bellini, (1430-1507), was an Italian painter of the school of Venice. He came from Venice's leading family of painters, and at least in the early part of his career was more highly regarded than his younger brother Giovanni Bellini, the reverse of the case today. From 1474 he was the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice, and as well as his portraits he painted a number of very large subjects with multitudes of figures, especially for the Scuole Grandi of Venice, wealthy confraternities that were very important in Venetian patrician social life. In 1479 he was sent to Constantinople by the Venetian government when the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II requested an artist; he returned the next year. Thereafter a number of his subjects were set in the East, and he is one of the founders of the Orientalist tradition in Western painting. His portrait of the Sultan was also copied in paintings and prints and became known all over Europe.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 522 p. Elemterefis: Superstitious beliefs and occult in the Ottoman Empire, (1839-1923). This book is about the social history of superstitious beliefs and especially magic and sorcery. I mainly tried to examine how superstitious beliefs and magic transformed the daily life of the Ottoman Empire into a world of superstitions in the nineteenth century. However, I had to go further back when I deepened my research into the origin of superstitious beliefs and magic seen in almost every period of the Ottoman Empire. I looked at polytheistic religions like shamanism, Animism, Manichaenism, Buddhism and Hinduism, which were the common religious beliefs of the former Turkish world. I included various other pagan religions and cultures underlying the past of the Ottoman geography over three continents as well as Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, the Sky God belief in Central Asia and finally Islam. In the Ottoman Empire, ¿professional¿ magicians were of the ulema class who were not reluctant to utilize religious knowledge for their personal interests. In fact, they began to live immorally; ¿amateur¿ magicians were composed of occult groups, a.k.a. pseudo-clergy. I followed magic and magicians included in the documents of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives only as they were caught as a result of a complaint. Füsun and Efsun, daughters of Cinci Arif Hoca, and their story add local and authentic flavor to the points made in the book.
Fine English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 282 p. "Professor Karpat, one of the most prominent names in the field of Political History, explores the social structure of Ottoman Empire through different eras and looks at Turkey's multi-party democracy culture from a historical perspective. His articles interpret the Ottoman history for broader audience and lay a vivid picture of events of recent history in front of our eyes. Professor Karpat's remarkable articles take us back to 18th century Ottoman days and examine change and modernization on those days, his work also looks into the independence and interaction of various social groups within a muslim state. The Ottoman social structure produced a unique way of practicing "secularism" where spiritual issues regarding faith and administrative issues regarding everyday state politics were kept completely independent from each other; one was dealing with earthly matters of day to day life of subjects of the Ottoman sultan, the other was to aid the followers of specific faith in their practice of religion and to prepare for after-life. Ottomans, despite having a highly complex social structure accommodating a number of ethnic groups and various religious orders, had successfully sustained freedom of faith by adopting the 'millet' system. Every non-muslim community represented by its leader was regarded as a 'millet' and enjoyed an absolute autonomy and freedom within its own faith and community in terms of practice of religion, language, social relations. During the Tanzimat era a new generation of religious leaders; who were relatively free from state regulations emerged among Ulema and unlike their predecessors they were not dignitaries. The social status of this newly emerging group from within well- established Ulema which was preoccupied at times to legitimise social and political change from an Islamic perspective or at other times tried to maintain status-quo siding with government, overlapped with the social image of the Ottoman middle-class. The fact that the new generation Ulema had common characteristics with ordinary middle-class people had a profound impact on Ottoman-Turkish political history. Consequently, the road map of 'modernity and secularism' set in Republican Turkey was identified by both the state represented by military and civilian bureaucrats and by people represented by local notables.".
